Can anyone give me some hinters please as I want to start to jog properly as a means of keeping fit and losing weight?
I constantly see people who are out running and it doesn't seem to take a breath out of them but when I try I can't go very far, I get a pain in my left lung and I feel dizzy and tingly in my left arm afterwards! Is it my breathing? Sorry if I sound stupid, thanks!

I went out running with a friend a couple of years ago. He'd never done any running/ much exercise in years. We were planning on a run that would take about 40 mins.

He started running too fast straight away, and was wrecked after 10mins. Lots of beginner runners do this. You may not do this exactly, but you may be changing your pace without realising it.

I'd recommend running on a treadmill to start with. It will get you to a certain level of fitness that you'll find running outdoors easier. Also, it will help you to focus on your breathing, as you won't have the cold air to work against

Well to the OP first of all the usual caveats about seeking medical advice if you feel like that.

I'm a graduate of the Couch to 5K - great programme, gradually builds up from a base of nothing really (1 minute runs alternating with 90 second walks). Can't recommend it highly enough http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

    Hello fifomania!

Firstly def go visit your gp and get a check up and ok to start! As for those runners you see who don't seem to lose a breath......the success of their running was painfully acquired....believe you me!!!! :) My advice which may be wrong but worked for me.....is this, and bare with it, cuz your bod is an amazing instrument with a wicked memory for being naturally fit and loving it!!!! Run for 1 minute and walk for 3 minutes for a total of 20 minutes to start...... (the walk is a march not a saunter!!!) I would do this over two weeks.....all the while you can increase the run and lesson the walk, listening to your body at what its comfortable doing.....you wanna be a little out of breath! I really think it takes atleast two weeks to train your body to run...... at first you will feel like you have concrete slabs strapped to your feet but after a while......you'll get lighter on your feet and that bliss of endorphins and life hassle release....running endless miles effortlessly will happen......always listen to your body.......always warm up your muscles and stetch after......hydrate yourself with plenty of water.....and my no 1 lesson.....buy asics if you are gonna jog/run regularly and especially if you are on the road!!! I love it....its free......and you feel so proud of yourself....as results are fast once its regular.....3-5 times a week!!! :) Then when you are comfortable running and if you want to join a running group.......there is a whole network out there.........where you won't find me!!!! lol I like the solitude of it.....:) I hope this helps and go for it..................:)
