    Ah, f*ck right off!

Christ, come back Billy Crystal.. all is forgiven!

I like Franco but it's a bit of a ridiculous pairing.. obviously appealing to the younger audience but I wouldn't even expect MTV to think of these two.

Meh. I'm not impressed either, but it's not like either's incapable of delivering a joke written for them.

We'll have to wait and see how they work out, but I actually think they are a really interesting choice. At least the Academy is trying something new. Aside from their youth, they are both very current and upcoming stars, a potentially nice antedote to the long line of washed-up comedians and outsiders who have hosted the Oscars in the past. I don't think the host needs to be a comedian, they just need to be able to give some energy to the proceedings.

not feeling it - at all. I think presenting the oscars is a massive honour that should be earned. Seriously, James Franco and Anne Hathaway - both are great actors but not exactly comedy gold.

Will hosting damage Franco's chances of securing a nomination or win for 127 Hours I hope not :(

FFS just let Neil Patrick Harris do it already!

Franco is alright (not the leader of Fascist Spain btw).

Anne Hathaway is so fcuking bland I'm amazed she gets any recognition. She's not attractive either, a nice, safe, sexless actress for middle America!

I quite like James Franco. He was pretty good in Freaks and Geeks.

    Ella Enhanted hosting the Oscars????

Ah but she she got buck wild in Havoc which seemed to do wonders for her career!

Anne Hathaway hosted Saturday Night Live recently and apparently did very well

Martin and Baldwin did well last year, I enjoyed them as co-hosts

Safe? Appeal to middle America? I take it so that ya haven't read the article where she talks about what she's into in the bedroom. :pac:

what film in your opinion should pick up the oscar for this years best film ?

my choice would be 127 hours. my reasons are it has an amazing soundtrack and a brilliant performance by franco. also the directing in this is once again brilliant by danny boyle and not once in this film was i bored or checking the watch its a gripping masterpiece of a real life event made into a film.

    Anything but The Social Network.

While I don't think it was "ZOMG!! THE BEST MOVIE EVA!!!" I did thoroughly enjoy Inception and made me feel like I was watching a proper visual spectacle in the cinema. My eyes scanning all over the screen when the city folded over / the fight in the corrider / etc.

One of the fewer blockbuster movies made with practical effects and models (for the most-part). Something I always admire Nolan for as he prefers to use practical solutions and the best camera technology rather than in-your-face CGI.

Many of the other films have let me down somewhat recently. It's been a year of "meh"..........not bad but certainly not great.

I thought The Social Network was ok and I like Fincher but I really hope it doesn't clean up at the Oscars.

I think Toy Story 3 should get best film.
Not only was it the strongest of 2010, it was also a perfect ending to one of the greatest movie trilogies ever made.

I can't think of another trilogy that's as consistent as the Toy Story trilogy. There isn't a weak movie in the series.

What other trilogy can boast that?

    100% agree.
I have enjoyed many films this last year. That was streets ahead.

I enjoyed The Social Network but i dont think its good enough to get best picture although i dont think 127 Hours is either.

    I suppose Black Swan.

I haven't seen The Kings Speech yet, but if I had to pick now, it would be The Social Network. In no way did I think the film would drag me in as much as it did. It was brilliantly acted. It was brilliantly directed. It was brilliantly written. It was entertaining. It was interesting. I know some people had problems with it, but I didn't. I loved it.

I loved Inception too, and Toy Story 3. But I think The Social Network was the better film.

really ? i turned it off after an hour and a half was totally bored with the film. the start was interesting but the minute justin timberlake walked on screen it ruined the film for me the mans a terrible actor and the film nosed dived from then on. for me its 127 hours brilliant film a must see

Black Swan will pick up a good few I think.

Portman's in with a good shout at best actress too for that performance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,829 ✭✭✭KerranJast

Of the contenders I've seen Inception, The Kings Speech and The Social Network. The King's Speech was by far the best film.

    - Inception is a very stylish action movie but is given too much credit for being more than that.
    - The Social Network is a very good story of friendship and betrayal but nothing much deeper than that.
    - The King's Speech is a great character piece delving into wide ranging themes such as personal duty, parental expectations, fear of failure, the class system, changing society norms, the dawn of the media age and the battle between Democracy and Facism.

