Has anyone experienced the new ads on websites where they start up when you go on the page and you cannot turn them down or off? There's nothing you can do bar turning off your sound - this can't be legal!??!

As annoying as the pop up ads on MSN. These companies are getting more and more intrusive and I actually doubt the effectiveness of these ads.

Examples? I've never seen an ad that doesn't have a 'skip this' option

Boardsie Enhancement Suite - a browser extension to make using Boards on desktop a better experience (includes full-width display, keyboard shortcuts, dark mode, and more). Now available through your browser's extension store.

    Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/boardsie-enhancement-suite/

On a porn site and "enjoyment" noises were emitted from one of these ads?

Get the flashblock addon for firefox. Stops sooooo many annoying ads.
I found it did have an issue with Channel 4OD though but there's probably an exception list for it but im too lazy

I find Adblock Plus FF add-on to be great for those ads.

I've come across them, usually made to look like a webcam window that pops up when you enter page. With sound.

i'd go one step further and use NoScript to block everything you don't want. just so handy especially if hte ads aren't from the sites on Adblock's list

Aye, Noscript is really good but can be a pain unless you know what you're doing.
I'd say Noscript is for geeks and AdBlock for normal users :D

When I'm surfing the channels on the web there are ads on one particular site for 'FrontierVille', a flash based game. These ads play very loud music and are on every page of the site, they are in side banners and have a barely-visible mute button.

Ad-block plus removes those ads, peaceful silence :)

Yeah but you can quickly add the page/site you are viewing to AdBlock Plus.

Oh yeah, just remember to allow ads on boards.ie :D

i just find NoScript easier to add certain exceptions to, like preventing the ad sites but allowing the main part of the site.
does get a bit annoying sometimes having to allow exceptions to make buttons work, but i'd rather that than the annoying flash/java ads

of course ;) boards is the exception

You can also use the hosts file to block ads, have a look here:

    http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts2.htm

You can download and update the hosts file entries from here, there are instructions for the different OS's too.

Yes using the host file is the easiest way but i have heard having TOO MANY ENTRIES IN IT can slow down loading,etc........
