Anyone else getting woefully slow download speeds on FS premium? I'm getting around 70-110 kb/s the last couple of days.

i've been using FS free, and been getting normal speeds of 300-400 kbps off them.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

I have a premium Fileshare account. I downloaded a file which consisted of 6 parts - parts 1 to 5 downloaded very quickly (as would be expected with Premium account) but part 6 is stuck on 24 kB/s! (I've a 100mb/s connection!).

    Anyone know what's happening here?

    Cheers.

Sometimes certain Fileserve servers act the bollix, and you get such sympthoms, just wait ot out or look if another file host has the same file mirrored ;) Rapidshare free has decent download speeds

I was just thinking though - I have a 100mb/s connection (and speedtest confirms this) so shouldn't the downloads be downloading at that rate??

UPC are and have been throttling the **** out of most of the file providers based in Asia. Fileserve being one of them.

    Ah the bastards!

    Anyway around this?

Also noticed that my Fileserve premium wont work on JDownloader - says its an invalid account despite the fact it is valid

Is there evidence to support this? I have a Rapidshare premium and speeds are lightening fast. I do think its just the "quality" of these cheaper filehosts is the issue. Fwiw on Eircom connections etc. I never get full speed from Fileserve! I have noticed Fileserve getting much slower lately though, on 50meg and was only getting around 20~meg download speeds, I think its a fileserve issue.
Filesonic also seems to be quicker than FS

Sometimes FS are working on their API and this can happen, try updating JD, see what happens!

I find Fileserve fast for recently uploaded files but older files it can be woefully slow. I guess that is something to do with their setup or traffic management.

Yep, I have access to a 8mb Vodaphone Home DSL line, a 24mb un-contended business eircom DSL line, a 100mb UPC line and 60mb of a leased fibre line. UPC are throttling the **** out of downloads. I can get 10mb at my home UPC line, 30mb if I push a huge amount of downloads. I can pull full or close to full on all other lines without having well over 40 active connections open.

I find that I could have 6 parts going at ~80-90KB/s.

If I pause 5 of them, the 1 remaining will still hover around 80-90KB/s

Fileserve are complete crap, I'll never give them money again. I get between 20kb/s - 110kb/s from them and 2MB's from others. They don't care when you contact them either!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,065 ✭✭✭Fighting Irish

I use to have RS premium and maxed out my UPC 30mb connection nearly every time
I have filesonic now and usually get between 300kb/s-1.5mb/s
I also have fileserve and i constantly get between 30kb/s-150kb/s

I've noticed the same using jDownloader.
Increasing the Max Con. to 8 and Max Dls. to > 4 helps slightly for me using UPC 25Mbs broadband.

Rapidshare has been superfast for me but the last 2 weeks Fileserve has been a complete joke.Might give Filesonic a go or go back to Rapidshare, although I'd love to try Usenet but not sure how really.

Usenet is more expensive than filehosts last I looked, plus any decent newsbin site needs money!

Isn't usenet (or news groups in general) about $11 a month? Works out much more expensive than the other options ...... saying that it may be the only / best option soon.

Rapidshare is a tenner a month.

It's lots cheaper than you think, it's cost me $100 per year for unlimited, there's always a good deal somewhere if you shop around:
    http://www.newshosting.com/partners/?a_aid=techpatio&a_bid=01636e94

    As for the indexing sites:
    NZBMatrix.com is $10 for lifetime
    Newzbin.com 10p per week

The main reason to change is the quality of choice of the indexing sites, everything is commented and great quality

Fileserve free gives me 400 kB/s
Wupload free gives me 500 kB/s
Megaupload free gives me full whack

Once you know about resetting your router & don't mind captchas why would you need to pay for any of them.

Not any use for us cable users, Dynamic but 'sticky' IPs :P A router reboot won't change the IP, I've gone for years with the same one :P

Fine if you are a very light downloader or have a slow connection as above.

Premium accounts are aimed at heavier downloaders who need higher speed, download things comprised of dozens/hundreds of links, download while they are not at the computer, can't reset their IP hundreds of times a day because it interferes with other activities etc. If you can queue up 50 gigs and leave it during the day or overnight then that is worth the price of premium compared to sitting there for a few weeks typing captchas and resetting your router.

Although I will say that MU is great as a free user.

    Still $180 per year...

I'm on UPC 50Meg too and get max speed on many a torrent. UPC sure is not throttling any of that. And I pay per gig on one or two usenet servers - get about 200GB for $20 - does me for about a year :)

I usually buy in 3 month intervals, UPC do have a FUP which torrents (I'm assuming private sites) will use up in no time, having too keep a 1:1 ratio and all that crap. Torrents do actually piss me off and are only used now as a "last resort" :)

Aye, once you're used to luxury it's hard to go back to basics :D

If you're forking out a decent amount is there any reason you're not using usenet? Sure you can't beat that in speed / availability? Or am I missing something with those rapidshare / fileserve sites?

And BTW I've gone over the fair use limits with UPC regularly, sometimes almost solely on torrents and I've never heard anything from them. Never got throttled either. My average traffic over the years would be about half the fair use or less, so maybe they let me away with it...

Must be something with UPC and Fileserve, getting 20-60kbps at home ( Sandymount ) and getting Full speeds in the University ( who I assume arn't UPC ) kind of annoying to be honest

This is a little all over the place but are my findings on various filesharing sites:

Fileserve has always been really slow for me. Premium and free. Free gets me ~60kb/s while Premium is only ~80kb/s. Not worth the money by a long shot.

Filesonic was a little better with ~150kb/s free and 250kb/s Premium. Worth it if you have a lot to download. Megaupload (RIP) was at times awful though. About 50kb/s on Premium and a pathetic 10kb/s on free unless it was the middle of the night in which case both rose to between 200 and 300kb/s. Wupload is good enough on free at ~250kb/s. Never tried Premium.

Rapidshare was the easy winner. Up to 2mb/s on free and up to 5mb/s on Premium. Only problem is it was too expensive for how little it was used on the grand scheme of things. If I was downloading 250GB (my monthly limit) every month with only Rapidshare, it'd be worth it but since I never have, free is more than good enough.

Hotfile, Depositfiles etc all get stayed away from but it's starting to look like they'll be needed soon which is a shame as free only gives me between 20 and 60kb/s for any of them.

Not really relevant any more considering Filesonic, Fileserve and host of others have effectively shut down after Megaupload going.

Fileserve was still live for me last night. Haven't seen any live filesonic links lately and its been an age since I've seen hotfile (didn't they lose a courtcase? ).

Aren't fileserve based in Asia? Can't see an american courtcase affecting them too much. We shall see.
