Anyone any idea as to when I'll go up to silver? Have about a 50% win/loss rate versus silver players, and I'm beating pretty much all bronze players bar the odd bit of cheese. You can see my stats below.

i think what happens is you should start finding you are playing silver players, and if you beat enough of them you jump into silver. Not got their yet myself, that is just what I heard. It does seem to take a while though.

So I just played a 'bronze' player who told me mid-game that he was actually a platinum rank playing on a friend's account. Suffice to say I got my ass handed to me - what do I do? It seems extremely unfair.

    Replay attached.

    We should 1v1 sometime. ;)

I think the promotion time is completly random from what I have seen and heard from other players. You might go on a 20 game loosing streak next week and then win 1 game and get promoted, just keep playing and you will get better and will get promoted! There seems to be alot of people stuck in bronze that definitly dont belong there

So I upgraded my graphics driver, and I have these irratating black borders on either side of the screen, even though I have 'fullscreen' selected in options - how do I solve?

    Google it

No really, there's always tonnes of people with similar problem :)

Sounds like resolution. Do you have a widescreen moniter?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,460 ✭✭✭Orizio

It was fullscreen before I upgraded the graphics driver so I assume so...?

I'll mess around with the resolution a little and see what happens.

is it to do with the monitor, you know the control on the ahrdware monitor front panel for adjusting the screen maybe?

Your aspect ratio is off. Just change your resolution till it fills the whole screen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,460 ✭✭✭Orizio

How does one do that Grimebox?

As an aside, just beat another silver who all-ined me with his drones, proceeded to lift off and was back mining while he was wondering where I had gone. :D

Pfft, Terran have it so easy.

(I figure if I can't get my play to pro zerg standard, I can at least get my attitude there.)

Just be happy you don't have a defective computer/graphics card/game install, the ****ing thing crashed on me when I was winning again.

Regardless, beat three silvers in a row.

    Menu>Options>Graphics

Resolution is there at the top left. I have to use 1280x800 or else i get borders along the left and right hand side. Does anyone know another solution to this? I would like to lower my resolution to get a better frame rate

Yeah, go to nvidia contraol panel.

Whenever i change from 1280x800 in the nvidia cp i get borders along the top/ bottom or along the sides. I would assume its a problem with the size of my monitor but I never had this problem before I installed win7 which suggests otherwise

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,460 ✭✭✭Orizio

Yeah I don't know, the way I got rid of the borders was through nvidia control panel, but then again my computer crashed a few games into getting rid of the borders so may be it was a mistake on my part.

(as an aside, how OP is a three rax all in against toss?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,327 ✭✭✭NeoSlicerZ

Not really that OP, most decent openers deal with 3 rax good while expoing. Now if you're pulling every scv, it's still not too bad if P pulls expo probes and uses FF well. There's better all ins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,460 ✭✭✭Orizio

Well I'm talking about bronze level tbf. ;)

So mid-late game TvP, when your opponent has an stalker/immortal/collusus army with a few sentries, what would be the ideal Terran army to counter? Rauder/viking/medivac? Are tanks bad versus protoss?

Any chance you could have a look at the below replay and give me your opinion from a toss perspective?

Keep in mind I am still bronze, and thus rubbish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,460 ✭✭✭Orizio

If anyone else would like to have a look at the replay and tell me why I suck please do. Micro in particular is something I don't get.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,997 ✭✭✭Grimebox

Right I don't play as terran but I'll give my 2c as I'm watching. I'm only plat protoss player btw

Bunker at your wall in seems completely pointless. Your wall does the exact same thing as the bunker, if not better.

Only two scv's in one of your main gas! Easily overlooked i guess... but just dont do it!

Those two scv's mining gas are off at 10 mins i just noticed... um why?

Okay 3 scv's on all refinerys. This seems to be a running problem.

