Claiming medical expenses/MED1 online?

    hi all,

Just noticed that it looks like you can now claim back for medical expenses online (through the PAYE anytime website).

I've never done a MED1 before, so just wondering if all I have to do is tot up the expenses for the year, deduct any money already received from VHI & then put the balance as the gross cost figure for each year?

Is there any way of getting all my prescription costs per year - I didn't always use same chemist, and didn't keep the receipts :o

Yep, that's pretty much it, tot up your expenses, minus anything you've recieved from VHI, there is also a €125 excess on the MED1, so anything you are entitled to will be minus this amount (€250 if claiming for couple or family). Routine dentistry is not eligable, but doctor, hospital, physio etc are covered as is prescriptions. You don't actually have to send in the receipts, just have them in case your case is chosen for examination, you have to keep them for 6 years. My husband is very bad for keeping receipts, but my chemist just did a print out for us. I'm sure whatever chemist you used would have a record and could reprint you a receipt. Just don't expect them to be happy about it as I'm sure they get asked loads this time of year :D.

I have always received payment within 4-6 weeks and you can now get it by cheque or directly lodged to your account.

There hasn't been any kind of an excess for Medical expenses since 2006. Claims for 2007 and later years are unrestricted.

Whoops, sorry about that, I was looking at an old form I filled out and never noticed that bit was missing off the new form :o

Do they often check this as am slightly estimating ours? Also I get the first thirty of visits back so do I just count the next twenty in this form?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,678 ✭✭✭nompere

They do check, quite regularly. Most practitioners would reckon that of all the claims that get checked, Medical expenses claims are at the top of the list. If they check, and you don't have paper to back up the claim, they will be cross. It's not worth making an unsupportable claim.

The claim is only for expenses that haven't been reimbursed. So add up what you've paid, take away what you've got back, and claim the difference.

I was at the doctor in total 4 times last year spending €220 in consultation fees. Would it be worth my while filling out a Med1 for for this? Would I be entitled to a some sort of a refund?

    Thanks

It would be worth 44 euro assuming you paid tax last year.

Yes, tax paid is the issue to watch for. I retired in June 2010. I have 3 long term illnesses and am on a lot of medication. My Med 1 claim for 2010 was €1,900 BUT as I only worked 6 Months of the Year, I was not allowed a rebate. I didn't have an issue with it, but I didn't see it coming.

Hi, just filling out my MED1 and noticed they accept receipts for prescribed drugs?! is this a new thing? I don't ever remember being able to submit receipts of prescribed drugs...
I have never kept receipts from chemists as I thought you were only covered under the drug payment scheme and you'd need to be paying over 80somthing euro a month for that!!

I am an asthmatic and would often get medication from the chemist. Does this mean I can to my local chemist and ask them for a receipt for every single purchase made in the last x years and then submit with this years form??

am I covered for this type of medication and if so, how long can I go back with my claims?

    Thanks in advance... C

Hi Kormak, always ask for medical receipts. Drug or Doctor or Hospital. You can claim Tax relief on all medical payments. You submit your claim at the start of the year, for the previous years expenses. They ask you NOT to submit the receipts but hold them for any future inspection of them. It does NOT cover anything obtained on a medical card. Submit all of your medical receipts and allow Revenue to decide which qualify and which do not qualify. Dont forget eye tests and dental work paid for by you.

Just so I'm reading this right, even if I'm paying 144 a month for drug payment scheme, I can submit thus as a medical expense??

I've never done this. Always thought it was only doctors receipts. If true I am a dummy...

Would revenue entertain me trying to claim this back for the last 5 years??

And this is why having a taxation forum is a dangerous thing - it says ON THE FORM:
    "Expenses that do not qualify:
The cost of sight testing and the provision and maintenance of spectacles and contact lenses.
Routine dental treatment which is defined as “the extraction, scaling and filling of teeth and the provision and repair of artificial teeth and dentures”."

