Serious debate, one punishment for all crimes...would it work?

Namely death, and i mean for ALL crimes, no matter how minor. If it's written in law.....imo, short term it would have a major impact, but it wouldn't totally eliminate crime.

Maybe 80-90% reduction, you'd still have crimes of passion, stupidity etc.
If i had such power to do i implement such a policy, global scale.

I'm not opposed to the death penalty, but death for every single crime, I can't quite imagine that being enacted. You know, short of one of those creepy "eutopias" in movies. And it'd never work for them in the end..

Not for all crimes, but definitely bring back corporal punishment. Death penalty for anyone convicted of manslaughter/murder/rape. Those convicted of robberies/burglaries/thefts should have fingers/hands cut off. Public Order offences should result in bans on drinking.

Well something needs to be done, prison DOES NOT work!!...it's basic human instinct to want to live, ergo such a policy would kicked people into gear + i'd teach every child from a very young age to know the laws and not break them.

Death for all crimes? Not sure it would work, if you are going to commit the smallest of crimes and not risk getting caught you might as well go the whole hog and get away with as much as possible.

Yeah...and people wouldn't steal mars bars no more. theft is a crime, no matter if it's a mars bar or a car or whatever.

Kind of encourages people to up the ante while doing crime. If you commit a crime, you may as well kill any potential witnesses etc, even if it's not that serious a crime in the grand scheme of things cos if your caught the punishment is the same whether you leave witnesses or kill them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,323 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

Yeah...and people wouldn't steal mars bars no more. theft is a crime, no matter if it's a mars bar or a car or whatever.

You're not only trolling but you're naive!

do you think murder ceases to exist in places where the Death Penaltiy exists?

lol what about that old guy that got sent to prison for not having a dog license awhile back. can you imagine telling an 80 year old man hes been given the death penalty for not having a dog license, I think he would drop dead on the spot :D

so have you ever (accidentally or on purpose) done anything illegal? ever not stop completely at a stop sign, go 51km/hr in a 50 zone, ever accidentally walk out of a shop without paying for something, ever blaspheme (against the new law), ever work a ob cash in hand?

If it was implemented, everyone except new born babies would prb have to be killed. get real.

The US has a good example; life expectancy in a gang; 4 years, life expectancy on death row; 7 years.

For the record Im against the death penalty.

You must be a barell of laughs at dinner parties

I'm all for punishing crime harshly

but seriously...death for everything...no such thing as mitigating circumstances?

would you pull the trigger/ release the trapdoor/push the button yourself?

what about when someone gets convicted in the wrong, would this just be an unfortunate but unavoidable consequence of such a system to you?

I would say harsher mandatory punishments if proven guilty of certain crimes would help, banning of the word concurrent and making prison a genuinely uncomfortable place for all its inmates (physical labour etc - not being threatened with HIV needle by Anto) would go a long way

but death for absolutely everything? No, not for me, thats a bit too far.

    Talk about a dystopia
    "jaywalking? death for you"
"downloaded a song? death for you"

"hogging the overtaking lane? death for you"
Well actually I might agree with the last one :D

But it's not done correctly, in the US the death penalty can stretch out for upto ten years before execution. My plan?....upon conviction you're taken outside and publically executed...shown live on tv.

This way the prison system will no longer be nesscary, the money saved put into police, courts and crime preventation.

    Would you like to elaborate?

I pro death penalty, as it would certainly decrease crime, IMO. Fear is an excellent motivator, and it's the lack of it is why this country is going to sheit.

Stats showed that it increased costs to the state and did not deter crime in the states
    So...

Personally I don't think we should kill people to show that killing people is wrong

Petty crime hasn't really affected me much. Lots of things that were legal have completely ruined my life, namely the political and banking systems.

People are so paranoid about crime it's ridiculous.

I agree that some people deserve to die for their crimes but because of the chance that an innocent person could be put to death Im against the death penalty. Its not worth that risk to me.

    Yeah, because that's the problem.

"Should I kill this guy? Hmmm.... they'll execute me for it, but heck, i'll have a good 7 years living on bread and water and having nothing to do all day but stare at a wall. Let's get killing!"

You must be winding people up. We don't even have a high crime rate. Countries with severe punishments for crimes have endemic human rights abuses, which are worse for the general public than if the crime rate was high.

Jesus, lad, how old are you? There's so much wrong with this I don't know where to start.

What would happen if someone got convicted of something but was later discovered to be innocent? This happens a lot more than you think-- do you really think it's worth murdering innocent people for that?

It would require a complete revamp of law to be practical in any way. How can you honestly say that in countries where it's against the law to jaywalk or smoke marijuana or litter that they should be put to death? I mean, come on! Have you any idea the magnitude of what it is you're suggesting?

I'm too close to Godwinning this thread so I'm going to quit now. But.. just..

Well, my ideas veer into the relm of science fiction/fantasy....so to cover wrongful convictions you'd have the old brain scanner, this machine would scan the human brain to see if they person did infact commit a crime, ergo....you'd eliminate the need for judges or court system, more savings!

But then surely you'd be retrospectively punished for crimes you've commited (dont tell me you've never downloaded something which was copyrighted) and then we'd be without out all-seeing all-killing leader!

Death penalty equals murder in my eyes which is a crime, so your not convincing me.

Well no, 'cause everyone gets a start date, so say Jan 1st 2061 the policy gets implemented, any crime commited after that point counts.
