psyllium husks = evil

Lads - on the advice of a few here I bought psyllium husks a while back.

The first session I took with them I noticed within a day or two it started having the complete opposite to the desired effect on me. It seemed to be robbing me of all hydration and I started to fear using the loo !

A few days back I used it in a recipe or two, not much mind but a sprinkling in order to bulk up some burgers actually and I used it to thicken up a soup that got away from me.

Again - despite my drinking 3 litres of water as usual I'm in a bad way. It's literally made me afraid of my own poo ! :o

Anyone else find anything similar ?

    Any quick remedies ?

    Ta Rob

What desired effect were you hoping for can I ask? They are used for colon cleansing as well as a thickener in foods. You do need to keep well hydrated while having them though. I've had them myself before and felt fine, they did change certain things ;) but had no ill effect on how I felt and didn't affect my hydration either.

I was expecting them to act like any "bulking" agent in your colon and carry more water in what I "get rid of" same as porridge or bran would.
Instead I seem to be very much lacking in water in that area if you get me. "Sh1tting bricks" is the phrase I think !

You need to take them with a LOT of water. In fact, one of the commercial brands of psyllium husk on sale is a little sachet that you mix with a half pint of water and drink.

thanks - but I drink 3 litres of water per day, shouldn't that cover it ?
I haven't taken it in any real quantities just as a filler to burgers etc. but it's the second time I;ve used it and the same result both times.
I've taken Fybrogel and its been fantastic so I don't know what's going on.

Fybrogel is psylium husk taken in water. If you are adding it dry to food, you have to drink extra water to accompany it.

I take 2 teaspoons of psyllium husks (the actual husks not the capsules) stirred in to a large glass of orange juice every morning and find it fantastic. I drink a normal amount of water each day (about 1 litre) and have no probs at all. It is also really good at keeping bad cholesterol levels down - my doc actually recommended it to me for that reason rather than having to take a pill for the rest of my life.

I take 2 tsps of Lepicol (which is p.h mixed with probiotics) each evening knocked back with a pint of water. No probs with it.
