What version of windows are you running at home?

Just though this might be an interesting one to get numbers on.

I upgraded to Windows 7 last night, having been running XP on my home machine(s) since I got a pirate copy sometime in 2002/2003. I was a poor student and couldn't justify the €200 or €300 a new copy cost at the time. I later went and bought a legit retail copy around 2006-ish.

Just wondering have many people bothered moving from XP? Most people I know are still running XP on home machines. I've been using Windows 7 on my work machine since last summer, upgraded from Vista, and I now prefer it to XP hence the upgrade at home. Plus my existing machine was underutilised by my 32-bit XP. I didn't prefer Vista over XP, but I think Windows 7 has stolen it.

Also very surprised by the install. I was expecting an epic couple of hours. But it picked up my RAID config straight away, fully installed in about an hour and didn't need me to install drivers for anything. Which was impressive. Ninite is also savage for installing apps, I'd never gotten the opportunity to use it before. The only gripe I had was the necessity to backup and restore data instead of a straight upgrade, but sure I needed to backup my data anyway.

Oh, and anyone wondering why there's no "Linux" option on the poll, the hint is in the forum name...

Went from Vista to 7 and love it. 7 really does show how terrible vista was. Just the boot time alone makes such a huge difference. Vista could take nearly 5 minutes and 7 takes only 1minute (Both OS being clutter free)

I downloaded the public beta for Windows 7 when Microsoft released it two years ago. I had it dual-booted with Windows XP. A week later I got rid of XP and haven't looked back since. Great OS.

Installing Windows 7 was a special moment...Ahhhh.:)

I was already spec-ing a new PC when I installed it, I'd say it will at at least a year to teh PC'c life if not more.:cool:

There was something seriously off with your install if it took 5 minutes to boot Vista! It had a fantastic boot time on my old PC with a Spinpoint F1 as the boot drive, easily comparable to my current PC
Vista gets a lot of stick, but I personally liked it as an OS

Currently have Windows 7 64 bit on my home PC and 32 bit on my work PC

You could have gotten Win 2008R2 workstation free off dreamspark as your a student and its essentially the same as windows 7 :pac:

Very recently upgraded to Windows 7.. not for any reason, as I loved XP, but I provide support so I thought it was time to learn it.. Very good operating system..

All the apps worked when I brought them over .. Had a small bit of trouble with Cubase (which needed to be run in Admin mode) and Paint Shop Pro (which was hindered by Aero display settings)..

Have to say I'm very impressed with it so far... (which means it will probably explode tonight )

Runing Ubuntu v9.10 on laptop and second workstation..

i'm the same. windows 7 on my laptop, and XP in the college. main thing is Aero Snap...i've gotten so used to dragging windows to the side, and auto resizing them, it's a pain in the college without it.

Well what saves me most time and fustration is the taskbar. Right click and all your recent or pinned files come up. Like from word or from browser. It pretty much saves me minutes trying to start explorer looking for what i need. Its just nice and easy.

Also the looks of XP is seriously outdated The OS is ancient at this stage.

And as mentioned above aero snap. Its the most handy feature ever when i need to work and multi task If you got a full HD screen that gives you alot of real estate to work on that just makes it better :P Safely remove device is made easier and faster . Search is made easier faster.

Also no blue screen of death and system stability

- I had rocketdock for shortcuts, so Win 7 is no advantage on that front..
- Had to turn off the Aero to get Paint Shop Pro (cheap Photoshop type product) to work.
- Havent got the hang of the new seach on Win 7.. I used to like the way that you could right click on a folder and search in XP..
- It is certainly good stability wise.. .
- I like the autosizing as well, but havent fully got the hang of it yet..

I have to say I'm pretty shocked by the poll, I would have thought that maybe 50% would have still be on XP.. but I guess it's more to do with the nature of the people that would be on the forum, more so than the norm??

Well i dont see the point of being dependant on old technology. Its inneficient and costs more time in the end. And every one knows. Time is money :P

Upgraded the laptop to 7, built the PC for 7. My dad already hated Vista and he doesnt want to pay to upgrade to 7, but his netbook also has 7 - but its sitting in a drawer

My brother is on Vista but I will show him. Mwhaha.

you have to take in to account the time lost in re-training

Well tbh nothing gets harder with updates. It didnt take me any sort of searching or research to find out how to use WP7.

Another example is cad. Were being trained in college to use 2004 version. In another part of the college they have 2008 which is lol easier to use. And the 2011 version that i tried is a piece of cake. Windows has taken on board that people are getting more dumb with time. Or not even that. Their scared to explore new things and are lazy to put in some effort.

If its a button. yet it does the same thing as the old one but its redisgned and has a new color on it their still going to be scared of it. Cause its a new thing.

Use Windows Vista on my laptop at home. No problems with it, I used to run the Windows 7 beta which was lovely, but once that expired I rolled back to Vista (didn't want to pirate & didn't want to buy either)

7 is def. better than Vista, which is def. better than XP (and it follows so on down the line)

I will say though that I sometimes use Ubuntu, and if Apple released iTunes on Linux I'd be full time on that OS...

I have 3 laptops myself but only use one most of the time.

Acer Aspire 7730 (main laptop): Windows 7/XP Pro dual boot. I hardly use XP these days except for one or two apps I can't get working on 7.

Dell XPS M1210: XP MCE 2005 SP3. Only got this recently (for nothing) so haven't done anything with it yet.

Compaq SLT/286: MS-DOS 5.00/Windows 3.00a. Obviously kept for the retro factor and rarely used for anything other than messing about.

I agree... Vista got way more flack than it deserved. It may not be the revolution that people expected, but it's still better than XP (and not very far behind Windows 7 at all)

Well vista was a resource hogger and back when it came out alot of stuff wasnt compatible with it. For eg. my laptop came with Vista and it was slower than it is now with W7.

But at this stage with all the updates that came out its just as good.

Still no patch on the speed and functionality of Win7 though

Vista was a resource hogger on machines with Scant resources because it was unable to scale itself back unlike Windows 7. On good machines its performance is on par with Windows 7.

well considering that my processor on college laptop measures up to 1.4 ghz i feel that the performance leap on my laptop vista vs w7 was huge. Though as you meantioned i didnt see a massive difference on my 3 and a half year old desktop :P

Been using Windows 7x64 for several months now, excellent OS in my opinion.

Vista is up there with the worst imo, XP was bad in the beginning but the support it got/needed and became very good but it was the reason vista turned out like it did! Best OS since Windows 2000, probably the best OS overall in terms of getting it right the first time round, imo
