Shows you're giving up on

So, at the mid season, apart from what's been axed (out of your control), what shows are you giving up on (in your control) ?

    For me:

Nikita - has promise, but just find the whole premise predictable, every week it's the same thing. Nikita destroys the mission with help from Alex while barely getting away.

Hawaii 5-0 - Had high hopes for this. But after watching four episodes, I have the rest racked up & no inclination to watch them.

No Ordinary Family - Episode one was enjoyable, but I haven't got to two yet & it's not really bothering me, so I reckon I might let it slide.

Outsourced - Again, really wanted to like this, there's some good moments in it, but it's all a bit samey. Have one more episode to watch before making up my mind.

    Out of the new shows:

No Ordinary Family - terribly paced, horribly written and characters with zero depth. Watched til midseason hoping it'd improve. It didn't!

The Cape - not entertaining enough, too cheesy and ratings are shocking. Pass!

Hawaii 5-0 - just seemed to tread the same ground week after week.

To be honest, only worthwhile new shows on network TV this season for me are 'Raising Hope', 'Nikita' and 'Outsourced'.

Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Modern Family & The Walking Dead are the only shows I follow.

I did follow Dexter but up until this season I've had enough of that shíte, it's not same show it was back in season 1 & 2. Would've quit after season 3 but John Lithgow single-handily saved it for me.

    "Shut up, cúnt!" :D

The Walking Dead started well then went downhill for me I dont know if I will continue with it tbh

I watched a few episodes of No Ordinary Family and I actually hate the family dont mind the other characters

In Treatment is getting my personal axe although HBO may get there before me. I should say The Office but morbid curiosity might mean I keep watching. Outsourced just doesn't seem to know what it wants to do as a show and while it's mildly entertaining I wouldn't care if it was scrapped so it might make way if a more worthwhile show comes along. Lie To Me, if it's renewed, might not make it as far as my screen.

There are a few that I hope get canned (original Shameless, Desperate Housewives...) but will keep watching no matter how crap they get. I'm bored of 30 Rock, but not quite that bored yet.

Chuck is the main one. It's just gone downhill so badly it's sad to watch but I will probably tune in on the off-chance of a good episode every once in a while.

Gave up on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia after struggling through a horrible Season 4 where it became almost a parody of itself.

Won't be going back to Boardwalk Empire next season, don't think it deserves half the credit it's getting. It hasn't got anywhere near the depth of shows like the Sopranos that it seems to be getting compared to and was just boring for most parts.

30 Rock is really trying my patience.

I'll probably stick with Dexter until the end no matter what but this last season stunk to high heaven.

Gave up on Bones this season and NCIS, didn't even bother starting the current ones.
As regard new offerings, think I'll be ditching Hawaii-5-0, even glimpses of shirtless Alex O'Loughlan isn't worth the laughable dialogue and rubbish plot lines.
Started no Ordinary Family over the Christmas but only on episode 3 and not bothered about going any further.

Haven't started the Cape yet so will watch a couple before deciding.
Sticking with Nikita, although it's predictable, I think it is still entertaining.

given up on V. watched the first episode of the 2nd season, and it was just brutal.

going to stockpile a few shows and check out the general mood about them here before deciding whether to watch them. The cape and the event are among them.

sticking with Nikita and going to give Fringe the benefit of the doubt, given that it's finally getting interesting now, though the prospect of cancellation isn't doing any favours.

This year I gave up Glee(when it came back after ep13) 30 Rock, House and I came *this* close to quitting on Sons Of Anarchy, but the final few episodes and incredible finale saved it.

You should check out the latest season, it was brilliant.

Gave up on Gossip Girl couldn't be bothered with the shallow plot lines anymore and gave up on CSI the characters got shíte!!

Gave up on 30 Rock and Glee pretty early in their respective seasons, utter crap.

I haven't even bothered with the office this season, but I'll probably watch Carell's exit and the episodes that follow out of curiosity.