Look at the Med 1 form (google it, the pdf is there) - Line (b) is called "Total outlay on prescribed drugs or medicines for the year" - that can't really be much clearer. Why it says "total outlay" is because you can only claim for the amount you've actually paid, so the amount in excess of the 144 p.m. (or whatever the limit was in each year) that you didn't actually have to pay, can't be counted.

You can claim as far back as 2009 now.

Bear in mind that the drug payment scheme was €132 in 2012, so you can claim based on those figures. So if you paid €132 every month, you put €1584 into the prescription medicines box (12 x €132) You do not need to submit receipts, but you need to have receipts for everything in case they are requested.

Thanks! honestly whatever way this was worded before, made me think you could NOT apply for relief on prescribed drugs.
It seems pretty clear here you can >

ps. There's no mention anywhere of types of illnesses covered, can someone link this?

Also, If I submit my med1 form for 2012, can I also include the last 4 years of prescribed medicine receipts which I intend to pickup from my chemsit?

Finally, I'm aware of the dental part and what is and is not covered. Thanks again.

I successfully claimed 3 years (2009.2010,2011) back about 6 months ago.
I am trying to claim my expenses for 2012 but am getting an error about dsp ilness benefit needs to be updated or something like that?

Do I need to wait until my employer issues my p60 before I can claim for 2012?
I had a lot of hospital/GP visits last year.

    Cheers
    Sham.

If you are getting an error that the DSP payments need to be updated then call revenue. They will update your DSP payments online. You can also ask if your pay and tax details are on file yet for 2012. If they are then work away. If not, wait for your p60.

Ok, got a reply back but not sure what they are asking?

Last time I applied , I just filled in the expenses (online), a couple of days later I got the money?

"I have updated DSP details for 2012 please state if this payment was already taxed by your employer"

As you received a DSP payment (probably illness benefit), they want to know if your employer already taxed you on it as you do not want to end up getting taxed twice on the same amount. As your payroll how they handled it and let Revenue know.

DSP payments complicate normally straightforward claims.

    Hi there,
Does anyone know if you get a lump sum or if its given back to you in credits? I sent mine in about 4 weeks ago and have heard nothing!?
    Thank you!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 99 ✭✭Sidetracker

Hi Muffles. The norm is that you get a cheque for the full amount due, however, if there is tax outstanding to revenue for the Year claimed, they will offset it against your claim. You claim for ANY payments made for ANY medical issue whatever. As I said before, submit ALL receipt values and Revenue will throw out any that are not eligible. Keep your actual receipts safe for six (6) years. Dont forget to review all of your Tax payments and entitlements for the last four (4) years. Your domestic rubbish costs and, if like me , you are a senior, your age allowance and reduced PRSI levy.

But as u can go back 4 years still worth looking at the missed years.

Is there a huge back log?

Med 1 submitted online mid jan and no word since. Was much quicker last year.

If all was in order and the application was made via paye anytime then a p21 balancing statement would've issued to your paye anytime inbox within 48 hours. Any refunds due would have issued within 3 working days as its an automated system.

Did you check your paye anytime inbox? If there's nothing then I suggest you contact Revenue via phone or email to check what's going on.

I got mine after 3 days.
I submitted for 471 euro medical expenses and only got 64 euro back?
I was expecting around 92 or so?
I assume I was taxed on some of it.
When I look at the balancing statement it shows the 64 as overpayment in tax
I assumed the medical expenses would show up as something different.
Greedy me was thinking I was getting the 64 plus the 92 for meds but no sign of any other payment.

Ah its better than a kick in the arse as they say..

Maybe you were taxed incorrectly in work or something during the year. Probably best to ring and ask.

For those still waiting, sometimes it takes a bit longer for no apparent reason! I had waited 8 working days for my tax back so I phoned them. The woman said she could see the claim and that she would send an email to someone. I was thinking maybe they were going to investigate it because my medical expenses are very high every year, but I had the money in my account 2 days later.

