I personally think Townend should keep the ride, but will his lack of big race festival experiance count against him.

    Does Ruby have the pick.

I reckon Townend is about 1/3 to ride. Don't think they can jock him off

It's not like they are jocking him off really. Ruby rode the horse before Paul ever did, and in my mind is the stables top jock when it comes to Cheltenham. There is no way on the planet PT is a 1/3 to ride him anyway. I'll give you 1/2 today would you invest at that? It's pretty 50-50 but I'd go for Walsh . It would be nice to think Townend would stay on board but Ruby has a lot of sway and I'm sure he is dying to ride him.

I've no doubt Ruby is dying to ride him but the fact remains that Townend has ridden the horse in his last 5 races, all grade one victories and the only reason Ruby rode him in the champion novice that time was Townend was injured.

I always thought Ruby would take over but not now, it's impossible to take townend off imo.

Have to agree with Richie here and imo they have to keep Townend on board and as someone with a nice antepost investment in the horse i sincerely hope they do, one interesting fact though Townend has never rode a winner in England

lol I like the way your thinking Richie

dont think ruby will pass up the chance of riding him. he is the number 1 jockey for the stable after all. unless he has another good chance on something else. maybe silvinaco conti but i dont think so.

No way that Celestial Halo will turn up for this, what was he beaten by Oscar Whisky 13l only giving 4lbs!

Lol, won an Ascot Hurdle over 2m3f and ascot is as stiff a track as you will find. Has bags of pace aswell and is definitely turning up.

Celestial Halo whether he turns up or not is a bare back number over 2 miles these days

Halo wont turn up, not a hope.

I'll tell you something if Rupert gets the ride we could be looking at a big sunshine Irish gamble and my 9/2 -5/1 on Binocular might not be that far off at all!

I really dont see how anyone would back HF with Ruby on board but not Townend, he hasnt put a foot wrong on the horse

::D I hope you wouldn't put me in the same boat now md :D.. I hate saying it because it was very annoying when put to me on here, but flyer88 are you for real? You just called well known GB Packers Quarter Back Aaron Rogers who has been unbelievable this year by the name of Lopez ?? and said he was poor ... or something along those lines in the Superbowl thread too.

Either will do, both will give the horse a good ride.

I thought the deal Ruby had was if either Mullins or Nicholls was sending a decent prospect over for a meeting Ruby could talk to the other trainer and reach an agreement to take the one coming over. (In this case say to Nicholls I want to ride Hurricane Fly)

I am sure I heard someone saying that and it makes sense that the trainers are amicable about it as neither would want to pish off Ruby by ordering him to ride their horse.

I would have Ruby myself until Townend sorts out the needless cockiness.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 54 ✭✭flyer88

Townend is not a cocky jockey at all....hes a young up and coming jockey and he has no need to be cocky...thats a ridiculous statement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,436 ✭✭✭Morgans

The horse is Townend's ride, just as Golden Silver is, and a few others. There was a long thread on it before. Townend was down to ride the horse the day it pulled out of the Deloitte hurdle won ultimately by Pandorama. Ruby was available to ride that day and wasnt jocked up on either Hurricane Fly or Cousin Vinny.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,838 ✭✭✭Nulty

It also helps Townends case that he rides the horse out every day

Watch his ride on Blackstairmountain in Jan, do you think Ruby would have just looked at Rick twice or do you think he would have pushed Blackstair to the line. Townend will be great but he needs to sort out the cockiness.

I don't think the fact that Townend rides him out makes a huge difference(it will help a bit), Ruby has already sat on him and will know how to ride him.

I have a ungrounded feeling that the connections are loyal and will give Townend the ride but it is Ruby and it is the festival.

The Blackstairmountain ride looked awful alright but he could very well have been told to go easwy on the horse and without those instructions he may well have won. Who knows. I get the impression that Townend is told that a lot. I';m thinking of Golden Silver. I never see Townend get 'McCoy' about Golden Silver and its frustrating. Maybe he knows theres no point in shoving and smacking the horse but it leaves me wondering....

I know what you are saying but connections wouldn't mind hands and heels for 50 yards to get the horse first past the post.

I would be interested to see his strike rate on odds on shots for Mullins, a lot seem to get beaten in moderate races.

How much money would you like to bet.

I think Ruby will get it, he originally had the ride of the horse.
As well as that Townend is still making silly mistakes, I was appauled at Zaidpour loosing to First Lieutenant at Leopardstown.
He should watch Davey Russel and learn to scrub a little. That race was worth 46k you cant take it easy on the favorite in a race like that.

    20 quid

I am guessing his name is Danny Mullins :D.

Seriously though, Ironside has a better chance of sitting on Hurricane Fly for the Champion Hurdle!

I can see why Blackstairmountain would irritate and he would do things differently again if given the chance but I cant see what he did wrong on Zaidpour. Horse wasnt good enough on the day.

As for the ride being Ruby's initially. It doesnt matter.

Hiya, I was annoyed because he just sat on the horse and didnt even ask him to quicken until just before the last. The horse was totaly switched off. Russells horse was being scrubbed from 3 out and kept on amazingly. Had townend tried to get Zaipour upsides a bit earlier it could have been a different race. I dont think he helps his horses enough and I hope Ruby gets the ride.

(although I have backed him in on Mourad today so fingers x)

I know racing is a sport full of opinions so here's mine...

Ruby will be on the fly at cheltenham because he has tons of more experience of the track compared to townend..

Ruby gets the choice because he'll always be no1 in that yard for as long as hes riding..

Don't get me wrong paul hasn't done a thing wrong but experience is vital in big races so id be very very surprised if ruby isn't on..

What about THAT for a ride on Gold and Silver. If it doesn"t prove that Townend is a Brilliant jockey and deserves to stay on Fly then I dont know what will.

Fair dues he did well, I really thought he was out when the other 3 broke away about 3 out.

If this statement doesn't prove how little you know about horse racing then I'll leave it so. ;)

    What's a Gold and Silver
