Ed Westwick, has landed a significant supporting role in Clint Eastwood’s Hoover biopic “J. Edgar”. Westwick will play Agent Smith, a young operative with a knack for writing who Hoover (Leonardo DiCaprio) assigns to write his biography until he gets a little to close to the truth.
The casting on “J. Edgar” is firming up fast as Armie Hammer and Damon Herriman also recently jumped on board. One person not jumping on board, Deadline continues, is Charlize Theron, who had been rumored for the role of Helen Gandy, Hoover’s personal secretary. Eastwood is now pursuing Naomi Watts and Amy Adams as possible replacements.

Eastwood needs a decent flick after his last few releases, Hoover is a good subject for
a bio (I can only think of one other Larry Cohens rather off-beat "Private Files of..."

I think this thread needs a title chance, every time I see it I think Eastwood is making a film about hoovers.

    We have a trailer:

Leo ages well, doesn't he?

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Looks like a real Oscar pitch for DiCaprio.

The full cast on IMDB looks quite daring, with lesser-known stars e.g. Josh Lucas, Stephen Root, Dermot Mulroney - and Lea Thompson (Back To The Future), who still looks fabulous at 50. (50!)

I wonder will Clint Eastwood go Inglorious Bastards on this movie and have Leo's character killed off in the film. After all, what's a Leo DiCaprio movie without a death scene.;)

I don't like him in everything, but hes one of the greatest actors of our time.

I'm really surprised that this has been getting torn apart from critics.

It's been getting mixed-to-positive reviews from what I've been reading...

It was released widely in the USA on the 11th November. When's it getting general release here? I really want to see this film!

*EDIT: Just checked on RT and its 42% critics and 54% Audience

Just saw it. Pretty decent and some amazing performances in there. Don't know where all of the hate is coming from.

Saw this tonight - really enjoyed it I have to say! Leo gave a brilliant performance and having known next to nothing about Hoover before I went in I still found it very interesting, and it kept my attention for the whole 2 and half hours. Makes me want to read more about this Hoover guy :-D

I thought it was brilliant with two power house performances from Hammer and DiCaprio. It's over 2 hours long but the time flew by for me, I was just engrossed by the relationship between Clyde and J. Edgar.

I can't believe that it's generally getting panned!

Really liked this, great character study and period piece, very dramatic especially in the first hour or so and Di Caprio is very impressive, He gets better as he grows older, 4/5 stars.

    Seeing this tomorrow! Cannot wait!

Just after watching it and thought it was excellent. One of DiCaprio's best performances.

I didn't expect to enjoy it after a low rating on IMDB and a few dodgy reviews. I see most on this forum also enjoyed it - so what the hell do the critics know!

I suppose they could have made a more explosive movie with all the shít Hoover had on everyone, thus drawing out the story lines, but I preferred it this way. More character based on Hoover.

I'm not a fan of Di Caprio but I thought he was excellent in this film and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I wouldn't go by anything posted on the IMDB or written by film critics.

If The Eastwood picks something out of his garbage can like
decapri**** and sticks it in a film that's just okey dokey by me... ;)

    Hell, the legend is
82 this year. Even an icon can have his off days.

As I said on another thread, I was very underwhelmed by this. An okay film, but nothing special and I struggled to stay interested all the way through it. As in the case of The Iron Lady, the non-liner narrative doesn't work and I'm growing very tired of biopic films that use it. Just pick a 10-15 year period of the character's life and focus on that please. We don't need bookends or voice-overs or flashbacks or flash-forwards of them senile and hobbling around on a cane. The only film I can think of that used this type of flashback structure effectively was Nixon and that was modelled closely on Citizen Kane. I quite like Eastwood as a director, but I think he was working outside of his strengths on this film.

But he's too tall for the part

Hoover was only about 5' 4" max...maybe i'm nit picking but i think its a glaring error