I gave up on V midway season one. I pulled out the original series on DVD and just rewatched that.

i have downloaded all of the first season of Lost Girl, Haven and Nikita and am really struggling with them so when they are finished thats it
I didn't bother starting this season of the Mentalist and after 2 episodes of The Cape i hope it quietly flutters away

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,489 ✭✭✭iMax

Just decided to ditch Outsourced, it doesn't know where it's going. No Ordinary Family also, which is a shame because that concept had potential.

i'm surprised a bit at Lost Girl. thought it was one of the strongest shows this year. a bit episodic, but a strong show imo. what turned you off about it?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,634 ✭✭✭✭Richard Dower

^ but i DO understand why folks may not like it....it's very culty and genre + it's very low budget. It's a show you either love or hate, you need to a least watch past ep. 3/4 as that's when the humour and clever dialogue kicks in.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,005 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

Dropped 'The Mentalist' this year when I realised Patrick Jane is a smug git.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,466 ✭✭✭Forest Master

Gave up on V after 6 episodes.

Gave up on Madmen after 8 episodes.

Gave up on Breaking Bad after 7 episodes.

Gave up on Sons of Anarchy after 4 episodes.

Gave up on 30 Rock after 13 episodes.

Gave up on The US Office after 5 episodes.

I'll be giving up on Shameless probably in a few weeks if it doesn't pick up - been watching since S1.

Coronation Street, the first 50 years were great but it's gone down hill the last few weeks

Sons Of Anarchy - I liked the start of season 1, but after that it just nose dived imo. The end of season 1 was ridiculous and season 2 went even further.

The Mentalist - This was never really good or that smart, lost faith when they had that psychic lady on which made Jane question himself as to whether it was all real.. and then they brought her back! Also the predictability of having a red-john case at the end of every season or mid season if things get slow is just tedious.

30 Rock - I still like the Jack & Liz stories, but very tired of Jenna and Tracy at this stage.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,788 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Now, much as I love the show I can understand why folks might give up on Mad Men but if you give up on Breaking Bad you should really just have your TV and computer taken away from you.

I keep meaning to get into SoA and Dexter but it sounds like they're not worth sticking with for very long.

By all means ignore SOA, but Dexter has a fantastic first couple of seasons that are worth the watch on their own. The third season is an acquired taste I think, but the 4th season is also very good, if a bit slow to start. You can stop watching after that :)

Watched the first season of Glee but gave up shortly after Season 2 began, when the dark humour of early episodes was replaced with sentimental, mawkish shíte.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,567 ✭✭✭Dymo

    House, same crap every week.
The Event, thought it started well but it's poor with no decent storyline.
Glee after the first 10 episodes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3 pulsewind

I am giving up on Greys Anatomy

For a few years the patient, medical stuff was interesting and the characters were interesting and likable, but now its just complete rubbish I think

Sandra Oh and Kevin McKidd are the only decent actor/actress couple on the show, but because they are only seen every 4th or 5th episode thats just not enough to interest me.

The day they invented the whole Mercy West thing and Teddy was the day the last nail went into the coffin - nothing will save it now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

It would take allot for me to give up on a show (for god sake I stuck with Heroes till the end).

I did give up on mad men after about 7 episodes but I am going to give it another shot due to its popularity on this fourm.

I'm ashamed to say I have never seen a single minute of Dexter

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 217 ✭✭Lynnsie

I gave up on Desperate Houswives after 2 or 3 seasons, I got really sick of the same plotlines every season - strange new person moves in, they're hiding a secret, someone dies blah blah blah...

Oz - after about the 4th one its to slow moving
Glee- just lost interest after first 6 shows or so

Nikita and Dexter - Have not totally given up but Nikita is getting a bit far fetched she always just gets away no matter il give it a few more and Dexter i loved at the start but last series was not the best, it used to end and you were always left guessing but it ended with everything happy and working out perfect, so it's a might on these two.

Mine too. I ripped through the first 4 seasons in the last year, then when season 5 started I wasn't sure if I'd burned out or the show had taken a dive. It's not a programme I look forward to, it's just on in the background now.
    ixoy wrote: »

I dropped this too. Everything seems to go round and round and not actually get anywhere. Jane was good in the first season, but I never warmed to Lisbon. The only other character I liked was Cho, mainly for his deadpan comedy.

Police procedurals aren't doing much for me any more. Not necessarily just police procedurals, medical ones (House) have fallen off my radar too.

I think Nikita is a great show, and i've never liked Alias type shows....it's just good quality tv, probably the best network show of the season.

I decided a while ago to just stop watching shows that don't blow me away. I've enough shows in the backlog that I never watched when they first aired to fill the gap (i.e the west wing, sopranos, six feet under...etc)

    I've given up on:

    Lie to me
    The mentalist
    CSI (all of them)
    House

and shows of their ilk. There's a name for shows of that format that I can't remember (nor find) that's just too repetitive. The format each week is too rigid. I've found I only enjoy shows that progress a story rather than follow a format.

