I've had enough of the Frontline to be honest.
Its a socialist programme full of selfish people only interested in "me" "me "me".
Too many vested interests in the audience and always the poor mouth .

Mary Hanafin is on as well. She's being too big of a coward to say who she is voting for in the confidence to vote for.

On the eve of a leadership vote of Fianna Fail, RTE have decieded to focus on one single Dublin constituency out of 43.

The cowardly Greens it appears will support a new FF leader, at least Cuffe did not deny it.

Dear god, that wimp Barry Andrews, Mary Hanafin, Cuffe.. and the two champagne socialists appropriately enough on the left of the stage... I think I'd just burn the voting card if I lived in Dun Laoghaire..

That argument that Andrews was spouting out about FG / Labour not agreeing on policy is a ridiculous argument.. Fianna Fáil didnt have policies that were completely in sync with the Greens, or with the independents.. yet they still formed a government.

Loved Hanafin looking at Cuffe whilst he spoke like she was observing a dog sh1te in the park... disgusted.

Could be Dun Laoghaire, could be anywhere - its all jockeying for position in the local bull ring that is Irish politics.

See and there you go, some local saying "I'll be voting for the individual, not the party" Christ. At the same time another side of me says who can blame him, the parties themselves are so hopeless, the few useful members they have must shine like diamonds in the rough.

FFS its all about fecking local issues. That is what is wrong with this country, idiots voting for national reps based on local bloody issues!!!!!

there you have irish voting in a nutshell - "I will be voting for mary because I dont want to lose her" - says the well-off older lady, who is probably her neighbour.

Yeah, I dont think his Junior Ministry will be of any use, as people will assume that FF will be in opposition and he will lose that Junior Ministry. Even though Hanafin is also gonna lose her (senior) Ministry, I think there is much more support for her on the ground...

I cant imagine Cuffe even having a snowball's chance... He's a very stern looking guy. He should borrow a couple of smiles from Eamonn Ryan (who smiles waaaaay too much)..

some of the clowns in the audience added to the clowns on the panel do not know where they are let alone which century it is. The whole programme comes across as very very staged to me.

I've been on The Frontline and yes quite a few members of the audience are invited and planted by RTE. When I was there you could see the producers and researchers consulting with some of the people in the audience.

At least I got to call Blair Horan a traitor on live TV :)

I have been on the Frontline about 4-5 times. Yeah, they bring in invited guests who are relevant to the discussion. But anyone can ask a question. To say its 'staged' is completely wrong.

    Who?

General Secretary, Civil Public & Services Union.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,718 ✭✭✭✭JonathanAnon

What really baffles me is why there is all the talk about the "knowledge economy" and free third level fees... A huge percentage of people are now going to college to do courses that have no practical use in Irish industry.. When they are finished, there are nowhere near enough suitable jobs in Ireland for them all to have one in their area of interest... so the taxpayer pays for their course and they end up having to leave the country to get a job... Everybody loses...

The Government really should be focusing on indigenous industry, teaching people practical skills to build up sustainable export businesses.. And also focusing on maximizing our potential in tourism.. And treat FDI for what it is, temporary and unsustainable... Certainly maximize what we can get out of it, but dont start sending everybody on 3rd level courses in Computer Apps because the head of Intel says so....

It is partially staged. Yes they do go to the general audience as well but they have their planted audience members as well and their is a lot of consultation going on before the show kicks off.

These 'planted' audience members are really just minor panel members. Like they might have a economics professor in the audience on a discussion about the budget for example. But they always give out their names and profession on the screen.

No before it. Around the time all the union leaders were throwing a wobbly over the 2010 budget.

I think I will stick with Vincent Browne instead of this show, stilted and staged, just like the dire show it replaced, Q&A, the only difference is Kenny on walkabout and not nearly as condescending and arrogant as Bowman.

I would have serious reservations about Barry Andrews and his attitude towards the Catholic Church during the clerical abuse scandal, and he the Minister for Children. It smacks to me of Opus Dei or the Knights of Columbanus.

but Bowman wasn't getting paid €600,000 to pontificate about TDs' salaries ;)

I think the format of Frontline doesn't work.
Any program with an audience like Frontline won't work because hacks from all parties infiltrate and the viewer gets mostly skewed party speeches.
From the FF aul'wan in the purple scarf (floating voter my arse) to PBP's plant to the load of people who must have been bussed in to support the unbelivably inane FG second candidate (she got two or three rounds of applause for, well absolute drivel)

And I think it puts to rest the argument some on here put forward that the parish is only pumped down the country.

Going on the calibre of candidate on show last night (Mitchell O Connor, the second FG one) and the spectacle raised in Donegal SW last December by Labour and FG's candidates - it ain't looking good.
That's not to mention the spectacularly crap incumbents from FF.

I'm hoping more like Ross and Mathews go forward and the country can at the very least have a few intelligent, independent voices in the next Dail.

