What handicap will you be at the end of the year fingers crossed.I'm currently 18 and by the end of the year i plan to be down to at least 15. It's the first year I'm going to be playing in regular competitions and I plan to put in a lot of practice also. It will be good to look back at next December

I just want a cut, any cut big or small will do me!!! Only started playing competitions last year and all year played in buffer zone or got 0.1 back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,185 ✭✭✭G1032

I was off 4 at the start of 2009 and the aim was to get to 3. I ended up off 5.
The aim for last year was again to get down to 3. I ended up off 6!!!!
I'll aim to be down to 4 again but golf will have to be put on the back burner in mid summer as there is a baby on the way!!!
If I can be off 4 or 5 I'll be happy enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,893 ✭✭✭alxmorgan

Started at 18 and only played a handful of comps last year so didn't move.
    1 cut , three 0.1s means exactly 18.0
Was playing well recently (until weather fecked everything) so hoping for 16 this year.
I think my putting stats will be everything really
When the putter is working well (and rest of game doesn't completely desert me) I should be capable of 16 I think

It would be nice to get to 10 or 11 but don't really care too much this year. Just want to improve consistency a bit.

first gui handicap last year of 15 got down to 12 .wud love to get to single figures but realistic maybe 10 could be reachable.ill be happy to get to 10, delighted to get lower.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,550 ✭✭✭Myksyk

Currently 10.6. Single figures is the goal. Think I learned a lot from the appalling changes I made last year to my swing which sent me in the opposite direction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 265 ✭✭Halfprice

off 6 and once i can stay in singles figures i'll be happy. Be nce to get to 4 anyway:cool:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,224 ✭✭✭DH2K9

Off 19, the goal is 10 this year. A lot of hard work ahead....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,059 ✭✭✭Screaminmidget

Started last year, got handicap of 15, now down to 11. Hoping for about 8/9 at end of this year.

Fair play, that's ambitious. I'm off 5 too and would love to get to 2 but I'd be very happy if I could get to 3.something.

Currently 16.9, aiming for 13 by end of the year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 496 ✭✭Jasonw

Started 5 years ago off 16. First goal to get to single figures. Achieved in year 2. Next goal was 6. Achieved last year. Currently off 6.5 the next step is catagory 1. I'll reevaluate if I can get to there. Worked hard on my swing over the winter so I'm feeling good about my chances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 142 ✭✭Ben1010

Starting off 12 and hoping to get it to single figures or even 10.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,317 ✭✭✭Dublin Spur

I'd be happy to maintain my current handicap (5)

Don't practice enough to get much lower, actually I don't practice at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 935 ✭✭✭pinkdoubleeagle

Playing off .6 at the moment. Hoping to get to scratch and play in some of the championships

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭the lawman

Will be getting my first GUI this year. Currently play off 14 in the two socities I play in so will be interesting to see what I'll be off GUI.

Plan to be heading towards 12 by end of year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 493 ✭✭hades

This will be my first full year, have a GUI handicap of 18, would be happy to get to 15 this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 tran

had to give up hurling 2 years ago so took up the golf for something to do. given handicap of 13 and now off 2.2. going to take it seriously this year. might even change the hurley grip.:)

2.4 at the moment, looking to get to 0.4. Huge amount of work to do obviously but no point in setting "achievable" goals :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 183 ✭✭Anto12

Started off 2 years ago with 17.5 , my first GUI handicap - down to 11.2 now .. hope to get to 10 or below .. well thats the aim ..:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,648 ✭✭✭AGC

Started last year at 2 and went to 4(A lot of Friday nights out with and early tee time Saturday!), last qualifying comp managed to get it back to 3. Bit of work over the next few weeks and hope to get it back down to 1 if possible during the summer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,645 ✭✭✭Webbs

Off 6.8, down from 14 last year, aim is to get to 5 this year, though realistically would settle for finishing year at 7, was very hard at end of year to play to the 7 and think I need a settling in time at single figure

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,848 ✭✭✭soundsham

From 8 to 10 hopefully this year
Then next year out to 12
Work hard at my game then to make Purcell team the following year

Concentrate and practice your short game rather than the long game, saved me loads of shots on a round - and dont let a bad shot affect you, to use the cliche, take your medicine and move on, dont try a miracle shot to get you out of trouble.

