    Hi,

What would be say the 5 best excercises (apart from pull-ups and shrugs - do them already) to give the whole of the back a proper workout.

I presume Deadlift & Barbell Row are going to be two of them.

    Thanks in advance

Deadlift, chin-ups, pull-ups, one-arm dumbbell rows, barbell rows, back extensions, T-bar rows, lat-pull downs, seated rows, upright rows and shrugs.

Pull-ups, Shrugs, Deadlists, Most Rows (don't see the point of listing every row I can think of, do the ones you like)

As the others said: Deadlifts, pullups, rows.

Don't plan to do them all in the one session though.

    Why?

Sounds like the OP is trying to piece together a back workout for himself.

    Yes pretty much.

I took it that he meant don't do 6/7 different back exercises in the same workout but I could have misread it.

Basically was just looking to get a workout for a day doing back, I always read that many people neglect their back and I have been guilty of that too.

I normally do this for back:

    deads
    chins
    rows
    facepulls
    shrugs

Are you going to train Posterior Deltoids on back day too?

    That's exactly what I meant.

Throwing every back exercise under the sun at it is not the answer though.

In my experience if I deadlift with proper intensity, there is no way my grip is going to be strong enough to do BB or DB rows properly.

What is the rest of your workout like? What are deadlifting, squatting, benching etc.?

If you've neglected your back for a long time why not do 2 sets of rows (one horizontal and one vertical) for every set of pressing? do it on your chest day to ensure you get the work in!

do you use straps? If you can row more with good form but your grip is holding you back thats what I'd do.

My grip isn't holding me back. I don't ever need to do rows and deads in the same session. I do Bill Starrs 5x5.