Transition from barracks only units quicker. At 18 min you have two factories that havent built anything. Your army composition is going to owned by his higher tech units. Medivacs do wonders with marine/maraud. You could have possibly won that first skirmish with 4 medivacs thrown in... maybe thats a bit of a stretch though.

You need to stim quicker in battles.

No point in expanding to that other main. Better off expanding to the natural of that main or another one thats closer. Transfer your workers. It only takes 5 seconds.

When you see he going for 3+ colos... dont keep massing marines! Colos eat marines up. Go for a more maraud heavy army, which you need more gas for, I refer you to my previous point :p

Its overkill using the medivac to send scv's across. Just send them over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,460 ✭✭✭Orizio

Thanks grimebox. Lack of scvs on gas usually isn't a problem, I'm guessing I took them off to mine more minerals because I was getting mainly marines and didn't want to have too much gas and too little mins. Could have been an oversight though. Does that bunker add no further protection against an early rush along with the wall-in...? The unused factories are just because I am so fecking slow doing other things. ;)

Yeah about the col against the marines. Badly needed more marauders, I'm just used to massing marines because they are so good. I never build marauders against terran or zerg. So would marauder/vikings/medivacs be best or what against that compisition? How good would tanks and thors be against that protoss army?

I was worried about my SCVs getting ambushed, or him seeing them running across and my exp getting attacked. Hence the medivacs. Paranoia on my part.

Paranoia is a big crippler to games.. scared of what lurks in the darkness

Playing with the other races and watching the timer makes you less scared.

Around 7 or 8 mins in I take precautions to watch for
    a) drops/nydus worms/etc - you can see any of these just by easy scouting
    b) invisible stuff, such as a DT, you can keep scans or invest in a turret or two

Other than that sneaky stuff, then its mainly just a macro race between you and him

Which is constantly building scvs, building supply depots, spending your income constantly on units, buildings and upgrades

With terran, by default, aim for marine, medic, marauder, look up a build order, stick roughly to it

When you get comfortable you can experiment more with tanks, ravens; banshees, viking play etc etc.. but so far MMM is still one of the most powerful

3 rax with bunkers behind... and a factory.

Ok, so lets say you wall off normal (1 rax and two depots) and expect a baneling bust - how best to immediately react?

Throw up two bunkers, one behind each of the supply depots, usually does the trick for me.

if its late game banelings, fortress can stop them nicely

Don't use supply depots to start off with... there's a reason P and Ts don't really use depots/pylons in wall off anymore. I would put rax behind the depots then bunkers because if you lose the bunkers you lose the units inside.

lol nobody see what RM did there? :3

congratz Oriz, told ya you will get promoted soon :D remember you cant let the zerg play his game, go drop or make an attack between 5-10mins.

    OT:
dont wall in TvT or TvP, cause you dont have to worry lings run by and if they get siege you give him free buildings to shoot at. plus, you will be vulnerable to early aggressive/all-in play(4marines come at 4:30 and kill your depot and you are supply blocked, less marines than him = gg).

Fair enough. Should I put up a bunker to defend instead? I won't survive a zealot rush or MM rush otherwise...?

Have some questions to ask, as I got a bit of a doing against protoss and zerg today.

    (1) What is the best way to put really early pressure on Zerg? The best I can do is push with three/four sieged tanks, 15-20 marines and a medivac/banshee as soon as possible and expanding at the same time. Zerglings/banelings/mutas seem to kill this pretty well though. What is a good Terran compisition against that build? Roach/hydra seems much easier to deal with.

    (2) What do I do if I'm pinned in my base by mutas? Should I just throw up half a dozen turrets, move out and hope for the best? Otherwise if I begin to split up my marines my siege tanks will get sniped. Shoud I just forget about tanks and go marine/thor/viking? If I scout and see him go mainly banelings/zerglings does that make mutas more likely?