I haven't seen Black Swan or True Grit but have heard great things about both.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,533 ✭✭✭don ramo

i think the kings speach is getting great buzz (plan on seeing it during the week) so it maybe favourite seeing as its released so close to the oscars, some films tend to die down after 2 or 3 months, some times the timing will mean a lot,

from what ive seen, contenders could be

Inception-doubthfull, great show, id watch it again, but its noting special, the effects made it, had a stable story, but the effects i feel probably played more on me than the actual story,

The Social Network-likely, i wouldnt be surprised if it won, acting, directing, script, ticks all the boxes,

Black Swan-so far my favourite, really brought you into the workings of the caracters mind, everything just worked in the film, and it really drew you in,

127 Hours-somehwere between likely and doubthfull, i just dont think the story itself is strong enough, acted and directed brilliantly, but as whole i cant see it happening,

Toy Story 3- i doubth it, maybe in another year will less competition it maybe strong enough, but i think the last 2 months some excellent films have come out, banker for animation, but sadly not best film,

i havent seen True Grit and dont plan on ever seeing another coen brothers film ever again, so i cant coment on that,

other films i think derserve a mention i suppose would be The Town, The Fighter, and Jack Goes Boating, some great performances, and storys there, also 3 great up and coming directors, maybe The Fighter might get one or two awards but the other two i thought were great films, and probably will go unappreciated,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,108 ✭✭✭Lirange

True Grit may pick up some noms. But it was eligible for the Golden Globes. It was released before Black Swan and Blue Valentine in America. But it was snubbed. I think once the actual nominations are released on the 25th we will have a better indication because the Golden Globes are shaping perceptions at the moment. The Screen Actors Guild awards at the end of the month will probably be more indicative.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 89,030 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

I hope The Fighter, The Town and Inception get a few nominations there are all excellent films imo.

I think The Social Network has to be favourite at the moment for best picture and director as it has been cleaning up in other award shows but I'd prefer Inception to get the win.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 164 ✭✭macquarie

I really hope social network doesn't win best picture/director/lead actor/etc, in 5 years time when facebook has been replaced with some other technology or website , the film will have lost a lot of it's appeal. A film about the creation of bebo 6 years ago would not be that enjoyable now. I'm not saying social network is a bad film, but there are far more deserving movies like inception, fighter, black swan, which actually deserve to go down in oscar-winning history.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,844 ✭✭✭Jimdagym

Empire tweeted something earlie about the king that Firth plays in the Kings speech having serious anti-semetic leanings and may actually damage the film at the oscars.

Inception as a modern classics has to win some oscars!!

i honestly dont wanna see social network gets any prize - it is a giant advertisement by using facebook (in a way)....

I completely disagree. People might have gone to see it because it was about Facebook, but it will be remembered for much more than that. Even if the Facebook of the film was a fictional creation, The Social Network would still be a great film. It is a brilliantly constructed time capsule of a particular time, place and generation. People remember Citizen Kane more than they remember William Randolph Hearst. And I think they'll remember The Social Network long after Mark Zuckerberg stops making the front page of Time Magazine.

The Town is definitely the most deserving of all the films I've seen this year, everything else is too far out of the norm like Inception to stand a chance or too Oscar baiting like The Social Network. Not that I dislike any of the potential contenders this year, just that of them all The Town is the least awards pursuing of the lot and the most deserving of them IMO.

Also, bearing in mind there's 10 nominations now for best film, the likes of True Grit stand a better chance of a nom and the nominations will now be considered nearly as much of an honour, something like this I'd imagine:

    Inception
    Black Swan
    Toy Story 3
    True Grit
    The King's Speech
    The Fighter
    The Social Network
    The Kids Are Alright
    127 Hours

10th film is a bit of a wildcard/filler then, unless I've forgotten something, but I'd say Winter's Bone or Blue Valentine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,108 ✭✭✭Lirange

It would be a shame if Winter's Bone isn't one of the top 10 nominees. It'd be a long shot to win but just the recognition of a nomination would bring more exposure for a film like this. It did earn more nominations than the Kids are Alright and Black Swan at the Independent Spirit Awards which are highly regarded by many in the industry. So hopefully that's a good sign that it's in the discussion.

