I only did one cycling "event " last year and it was the second Bray Wheelers event later in the season. That was so good that I'll defo be trying to make this one! :)

Are you guys BW members by any chance? Are new members able to join around now? Are cycling clubs the kind of places you need to get recommended by other people before you can join? Also is it expensive?

Yes new members are able to join right now, it is €50 for the year if you want to take part in Club races, €40 for Leisure members, you will also need to apply for a Cycling Ireland license which is €55 for a club competition license and €20 for a non competition license, however if you want to take part in open races, i.e A4, A3 etc the license fee is €85 for restricted competitions or €120 for full competition all detail on the above here :http://www.braywheelers.com/downloads/Joining_BWCC.pdf

You could also come out for a spin or 2 with us at weekends to make your mind up, we normally meet at the top of the flyover bridge in Kilmacanogue every Sat and Sun, for a 10am departure, thats those of us in the south Dublin/Bray area, we also meet up with other members along the way on the main N11, i.e,those from Kilcoole, Greystones, Newcastle, Newtownmountkennedy areas

Nice one thanks for the details! Am I right in saying then that as a beginner not wanting to enter races but just enter random events around the place the € 40 + € 20 would cover me for the year and mean I don't have to buy these one-day licences to do any events?

Always a great event, looking forward to it.

Wouldn't mind joining Bray either, nice kit :)

Yes it should do, if you have any further questions, you should contact Liam Murphy, his phone number is on the subs form I posted the link to earlier, he will be able to answer all your questions as regards fees etc, and sort out your CI license for you should you join the club

What sort of route/time do you go out for ? Is there different groups doing different lengths ?

Have yet to renew my membership! Trying to figure out which club kit would suit me best and make my decision based on that, Orwell is normally bottom of the list in that regard :)

The routes vary from week to week. yes there are different groups doing different lengths, the lads that are training for the racing season leave Kilmacanogue at 9:30,this would be for those of a high fitness level, as the lads do training specific intervals and it's a high paced spin.
The other groups leave Kilmacanogue at 10am, both Sat. and Sun., these normally split around Ashford, for those doing a long route, or those doing a short route, but bear in mind the distance that you are cycling to Kilmac, should you do so, some of the guys/gals drive to Kilmac with their bikes and take it from there. The set route, is normally the long one, which is normally posted on Bray Wheelers website on a Thursday night, but a lot of people tend to do shorter spins. A good starting point for a beginner would be Kilmac-Ashford and back via Newtownmountkennedy, but you could stay on the N11 the whole way back,we tend not to,as its quieter and safer to go through Newtownmountkennedy. This would be about 30-40kms and its fairly flat.(The Glen Of The Downs on the way back can be a bit of a challenge when you are tired or not used to it, it's very deceptive looking,i.e it's not as flat as it looks and there's normally a headwind).

All groups on the 10 am spin will stop for a coffee and a chat at some point, usually in Mount Usher in Ashford, but can vary depending on where the spin is going. As regards time, that can be entirely up to yourself, I personally leave my house @9:30am and arrive back home between 1 and 3pm depending on how far I am going (or how long we stay in the coffee shop ;))

NOTE: no one gets left behind, if you are struggling, someone will stay with you,its always a good idea to bring plenty of fluids (I would recommend 2 bottles, even though you might not drink them all) and some food, nutri grain bars and bananas are a good start and fit nice in your back pocket. We've all had bad days, that started out fine, then suddenly you just dont have the strength to turn the pedals, and its always nice to have someone with you to help you along.

What sort of average page do these spins go at for beginners? I find when doing lots of mountain cycling I end up around 20km/h, but if more flat road cycling it'd be in the high 20s. Is that way off normal?

if you are doing those kinds of averages on your own and not in a group, then you will have absolutely no problems;)
the spins are more for leisure than speed, although, some shenanigans have been known to go on, i.e first up a climb, bit of a sprint here and there, but for the most part, roughly the same averages as you have been managing.

No. you dont have to be a member to do this. but you do need to have a CI license. you can get a 1 day license on the day , I think they are €10

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,352 ✭✭✭rottenhat

Last communication I had from CI was that one day licenses for leisure events were going to be assessed at 10% of the entry fee. Prior to that it was a flat rate of €5.

So do I. But I am trying not to resent it given the fact that I have just applied for an annual CI licence for the first time.

I note that BW sat/sun require the same. Is this just a club decision or a requirement of some kind.
Cycling Ireland seem not to stipulate anything, insurance wise or other.

Am just wondering as obviously no legal requirement but seems a condition of any club activity they do, was thinking of joining the club but this would be one of the reasons against

(I know its a personal choice, don't want to get into the pro/con arguments, just why the club demands it)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,807 ✭✭✭g0g

Excuse the ignorance here please but what's the difference between a normal helmet and a hardshell? Surely any helmet needs a hard shell to be a helmet in the first place?

Oh and get well soon xz hope it wasn't too bad a crash

If it's a club requirement then there is nothing you can do. It's like "no jeans" on a golf course, you may not like it but if you want to be a member then you better slap on your plus-fours and quit moaning.