    (3) Regarding protoss, what is the best terran composition against a mainly stalker/collosus build? I came up against that build plus a ****load of phoenixes which seemed unstoppable.

bunker up immediately if you scout that a relatively early attack coming, best thing to do is send a scv to his base to see if he is massing units(say if you see >5marines at 4mins), or he is 4gating (he chrono his cybercore). while how many bunker you need (maximum should be 2) and scv you need to pull to repair is depends on the situation.

zealot rush is auto lose, just pull scv to repair. mass repair+1marine >5zealots :pac:

is all about macro, timing and micro. the earliest mutas he can have is like ~5mutas at 7-8mins, and generally have like ~12 at 11mins, so choose your timing to attack. if he goes baneling early, he wont have that many mutas out etc and you adjust your unit compo to counter that. how to efficiently stim marines and lure bling into marauder etc. dont siege and unsiege all your tanks at the same, move forward by leap frogging your tanks. that said, if you attack at later than 13-15mins, you really should be expecting he has all kind of **** to throw at you! always scan and see what he has, if you cant kill his army, dont attack. macro up more.

i'd say the trouble you are having now is that you are probably outmacro by the zerg so you feel like his muta/ling/bling roll you easily :pac: try to improve your macro and get a better timing with your army, watch replay that you lost and look for the timing that if you have moved out your army earlier he would actually have nothing to defend/hard to defend.

3 turrets around your CC(turret timing you see the muta timing i said above, 1 turret own 4/5 mutas easily, turret placement is important) and keep making marines. stim marines own mutas hardcore. 5 marines can kill a group of 5/6 mutas. if you let him mass mutas get thor but remember to make marines escort thors.

i beter let the toss players talk about this :pac: all i know is marauder rape stalkers so hard. so so so hard. and vikings range make colosus cry. plus some tanks i believe you can take the colo+stalkers ball. but if you let him make a big ball of death, i am afraid there is no answer for T/Z to counter that atm. ghost emp should defo helps, just saying. mass phoenix = low ground units, again is decided by your timing, you can just go rape his base when he is massing phoenixes. the game you said is probably the toss make phoenixes to eat up your vikings' firepower to protect his colosus. just get a good amount of vikings and focus your vikings kill the colosus asap. phoenix sucks in pvt.

Thanks Sera, a couple of more quick questions if you don't mind sensei... :p

    (a) Is there a rought time in which I should get up a bunker? I usually start building it when I have three marines and a fourth in production, then put down a reactor.

    (b) if I put down that many turrets, and lets say I have an exp, thats 6 turrets, he'll start sniping my production facilities, depots etc a few more turrets - surely this will kill my army when I want to attack?

:P just saying what i know bro, the metagame is keep changing in a very fast pace. and fyi, we EU server is defo harder to play in, i know someone who is stuck in gold here but he gets to diamond in NA in 1 week lol

a)i'd say it is depends on the map. always put the scv at the xelnaga tower, u saw him move out with marines, immediately bunker up (thats why you always see those pros's bunker is up just in time when the oppo arrives). bunker up too early hurts your econ (since it is in early game), you can get 2 more marines with that minerals.

b)as i said about the muta timing(normally maximal 5mutas will arrive your base before 8-9mins), you wont need more than 1 turret at each mineral lines before 8mins. you just run your small group of marines to them immediately when his 5/6mutas arrive and you ll be fine. while about 10mins time(best if you have expo up), your mineral will be floating around anyway, so start to throw down a total of 6 turrets is defo a good investment. trust me they wont even try to damage your buildings unless he has about 20mutas(which you should start getting thors when you see his mutas stack that much). and since you should nonstop making marines from reactor-rax anyway, you should always have enough marines to deal with them.

get some replays from qxc, drewbie etc see how they turret up and deal with mutas harass, just look at how they play the simcity and you ll be fine.

Yeah I think I'm going to start walling-off against toss again, any time they see me without a wall-in they either cannon rush me or four gate rush me. I haven't the patience nor the micro to invite cheese game after game. Its fine against terran but not against those other cheesy mother****ers.

I seem to pretty much never get voidrays in TvP these days though.