I'll be really disappointed if The Kids Are All Right gets loads of nominations.
Honestly, thought it was terrible, so bad that I nearly left, only reason being that I've never left the cinema before a film has finished, a matter of principle you could say.

Haven't seen The Kings Speech yet, but I'd like The Fighter for best picture, Portman for best actress and Bale for best supporting actor.

I honestly think that if The Social Network does get nominations, it won't win much.
Has too much of a gimmick thing going on because of fact that it is based around a product.

I just realised I completely forgot about The Town in that first list, there goes Winter's Bone and Blue Valentine so!

Thing is though, with them now nominating 10 films, The Kids Are Alright can get the Best Film nod and in the eyes of the academy that is accolade enough and it can be left out of other cactegories where there's only half as many noms. With that in mind I'd say the other categories will look something like this:

    Best Director:
    David Fincher
    David O Russell
    Darren Aronofsky
    Ben Affleck
    Tom Hooper

Leaving Inception, Toy Story 3, 127 Hours, True Grit and The Kids Are Alright out of the director nominations

    Best Actor:
    Jesse Eisenberg
    Mark Wahlberg
    Colin Firth
    James Franco
    Jeff Bridges

Again, Kids Are All Right doesn't get a mention, nor Inception, Toy Story 3, The Town and Black Swan

    Best Actress
    Natalie Portman
    Helena Bonham Carter
    Jennifer Lawrence
    Annette Benning
    Julianne Moore

Might seem sexist but this is just about the only area I'd expect Kids Are All Right to come into the frame.

I know most of the acting noms I'm speculating above are from films also nominated for Best Film which isn't a guarantee but it's fifty fifty for the purpose of this example but also IMO it's the way films have gone this year, there's a fairly rigid selection of Oscar worthy films released.

Helena is down as supporting actress so I'd say Nicole Kidman will take her spot in the best actress nominations

Have you seen How to Train your Dragon? Far superior film to Toy Story 3 if you ask me.

Anyway, I reckon it will be between The Social Network and Inception. I reckon it will be the former owing to the fact that the Globes are usually a good indication of who wins what in the Oscars. Not always, but usually.

That's what I reckon. But what I'd like to win is a different story. Loved Winter's Bone and Dogtooth but Hollywood don't care about them.

However, there are films coming out that I have not seen yet. One of these is by Iniarritu. A near-genius in my opinion. And Javier Bardem is tipped by some to win the Best Actor award for it.

    My choices would be

    Film : Social Network
Director : Darren Arnovsky (or however it's spelt - Black Swan)
    Actress : Natalie Portman
Actor : I'd like Ryan Reynolds to get a nod but cant see it happening so it'll prob go to Colin Firth.
Supporting Actress: Diane Wiest for Rabbit Hole
Supporting Actor: Geoffrey Rush for The Kings Speech

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 89,030 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

    I'd love to see

Inception and Nolan win best film, original screenplay and director. Di Caprio for best actor for either Inception or Shutter Island. Christian Bale for best supporting actor and Melissa Leo for best supporting actress. The Town and Affleck win for best adapted screenplay and a nomination for Renner for best supporting actor and best director nomination for Affleck.

Hope The Social Network cleans up all the non-acting awards. Eisenberg was excellent in it too but not sure if his performance is going to be considered oscar-worthy.

But Best Film/Director/Score/Adapted Screenplay are all thoroughly deserved and I'd say it's got a great chance of winning all 4 of those.

Course it's just so voters in the academy can seem like their 'down with the kids'.

I kinda like Franco he's been good in most things I've seen him in, but I have also heard he was a bit of a weirdo (even from someone who has met him)... but I'd still give him the benefit of the doubt he seems no worse than any other actor.

Not my favourite performance but would have preferred him to Bridges. True Grit was entertaining but it wasn't his best. I think Barbara Hershey was hard done by especially. I think her performance was the most impressive in Black Swan.