EDIT: (Not saying you are a moaner as such, I realise that sounds harsh, just that if one has an objection to a club rule, there is nothing to be done about it. Once you realise a helmet can become a fashion accessory, you will embrace it).

yeah, that's all I wanted to know. Its just one of the rules of the club, totally fair enough. I've no issue with that.

It IS a club rule that a helmet be worn on club spins,(the 10am leisure spin), and club organised randonees. The club also have spins for more serious riders involved in open racing which depart at 9:30. as far as I am aware, some of these riders, like you, will use their own discretion as to the wearing of a helmet, but most do. If you are planning on joining the club, with the intention of racing, you will find that the use of a helmet is compulsory for racing,so the wearing of it during training would appear to make sense, to get used to the feel of it whilst riding (without getting into pro/con side of things). you might find that most clubs nationwide would have a similar rule in place. To NOT join a club, based on the fact that they have a helmet rule in place seems petty.

I understand the some people prefer not to wear a helmet whilst training, but would wear a beanie etc. But for the purpose of Bray Wheelers Leisure spins, we prefer that you DO wear a helmet, as there are riders of varying fitness and skill levels, and crashes can,and do happen.

Bottom line, pros and cons aside, it's a Club rule;)

A normal helmet is a hardshell helmet. In previous times, leather helmets were available but they are no longer consider safe.

I did the other BW event at the end of last year without being a member of anything. You just needed to buy a one-day licence which was either € 5 or € 10 I think! Really looking forward to this on Sunday and might even bump into a few boardsies!

A lot of people are still waiting to receive this years licences. I will find out the exact position on this and get back with the details. As your introductory license has not been processed , you will more than likely have to get a 1 day license, which will be available at sign on. It is for your own and BW Insurance purposes that licences are required

New to all this,so sorry if my question is a bit thick..
1.Is the route signposted at every junction,or do I need to download the map and follow it??
    2.I'm not a CI member,so the 1 day license is €10,yes??
    Thanks

1.The route will be signposted, probably painted on road with a PM and arrow, I think there will be some marshalling at certain junctions too.

    2. yes

Good Luck to everyone taking part, looks like the weather is going to be OK until late afternoon, so everyone should get back dry(ish);).
I won't be there personally as I am currently injured, but was hoping to get out and help out on the day, but my better half has decided that Sunday is going to be shopping for re-decorating day:(.

First one back please leave some cake for everyone else :D;)

minutes late for start - 2 (not bad in my book)
total time spent cycling with group - 30 mins
    Number of punctures - 2
Vocal outbursts of rage - 1
    Wrong Turns - 1
    Moments of Depression - 1
muck accumulated - a bucket (metric)
    Cups of Coffee - 3
    Distance travelled - 219km / avg speed 37km/hr*
Steaks about to be consumed - 2 :D

*Clearly wrong but im going to print it out and show my future grandkids. Actual figure, 150ish km in 5hrs 50

Sorry i missed any other boardsies doing it. actually enjoyed it despite the hiccups... great turn out for it too. well done bray wheelers

Absolutely fantastic day out, well organised by Bray Wheelers from the start, with signs and markings on roads. Some of the best buns/cakes/sambos I have tasted both at the foodstop and back in the club house. Great route, good test of the legs in the early season, definitely tired now!!!! Weather held off, no rain all day. Great numbers out, met a couple of the boardies, gOg and Jimmy, nice to meet you out there, looking forward to seeing you at more Randonnes.:):)

Great day out today, really enjoyed it despite a couple of hills that nearly finished me off (these being the one after Avoca and the short but steep one before the Rathdrum food stop!). Nice to meet a few boards heads and will of course do the training log when I have more energy tomorrow! Thanks to the organisers for a job well done!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

Yeah, turned into a nice day out in the end. I spent 40 minutes sitting in the car shivering at the rain outside, but then the last shower hit around 9:45 and that was it for the day...sweet as. Though the promise of "sun splitting the rocks in the Glen", as a number of people were claiming, never panned out :)

Overall it was well organised, well signposted. Though I got the impression that not many went for the 100k. Only gripe I would have is as Jim mentioned to me; the main group seemed to burn off from the start like some kind of hard pushing club spin rather than a friendly event. We just happened to be at the back setting out and within 2km there was a sizeable gap between the main bunch and a second bunch at the back. Granted the bunch at the back weren't moving too quickly, but it the main group seemed to say, "right..seeya" and push off.
We pushed ahead of the slower bunch and caught up with the main bunch again before we came off the N11, but once we hit the hills, I took it easy, staying and chatting to a small group of slower riders and that was the last I saw of the main group.
Maybe it's my fault for hanging back :)

Feckin headwind was a bit of killer all the way down past Avoca but it came in dead handy coming out of roundwood, carried my tired legs a lot. Note for next year: bring lights. There was fairly thick fog around Glasnamullen; I would have been happier with a rear light, even a knog or something.

I missed the turn off the N11 at the end, ending up in Bray town and adding 5km to my total. D'oh.

Todays event with 187 riders was a fitting tribute to Paddy Martin.