Even if I get to a point where I have nothing new to watch, I'd rather rewatch a good show from a decade ago than watch muck for the sake of it.

I used to buffer a season in advance, but the way things are now with shows getting axed abruptly, I'm letting shows run through to completion before watching them (e.g SoA)

The exception is shows from HBO of course. They've never really disappointed me with quality so I trust the channel enough to invest in a new show as soon as it starts.

The shows that are currently still airing that I'm watching are (afair):

    Breaking Bad
    Boardwalk Empire
    Mad Men
    Bored to Death
    Hung
    Curb your Enthusiasm
    Dexter
    Fringe
    Modern Family

I think that's what 'procedural' refers to although good shows are able to advance a main story by using self-contained episodes. I don't know if there's a separate categorisation for shows like The Shield which do this as opposed to Lie To Me which never goes anywhere at all.

I'd have given up on Lie to Me ages ago probably but it's a 'compromise' show in our house (when I want to watch Californication and she wants to watch Quantum Leap reruns, on it goes :D) and Tim Roth is always entertaining. He's wasted on such a lame-duck show though.

Does anyone have an estimated time of death for Weeds? I wish they'd axe it already so I could stop watching it.

I gave up on Gossip Girl, it's far too repetitive and the show seems to go around in circles. Once they left school it became shíte.

Some shows I really really liked but have gotten quite irritating.

House - it's just the same episode every episode with a different disease
Bones - Amazing how someone as smart as Brennan is still so stupid
Lie to Me - Great premise for a show but with each episode Tim Roth's character gets more and more annoying.
V - This was never that good, but I haven't quite given up on it yet, but things aren't looking good.

I'm giving up on Fairly Legal, utter twonk....tried two eps. and i'm out. I gave up on US Skins, i'm considering giving up on Lights Out as well, it's not great.

The Cape....it's really bad but i'll see it through to the end. Also gave up on Portlandia....not my cup of cha.

Lie to me is a good one I watched season one But looking back I only stuck with because of Tim Roth. Didn't even finish out the full episode of S02E01.

I think house gets a hard time, yes it is the same episode repeated but every now and again they do throw out some great episodes (the ones that go off the usual formula).

As a rule I just can't stand "Cop Shows" as I call them CSI, Cold Case, Bones and so on but one that I stuck through is Castle(mainly again because of Nathan Fillon). I enjoyed season 1 but have not bothered yet to really watch season 2. Think I might give it a look today.

Haven't see it yet, check out the Luc Besson movie.

Will continue with The Event when it returns but I can't see it lasting.

House but I gave up after it began becoming repetitive.

How did it take people so long to give up on Glee? It was terrible from the beginning.

Despite the cheese, it was largely pretty well-written at the beginning. Humour was sharp, biting and took a few sly knocks at the clichéd high-school genre.

But at the mid-way point, it took a nose dive and turned exactly into the cliché of a show it once made fun of. That plus the writing turned to shi*e, characters were even more 2-dimensional than normal and even started shoving horribly contrived messages on religion down the viewers throat.

Dumped 'Entourage' earlier this year for having just annoying a$$holes as its primary cast.

'House' is one I'm close to giving up. Hugh Laurie is good and all, but it's so painfully formulaic that I'm finding it hard to stomach after seven seasons.

'The Office' ... again close but haven't gotten there yet. There's enough funny moments to keep me hoping but really, it pales so much next to new stuff like 'Modern Family' and (recently discovered for me) 'Community'.

'Big Love' I'd have probably dumped after last year, except that this is its final year.

Still with that bollocks? You tried this on the 'Glee' forum and got nowhere. Or, to be fair, do you accuse 'Entourage' of pushing the straight agenda?

I think the writers have given up on this too. Season 5, where they try to pick a new team, was the last season they tried something new, which was fun (house going crazy wasn't that fun/interesting imo).

Same here, the only reason I'm still watching is to see what the transition will be like between bosses and the addition of a few characters. I'm not really optimistic, but curious.

Also very tempted to dump Californication since they've brought the wife + daughter back into the story. Those two could easily be the most irritating duo on tv.

No way, Californication is one of the best things on TV!