    Temproary and unsustainable eh?

    Computers Apps eh?

By and large, the people working in Irelands IT industry and one of a small number of groups who did not get carried away with the Celtic Tiger. The global dot com bust caused the industry to reasses itself. As a consequence, IT workers did not earn stupid uncontrollable and unsustainable salaries from 2001 onwards. From personal experience, the vast majority of IT workers rent their accomandation because they could not afford to buy during the boom.

Its also worth noting that these "Computer App" courses had their CAO points collapse through the noughties. This is because it was seen as unattractive and not much money. People were better off doing law, or civil eng, or architecture.

Ironically, while not much has changed in the industry over the last couple of years, from a job security perspective, we are now seen as being in one of the more secure industries, both home grown and from FDI.

What the head of Intel is saying is he wants to stay in Ireland. But because of a period of greed, the concept of someone earning only around 20K after graduating from college impacted the quality of IT graduates in this country.

Hopefully kids in school, who have good maths skills, good logic and an intererst in Software Engineering, Configuration Management, trouble shooting etc etc, and would consider 20K as a 21 year old graduate, and good start, might now consider doing a course in 'Computer Apps'.

Some of these may work for home grown industries. Most will probably work for large multi nationals. Most will continue to educate themselves throughout their working lives.

I watched the show and thought that Sean Barrett of FG impressed most but I didn't think much of his running mate.

As far as I know it's a three seater which could end up Barrett, Backik (Labour) and Boyd Barrett (Independent)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

Dun Laoghaire is currently a five seater and will be a four seater at the next election.

    The Sitting TD's are
    Mr. Barry Andrews
    Mr. Sean Barrett
    Mr. Ciaran Cuffe
    Mr. Eamon Gilmore
    Ms. Mary Hanafin

The ones in bold should get voted in. I would say that Cuffe is a definite to go, maybe along with Andrews. And they will be replaced by a either Backik and Boyd Barrett or both of them.

I agree with you the second FG candidate did not give me any confidence that she will be voted in.

It's a four seater, down from five. The incumbents are Gilmore (Labour leader), Barrett (ex cabinet minster), Hanafin (cabinet minister), Cuffe (Min of state) and Andrews ( min of state).

Gilmore and Barrett are safe. Barrett was by far the most impressive yesterday. Where have FG been hiding him?

Backic could get in on Gilmore's transfers. Hanafin is liked and will I reckon get in, depends how many transfers she gets from Andrews though. Boyd Barrett will depend on how many transfers he can get from the looney left. He came accross as a bit of a fool last night, being a councillor seems more conducive to his rabble rousing style of politics. Cuffe and Andrews are dead ducks.

If McWilliams throws his hat in...who knows

I wish I was still registered there, Andrews is right, its the group of death!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 171 ✭✭outandabout

As its a four seater in the next election it could end up Gilmore (Labour)Barrett (FG) Bacic (Labour) and Boyd Barrett (Independent)

Gilmore should top the poll and his transfers could bring in a second Labour seat. Boyd Barrett could get the last seat as he'll get transfers from across the constituency.

Seems to be a bit of tension in FF over Hanafin and Barry Andrews both running in a constituency where the best they can do is win one seat.

To get back to the original post, credit to Pat Kenny who for for all his other faillings is excellent on current affairs shows like The Frontline.

Hi Colm, you seemed to have picked me up as targetting the IT sector which is not what I was doing.. I've worked in different IT jobs over the years also, so I'm aware of the situation...

My point is that I am against building up towns and industry around huge multinationals like Dell, cos when they inevitably move to cheaper labour markets, they take the heart of the town with them..

I fear that something similar will happen in Leixlip.. I know from a friend that HP have moved some lines East, so I'm not sure if they are about to do similar...
What the head of Intel is saying is he wants to stay in Ireland. But because of a period of greed, the concept of someone earning only around 20K after graduating from college impacted the quality of IT graduates in this country.

Intel have qualified their investment last week by saying that it will be dependent on our Corporation Tax staying at 12.5%, which Europe is certainly gonna push for us increase now that they have us over a barrel. So I would see that as more of an conditional investment. I heard the ex head of Intel saying at a conference last year that of the thirteen reasons that Intel moved to Ireland there was only one left.. (i.e. the Corporation Tax).

These are IT companies that I have spoken of, but the same applies to the pharmaceutical other sectors.. The whole model of the Irish Government agencies bending over backwards for foreign companies, yet doing nothing to help indigenous industry, is wrong imo. It seems to be more about civil servants earning gold stars by bringing in these blue ribbon companies, rather than actually look for sustainable employment for Irish people.

    Mr Barry Andrews

Mary O'rourke was on with Pat Kenny this morning and said that Barry "has got his Mojo back"...:confused:. I think he is the least convincing politician I've ever seen.. No conviction or passion, he could be talking about Home And Away for all the seems to care..
