Just wondering what peoples thoughts on this are.
we are trying to recruit new staff and getting plenty of applicants but when we call them for interview they dont even bother coming or calling to say they wont come. We think that some of them are just using the application alone to continue getting the dole. really really pissing me off at the mo..... what ye think....

To get the dole you have to show you've applied for a certain amount of jobs

But they're potential bar stewards...........not even lazy bar stewards. By your accounts they're just lazy people.

This thread has taken a dark turn very fast my friend. I'm not sure I like where this is going.

is this speaking from experience? So when I signed on, they asked me to show them proof that I had applied for jobs for the laugh?

Yes it is from experience, not once have I been asked for proof of applying for work, but if you have then fine, maybe it depends on some factor like area or something.

Will I send you my C.V.?

i dont know that they are doing this for certain but it is just unbelieveable that they dont even call to say not coming. wasting time for me , admin staff and possibly someone who actually might want the job losing out on an interview....

There's plenty of jobs out there, but the dole scum are too comfortable.

Hopefully future budgets will rectify this, but I doubt it will.

Hang on, did you call the people yesterday, and expect them to turn up yesterday? Did four of the people confirm they were showing up? How long have you had the CVs before calling them?

no interviews booked last thursday. confirmation email sent after talking to them on the phone. with directions to the office, multiple contact numbers and a request to advise us of any changes with the arrangements.... but no, nothing... . and this isnt the first time it has happened... really strange

    Wow!

I'm one of the dole scum. I'd rather not be, but hey, such is life. I left school in '83, and this is the first time I've ever been unemployed (for more than four weeks).

Dole scum may have been a bit harsh. Riff raff might be more appropriate.

I was on the dole and riff raff myself for a few months after college, but I pulled myself back into normal society once I got a job.

because they know that people in HR are just back stabbing bastards who use the very people they should be taking care of just to further their own careers

Christ almighty. Mods get the finger out. A large number of people on boards are in the position of being on the dole and don't need this kind of abuse.

I'll be the third poster to ask what the pay is. So what is it?

Better be more then minimum wage and possibly health insurance included if it's full time.
Staff won't work for bad terms

Define Dole scum in 15 words or less.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 127 ✭✭Wedgie

    I'd work for minimum wage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18 starsat

ok so a few more details. I am not in HR. I own the company, We are still looking for staff, Pm me if you want more details. and i'm not having a go at people on the dole, my original statement still stands that we wonder why you wouldn't show up for an interview if you were genuinely looking for a job or why bother your arse applying in the first place....

    The problem with Irish workers.

We are not in a race to the bottom. I was the third to ask what the pay was, not the first

Nothing wrong with seeking the best terms. I worked one bar job for minimum wage and once I had experience I aimed for something better and more pay.

Why oh why is seeking more the minimum wage and perks like health insurance a problem that Irish workers have? Lots of companies pay health insurance, even for low paid staff

If the OP cannot attract good candidates then the solution is give better terms and attract better candidates.

they don't even know what the pay is at the stage when they don't show, so it ain't that

ya, well unless they asked along the way at some point. It's a bit of an odd one alright. but there's a chance they got other offers, or something important came up *and* didn't have time to ring.

They'll assume minimum wage unless you specify higher.

If you're paying a good wage then put this in your next ad

No because i handle it myself so money is never discussed in a first contact call... maybe after the first interview.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 536 ✭✭✭nosietoes

To be fair, anyone who hasn't the good grace to ring to cancel an appointment shouldn't be getting a job anyway. It really doesn't show respect, or any sort of work ethic.

But I do know what you're talking about. I work in a restaurant, and often over the past couple of years we've attempted to recruit Kitchen Porters who are payed minumum wage or a little above (not sure of exact pay packet). No, they don't get health insurance or anything like that - its the catering industry, not even head chefs get that kind of perks in most places!

The amount of times that people who claim to desperately want a job, and then who don't show up astounds me!

Fair enough. I was just thinking there though, I wouldn't apply for bar jobs, as it's one industry that is really struggling and so what's the point setting yourself up for a new job when it might be gone in a month..? ya i dunno, just trying to think...