Funnily enough I went from 22 to 15 last year.
Also funnily enough, I did exactly as Webbs recommends, especially the concentration part. That was the one giant leap I made. Instead of just walking up and slashing I actually put a bit of thought in for 10 seconds.

Of course that worked for me because my concentration was so pathetic. But I certainly think acting more like a golfer should help: getting into not necessarily the clichéd zone but a 'zone' of sorts, one characterised by a clued-in approach to the game.

Also, keep fighting during the round even if you start badly. Off a higher handicap there's great scope for strong finishes. I rescued a few 38 / 39 points after unpromising starts.

Off 13 at the moment. Have tried for the last 2 year to get to single figures. Unfortunately its still the goal.

Everybody seems to say practice your short game but is that just hitting a few chips and putts or can anybody give me a few short game drills.

    Cheers

should be doable all being equal, have halfed my handicap the last two seasons and not planning on changing any equipment this year (says he who just picked up a new driver today lol, well thats another story).

If I make it I'll update you guys and we'll try & spur each other on a bit, that GUI most improved golfer was good incentive last year, hope it comes back this season.

Spent most of last year of 18 and went out to 19 towards the end of the season so this year I would hope to get down to 15. Playing well at the moment but as we all know when the cuts and .1s come in it could well be a different story

    Hi Guys,
Joined club year before last and started off on 20,now down to 17 hoping to get to 10 or 12 this year.Playing well at the mo,got fitted for clubs in carton in october and have to say they seem to be doing the job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,103 ✭✭✭derra

Off 12.4, realistically looking at hovering between 10 and 11 at end of season but i believe i can get to 9 with some hard work.
Couple lessons booked to help matters hopefully and gain some consistency.
Club selection is one of the things i have to get right this year, is it a 5 or a 6 iron shot, plays too much in my thoughts addressing the ball.

11 at the moment and hopefully single figures by the end of the year. would love to be in junior scratch territory this time next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86 ✭✭Dormy

11 to 8 last year without ever getting more than 39 pts!!
Target is 6 but the way I've been playing since winter rules came in November would suggest I'll do well to stay in single figures.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,736 ✭✭✭ssbob

I am getting a GUI this year for the first time, I have never shot less than 100 strokes so I am guessing I will be starting at 18 and moving up towards 20 but I hope to be playing to 18 by the end of the year.

My putting is horendous, have been counting my putts lately, took 45 in one round, shot 115 that day!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 391 ✭✭Paulusmaximus

starting off the year at 2.1. I'd love to get down to 0.8 or low enough so that i could consistently get into the major championships...

What do you reckon will get into the West this year as a mater of interest?

Not sure, should be a bigger field this year because its a bit later in the year, however, home internationals and interprovincials are in Rosses Point this year, so that should bring more players to it. I'd hazard a guess at about 0.7-0.9

Thanks. Best of luck with getting down

All depends on how many International teams travel.

Great event, always enjoyed it, probably the best of the year. Pity it isn't on in the middle of summer

Got handicap of 21.0 in November... Aiming for 17.0 by end of year!

Achievable if i start practicing and stop trying to lash it

Went from 18 to 15 last year (22 - 18 year before). But it was a very disappointing year for me. I vastly improved my short game, probably by about 10+ shots / round.

Alas I completely lost my long game and nothing could save it. I got disheartened and took a break, followed by an injury..... as of now I have not swung a club since August. I actually think that might help me. Hopefully I'll have forgotten all the stupid "fixes" I tried and get back to my basic swing that served me well.

Anyway, this year I'm hoping to push on and finally get down to 12 :o

Can you explain how you acheived the 10+ shots improvement to someone who has similar ambitions...18 to 15!
    cheers
