The Eleventh Hour on RTE2 - Keelin Shanley and Daire O'Brien

A twitter page has appeared with a few more details on the new RTE 'Tonight with Vincent Browne' clone, The Eleventh Hour
A new current affairs show presented by Keelin Shanley & Daire O'Brien, every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 11pm on RTE Two, from now until election day.
    http://twitter.com/#!/RTEeleventhhour

So it's a blatant spoiler (which recycles the names of a 2010 RTE music show, and a 2006 RTE Radio 1 show.)

Think this programme was created specifically to take a pop at Browne.

With Frontline, Week in Politics, Prime Time and obviously a bit of the Late Late Show, why are Montrose inflicting another current affairs programme on us?

Hope O'Brien and Shanley manage at least not to come with the pro FF baggage of others, but this may prove to be futile.

Is it a rotating presenter each night or each week?

It might be just me but all of the media are giving too much time to FF's new leader :(

I assume it takes over from News on Two so in essence (just like TV3) they are replacing the news with a current affairs show

Keelin Shanley is good, Daire O'Brien on the other hand is very dead pan, but on the ad he sounds like Matt Cooper.

Not that Vincent Browne isn't a clone of his old radio show.

The TV listings seem to think Dave Fanning is back.

TV3 want new "Mad Men"? RTE outbids them and stick it on at midnight...with the aid of the draconian licence fee.

TV3 surge ahead in the ratings at 11pm? RTE start another pointless current affairs programme...with the aid of the draconian licence fee.

Give it up RTE. You're embarrassing yourselves now! Petty point-scoring sh*te!!

TV3 didn't even look to buy Mad Men . But then Sky have moved to out bid everyone to buy that show. Also the show seems to just be for the duration of the GE.

As long as they don't start an Xpose Like show

    Looks like they rotate
keelinshanley is up first, then Daire O'Brien
Presumably the other presenter watches Vincent Browne on their night off, to find some content they can rip off.

They will be disappointed that they will have to watch VB on Friday Night for the Duration of the GE.

While I am for RTÉ and TV3 being competitive I don't think being competitive with like with like shows should really be what they should go after it rarely if every works. TV3's Six News and their Dunphy Show. RTÉ should have got in the Savage Eye, Apres Match etc to do a mock newscast for the duration as they had done with Xit Poll with Colin Murphy. VB is too well established for a significant contender no matter how good or bad the show is. I suppose we will at least be able to watch each show during the ad breaks.

"Playing catch-up" would be a more appropriate name.

    Thank you.
The small audience is another factor. Even in the US, a spokeswoman noted, the show attracted average audiences of about one-15th of that enjoyed by the likes of CSI, The Mentalist, Desperate Housewives or Grey’s Anatomy. She also said there had been no competition from any other broadcaster in Ireland to acquire it.

    http://www.sbpost.ie/post/pages/p/story.aspx-qqqt=MEDIA-AND-MARKETING-qqqs=mediaandmarketing-qqqid=54063-qqqx=1.asp

But then RTÉ also put it up against VB, surely VB should on between 6pm and 11pm rather then afterwards.

That isn't to suggest that RTÉ are not wrong to put Mad Men on at Midnight, something that I have been complaining about since they put the Practice and Boston Public on at 3am in the morning back in 2003.

    Anyway it's off topic.

I think that RTE buy American shows in "packages", e.g. if you want Desperate Housewives you have to buy CSI Miami and Gossip Girl as well (or whatever). But RTE is supposed to supply a public service - do the Irish people not deserve to watch good TV?

Would be a lot more entertaining if it was Dara O'Briain alright :D

Oh dear, seems like TV3 are telling lies.

or RTE could be telling lies?!

i think VB is on late so that they can take a look at the papers too.

'The Eleventh Hour' only lasts for 30 minutes, sure Vinny's only getting warmed up by then.

And they have comedy to squeeze in too ...

A fresh take on the big stories emerging from the 2011 Election, featuring profiles of the parties campaigning around the country and commentary in the run-up to Election Day. Viewers will be able to comment and join in the conversation via new media, and comedy star Barry Murphy and his team will provide their own satirical look at events

Is it not irresponsible for RTE to clash similar programmes against TV3 like this? This is the sort of thing done for commercial and overall ratings purposes, but RTE are supposed to be providing a service to the public, not concentrating on rating figures.

Frontline seems to have started their Election 2011 shows already.

The Eleventh Hour just posted this ...
Hey, comedy for our show will be coming from the 19th Minute: Barry Murphy, John Colleary (of the sizzling Savage Eye), Eleanor Tiernan and Gary Cooke...
Doesn't leave much time for news in the rest of the half hour.

Thats how i feel about it. They are going to put alot of pressure on one of TV3's big shows.

If the half hour format gets good viewing figures they will prob extend it to the hour. Most of the ministers are afraid of vincent so they will more than likely go on this new show and it will pull in the viewers.

I hope it bombs to be honest.

RTE have changed the name of their late news programme and have installed two new presenters. I'd say Vinny B has nothing to be worried out some how .................

Tonight on The Eleventh Hour's first edition: Democracy Never? Eamon Dunphy, Fintan O'Toole and Elaine Byrne tell us what happened to their fledging political movement.

I didn't know Dunphy was involved in that organisation.

Could have been huge if they had gone for it, but it's a non story now.

Bryan Dobson makes the case for the Eleventh Hour
Appointment to view TV: The Eleventh Hour RTE2 11pm (give it a go, VB doesn't get going until 11.20pm what with all those ad breaks)
    http://twitter.com/bryansixone

    Not the most enthusiastic endorsement!

A programme that starts at 11pm is actually broadcasting in the 12th hour.

If you want a show to be called the 11th hour, then it should be broadcast between 10pm and 11pm.

    RTE...

That's the main news studio... but it's nearly unrecognizable.

So far the whole thing seems incredibly forced and false.

Hang on a second, Elaine Byrne has a full time cushy job as a lecturer.. the other two work in the real world.. How does Elaine think she has the moral higher ground to criticise the other two, when she wasnt prepared to give up her own job?????

What they are discussing is nothing to do with the election.

It's 'what if democracy now had run'

It's completely academic (unless they make a U turn and run)
