Who owns their car?

Following from another thread, who actually owns their car as opposed to drive it on the drip, company car, hire purchase, cash loans and all that stuff.

Who actually put their own cash on the table and owes nobody?

Personally I have 4 cars and own them all outright. OH owns hers too.

Mine all mine, every one so far. Not hard when it's mainly bangernomics tho!
There's gonna be less and less loans - I see loads of houses in my estate that used to have newish Volvo S60,S80, BMW 3series, Audi A4 A6 etc.
Now they have 90odd year Corsa's, Clios, Golfs...

Edit - it being Limerick, I have seen the odd horse trot in when the cousins call to the crowd down the way...

I own mine. The previous owner of the car had it repossessed though.

We only have the one car at the moment and paid cash money for it.

Apart from my mortgage I've never had a loan or owed a penny to anyone. Going to try and keep it that way fingers crossed, particularly on an asset that depreciates as quickly as a new/newish car.

But each to their own, I can fully understand why someone would do it on a loan or HP, as long as they have the means to repay it.

Technically, I reckon a lot of posters here are ruled out due to the fact that they don't actually own their car. Or at least if they stopped paying for it they wouldn't be in posession of it for very long.
 Ive met a few motors regulars and even then I wouldnt have a clue about the financial circumstances in which they came to possess their cars.... how you assume this from posts...... baffles me! I own mine if your curious though.

lol!! early days yet, good thread!

    I own mine.

In fairness though I think anyone spending fairly big money on a car over the last 5 - 6 years should have a car loan/personal loan (hopefully one that's nearly paid off though!). The APR rates were so ridiculously low that you could borrow at a very low cost of credit. These days are gone now with APR being up around 12%. It just didn't make sense to fork out big money on a car when the cost of credit was so low. Oh for the good ole days!

Bf is the same, took longer to clarify that it was clear of any finance than any other aspect of the purchase.

I also own my own car, but that said it's a ten year old Alfa, that I've had 2.5 years, wouldn't want any finance outstanding. I've always tended to have cheap cars for that reason, if/when the day comes that I can afford a fancy car straight out then hopefully I'll get it :)

My simple rule - If you cant afford to pay cash for a car then buy a cheeper one or keep the one you have. Car loans are a dreadfull waste of cash.

Instead of paying a loan you should put the money into a high interest account and earn interest instead of paying it. You could be 600 quid better off.

    Own My car
Bought my first car, paid it off in two years....drove it until it was almost dead.....scrapped it last May (sadly...) and got a 10 Reg...had saved for last 6 years of my old car so bought it outright......will have it until it bites the dust too !!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,160 ✭✭✭✭L1011

I own a wreck of a Pug I intend to restore and I could cover the balance on the unsecured loan I bought the other one with with my credit card if I had to (expensively!) prove a point.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,423 ✭✭✭pburns

Only got a loan for my first car. Own 2 now.
The older one was a bad buy though, a Navara bought before all the builders went bust and started giving them away.

There was a guy on here a couple of years ago who used to chop in M3s and Porsches every few months cos he grew 'bored' with them, all on the drip...

Always always always owned my own cars, would,nt give those f***ing banks and finance companies the exhorbitant interest they wanted, nor the garages their massive hourly servicing rates.I service my car and my wifes car and my motorcycles myself- because i love mechanical things -and educated myself to do so.
I read about guys moaning about not being able to tax their 08 or 09 BMW because next months payment is due on their loan.It would never cross their silly little minds to live within their means and buy a small affordable car.
This is the attitude that f***ed up this country. It pisses me off that while I owe no institution or individual anything I now have to pay through my taxes for the instant infantile gratification of the idiots who don,t own their own cars.
The only upside is I can buy their repossesions for peanuts-cash on the nail!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,412 ✭✭✭andyseadog

i once took out a small personal loan to buy a car. after a year i saved like a man possessed to pay it off early.

never EVER again will i be getting into finance over a car. if i cant afford it from my savings, im not having it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,156 ✭✭✭Iwannahurl

    Paid cash for the car.

Got the impression that the sales guy was mainly interested in selling me car finance and that he got a bit bored when I turned out to be a cash buyer.

No doubt, in fairness to him though, he quite likely was under pressure to make his cash off the finance too, mouths to feed and all that.

    Perhaps.

They had a yard full of unsold cars at the time, vast majority of which I could not afford. They went bust soon after, a victim of the Celtic Casino wipe-out.

20cyl between 2 cars here! :P 25 with the Alfa added to the mix.
Technically all paid for and not on finance or anything, but I have so many other financial "commitments" I fear I may be hunted down by Banks at any moment regardless! :P

I did take out a loan for a car once (though not a car loan), never again!

yeah - but don't you have to be uber careful with them? Mate of mine does the same in the UK but he's always worried about it. The idea of chucking it back after 2 years is appealing however.

But I prefer to own my own.

Don't have to be too careful. Insurance has an excess of 125 I think, and its fully comp.

But if you hand the car back with damage, then its 125 per side for repairs.
So basically I get everything repaired the month before handing back, keep all nicks till the end and claim once - pay the excess and Bob's yer uncle.

Its really handy. Tyres, oil, maintainable all included. 15000km per year mileage. Drive less, get money back, drive more, pay more.

I love not having to give a shit about the car to be honest. I can then treat it like the impersonal consumer good it is.