Apparently its taking 3-4 weeks to deal with claims. I couldn't get through to an operator. I had to wait 10 mins but that was the constant message on the machine! Does anyone know do I get a refund if I am not working but my husband is? I sent our claim in together? I looked up on my PAYE anytime and its says im due 484 but will that be as tax credits?

Hi Shame69, you shouldn't have been taxed on any of your rebate, as you already paid tax on it before you paid for your medication.

Just a general note on online claims versus paper based claims.
Paper based med1 claims can take up to 8 weeks to be input at this time of year depending on what the demands are on the particular office dealing with your claim.
Inputting the claim is only one step as a portion of all claims both paper based and online are double checked.
The claims which are selected for verification checks can add days or weeks to the process depending again on staff resources.

Online claims through paye anytime are processed automatically without any staff intervention. If they pass through the inbuilt security checks then a p21 balancing statement should issue with 48 hours of input. Any refund due should issue within 3 working days if you input your bank details.
Like the above paper based claims a portion are selected for double checking which will increase the length of time for any refund to issue.

Hi there, may aswell post my recent experience... claimed back through MED1 for 2012 also without any issues... lodged into my account only weeks later.

In addition, someone elses money had also been lodged into my account by Revenue in error with thier PPS number used as the reference.

I am shocked, especially since when I rang to tell them they said it had nothing to do with them and when I called a second time the admitted the mistake was theirs.

Now I have to return this cash which is fine however, they suggested a bank draft to me and when I contacted my bank I realised that it would cost me to organise this. So this week I will have to make another arrangement.... which involves me spending my lunch hour in a queue.

Not happy and its hardly reassuring.

    Hi All,

I am looking at filling in my MED1 form online. They mention that "physiotherapy or similar treatment prescribed by a practitioner" is covered. Does this mean I must have been referred by a GP, or just a qualified/chartered physio?

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭Citizenpain

Allowed if - the expenses are incurred on referral from a doctor or other qualifying practitioner)

    From Revenue.ie
    What does 'Practitioner' mean?
Practitioner means any person who is:

registered in the register established under section 43 of the Medical Practitioners Act 2007

Thanks for the quick reply. I have looked at section 43 and cant make any sense of it. I dont know if a physio is part of this register, or qualifies as a 'practitioner'. Has anyone made any claims for physio treatment without a doctors referral?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭Citizenpain

I'm sure people have - but without the referral it would be a fraudulent claim

I assume you can check here if ia person is registered

Ok, that answers my question. A chartered/registered physio is not enough. Referral from doctor is necessary. I wasnt sure if a physio fell under the practitioner category. Thanks for your help

This might sound like a silly question but im just looking for some clarity. When claiming medical expenses online, do you fill in the entire amount paid or 20% of this amount?

For example if i have a receipt for €1,000, do i fill in €1,000 or €200?

This is probably very straight forward and i'm sure i'm over thinking the whole thing.

    Hi all,

I got a serious sporting injury last year (was working up to that point) and required surgery. I have been off work since and I am wondering about claiming tax back? It will be quite a bit going of the 20% guidelines, the reason I didn't try to claim it back yet is that my medical expenses are still occurring (physio, mri etc.)

I have been on injury benefit since and I am wondering will this effect on the amount I can claim back as I am not earning at the moment? I will be returning to work in a couple of months but the extra money would be useful right now.

    Thanks for any help

I have dental expenses this year that cost me 3200 but I haven't paid tax the last few years due to being in Australia.
My question is can I make a claim on these expenses from my last tax paying year which was 2012.
My dental treatment is ongoing and will continue through this year if this information helps.
    Thank you

No. You can only claim when you paid the expense. So if you paid the expense in 2014 and paid no tax in 2014 then you won't be able to claim relief for the 2014 expenses.

Illness benefit is taxable so depending on your income and tax paid during 2014, it may affect your 2014 claim.

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Technically the bill was paid on my behalf by a family member so from another thread it claims that I should be able to claim it all back (20%)
