Do most slim girls watch what they eat?

I've been trying tot lose a small amount of weight and it's coming off 1 lb a week, maybe less.

I don't know any slim girls who don't make an effort at staying slim, so since I've been watching what I've been eating I've been looking at what other (slim) girls are eating. To be honest it scares me. Most of them skip breakfast, have a scone or half a bagel at about 10 am, soup/salad for lunch. I presume they have proper dinners. Does anybody think that is healthy? It seems like a lot of adults have soup or a salad for lunch.

It seems totally joyless and unnatural to eat so little to me and yet I'm the one with almost 30% body fat! (Luckily I'm petite so still size 8) Is it possible to be slim and not obsessed with what you eat? And have a normal attitude towards food? Is it healthy to be a little bit pudgy? I know I'd feel awful if I ate like those girls.

I have salad most days for lunch, fish and vegetables most of the time, I wouldnt have a bagel except for a treat once in while, I would eat poridge for breakfast. I dont really see why that is unhealthy? I am not obsessed with what I eat just would prefer not to be overweight.

that sounds spot on to me. esp the porridge for breakfast. cant go wrong with fish (real fish, no breadcrumbs etc) and green salads.

They definitley watch what the eat. Personally as an Irish male, women that are fuller looking are definitley more attractive. And in any case food should be enjoyed.

How is that watching what you eat/bad? A lot of people skip breakfast because they don't have the time. Scones are grand. Soup and salad can be very filling/full of calories...am I missing something here?

I think its very important for people to learn and understand the differences in the types of foods that are out there.
    Grains,carbs,proteins,fats etc
When you learn what your body needs it all becomes a little easier and doesnt feel like punishment at all.
It just takes a while for your body to get used to eating healthy again.

I know some ladies who are really thin but because they have terrible diets they are always sick or stressed out to bits. They still refuse to listen when i tell them to cut down the carbs and up the protein a bit and continue to starve themselves to try to lose that last bit of weight.

Correct me if im wrong somebody, but my understanding is if your body is used to burning calories at a fast rate you can then eat more calories more often.
However if you starve the body if goes into emergency mode and slows down the metabolism so it doesnt lose energy and therefore begins to store fat to protect itself.
Which appears to be a viscious circle.
The girls who eat alot and stay thin probably are very active and have a very fast metabolism due to eating alot of small meals regularly.
At least that appears to be how i stay so thin,i run pretty hot nearly all the time,i eat alot and afterwards my temperature goes up for ages which i presume is my body metabolising the food fast as f!ck lol.

Then again i have a condition that protects me from high or low insulin as all sugar grows as yeast in my body and doesnt effect insulin half as much.Have a book i havent read here from the library called the insulin factor.
Seems insulin and sugar might be connected with losing and gaining weight with some people..maybe all, havent read it yet so dont know :)

Anyway to the original poster, i think you should do some online research and try to slowly integrate a healthy diet into your life aswell as a 30 min walk every day :)
Ussually the big challenge with any diet is cutting down the carbs and sugar which is in nearly every packaged meal and drink.
I saw a tin of peas with sugar in it for gods sake lol, how ridiculous is that, you cant buy tinned peas without sugar!
If you keep regular exercise and eat regular BUT the right foods the weight will not be an issue after a while and you might find your body sitting comfortably at just nicely toned or normal as appose to gaunt and thin with a touch of anemia that seems to go hand in hand with special k/meusli diets.
Really its about what you eat not how much.

Okay, I suppose there are a lot of different statements made in the above post. First off, I suppose there are two types of 'slim' girls; those with a high bodyfat percentage(skinny-fat girls) and those with low bodyfat percentage, within this group some are healthy, others are not.

With regards to 'making an effort at staying slim', I definitely do this, not all the time but about 85% of the time. I take the time to prepare salads for lunch, give myself plenty of time to make scrambled eggs or an omlette for breakfast..do I put in an effort to stay slim, yes. Is it unhealthy, not at all..I put in the effort because I actually love food. I love trying out new dishes and I really enjoy eating. I just don't enjoy eating poor quality food-although chocolate is exempt from this..my biggest vice:D

With regards to the second bolded text, Yes, I look at what I eat but the reason being I train 5/6 times a week and if I wasn't eating well my training would suffer. I eat healthy meals..but a lot of them.

What is a 'normal' attitude to food? This is going to vary completely, as most people weren't thought anything about nutrition in schools. I think I have an educated attitude to food..I know what I eat and why.

End note: It is well known from my fitness log that I eat a lot of chocolate and ice-cream but I'm trying to cut down...impossible task:D

Man I'm the opposite, I'm surrounded by skinny little waifs who seem to eat whatever junk they like 24/7!

I'm the same, skinny girls I know are like 'OMG, my thighs are huge!(they're not), now watch me eat this massive baguette filled to the brim'.

Most of those girls will not eat anything else for the rest of the day though.

Just wait til they hit 30, then they'll be like the rest of us who actually have to work at it :)

I am slim enough size 8 for the most part but I am always conscious of what I eat. I eat porridge for breakfast a sandwich for lunch and a nice big dinner and exercise a few times a week. i still have lots of treats but try to make sensible treat choices! would love to be able to eat what i want and get away with it but i cant and i'd rather be slim than eat bad food all the time

What I find personally with people around me who seem to be "naturally" thin seem to eat atrociously when they do eat but never snack or work their way through the fridge while watching tv in the evenings.

Yeah, I find that people who are naturally thin may eat like ****e but they eat within they're maintenance calories.

They may skip brekkie or grab a banana out the door, then for lunch might get a rib or chicken fillet roll or whatever and the have a little dinner in the evening or a small snack.

I do think there is a skinny body type though, my boyfriend is one and he eats like a pig (4 big meals a day, + snacks, with lots of fat and carbs ad a fair bit of junk food) and still can't put weight on so I don't see why there would't be skinny girls out there the same.

I know only too well there are those types for definite, when i was a teenager my bff was a size 8, coca cola guzzling, pizza at 11pm eating, clear skinned wagon!

I personally don't like eating a huge amount of food in the middle of the day - I'll generally have a salad or a sandwich, occasionally soup but equally occasionally will go for something more substantial (but then will only have a light dinner, maybe an omelette). Otherwise I have my dinner in the evening. There is certainly nothing joyless or unnatural about my diet, I do love food and eating out.

The OP doesn't mention what they think is a normal lunch so it's hard to know what they are comparing the soup/salad to. I certainly believe having two full dinners every day (at lunch and at dinner) is a lot more unnatural than a light lunch and normal dinner.

I suppose it also depends on how much calories your going to burn that day.
I could and have eaten three dinners a day and still find it hard to put on weight.
I guess its the type of foods too that count.Once again as im always hearing here.
    Calories in and calories out.

Oh certainly, I have an office job that tends to run into the evening so on an average day would only have the walk to work, and maybe the walk home, to burn off what I eat. Burning more certainly you can eat larger quantities, so if these girls are running 4 miles to work and having a salad for lunch it is probably not enough. I just assumed a more sedentary lifestyle :o

It can be hard to make a determination about what you think someone is eating unless your with them 24/7.

Doesn't sound very healthy but everyone is very different and some people will be naturally thin regardless of what they eat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,831 ✭✭✭Torakx

I wonder though what is the common factor with those who are naturally slim.

Metabolism shmerabolism. Thin people do not eat enough to put on weight.

Of course metabolism increases somewhat with intake, and decreases in a deficit. I'm trying to put on weight now and without sweets it is very difficult, I can barely make it to 2700kcals a day. That used to be my maintenance normally, and now I find it increased to ~3k. My NEAT is probably increasing a lot, whereas before I was always cold, now I can have only a Tshirt on me at 15 degrees and feeling fine.

I must have been gorging myself on 4k+ a day for months on end to get to 103 kg, mostly doughnuts, choc peanuts, coke. It's difficult, but it can be done :pac:
