Well yesterday was a day of many firsts for me,

First time playing in a weekend competition.
    First time play with strangers

    But the good news is,

My best score ever, 26 points for 13 holes off 18 handicap, (previous best was 24 over 18)

Par'ed 5 holes, record for me
    Only scratched one hole
    No 3 putts

Started back at golf late last year after 14 years away (played as a junior), and this is the first time it clicked. Third time out with all new clubs, and it just worked.

Went with the advice that was on a thread here previously, about advice for high handicappers from low handicappers, and i think it really helped me out.

Bit longer than the usual updates here, but on a high :D

Shoot 2 rounds of 87 off 13. Not great but the putter has started to work for the first time in 3 years. Just happy to get out in the fresh air again.

71 gross, -1 in Rathsallgh on Saturday (38 pts), good enough for 2nd in the open competition. Tees were forward and placing everywhere (even in the bunkers strangely..) but it was pretty windy and squally so was very happy with the score. 3 birdies, 2 bogies and a lot of pars.

Went all of last year without winning anything away from home so nice to have already gotten rid of that hex!

36 points in Citywest Lakes (9 hole course X2) off 17

    - 1 birdie
    - 5 pars
    - 6 bogies
    - 5 doubles
    - 1 scratch

Delighted with that one today, first time i've hit 36 points

    Gort in about 30 mins.
Will tell you all when done.
God its good to get out.

Averaging about +5 Gross, off 13, for my last 5 rounds.

    But...

It's only 14 Holes, placing everywhere (fairway & semi-rough), forward tees and bunkers are out of play so definitely nothing to get excited about. When I go round level par for 14 holes I will be happy.

You would need to get +35pts (for 14!) to win, or +33pts to get a category prize anyway! Mad stuff altogether!

After struggling through back injury for the last two years and gaining 2 full shots to a high of 6.5, finally managing to play some decent golf again.

Shot -4 in a 9 hole comp yesterday, 5 birdies and one silly 3 putt bogey. Well enough for us to stroll into the winners closure (fourball).

32 pts off 7 today in South County. 19 on the first 9:D and 13 on the back:o. Definately a round of two halves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,736 ✭✭✭ssbob

Played Tipp Town two weeks ago, very wet, placing everywhere, ball plugged on 2 of the greens!!! I have never broken 100 strokes but had 99 for 16 holes, two out of play, happy with that. It's like I hit a great shot, get too excited then hit a really crap shot....... was playing Castlemartyr last October and was 38 gross through 8 of the back 9, hit a perfect drive on the 18th and then duffed my next shot 5 yards......ended up taking a 12 which should have been a 4, ah well it's not as if I am going to give up trying:D

If I could only bottle what I had on the course today, I'd be a happy chappy!!

17 holes open at home course Woodstock. Shortened winter course as usual this time of year. Normally par 69 off winter tees. Par 65 today as hole 1 was not in play.

    Shot -1 64 for a ridiculous 45 points for the 17 holes off 11.

    5 birdies
    8 pars
4 bogeys (including two missed 18" putts)

Could do very little wrong. Delighted with iron play and pitched and chipped like a demon. Few nice putts fell too notwithstanding missing the two easy putts.

I won't let it get to my head as I had a similar round at the beginning of last year before having a pretty awful year!

Must have been something in the air out there today - I had 43 points for the 17 holes off 12, was hitting it sweetly all day long:D.

28 points off 18 yesterday in The Curragh in 12-hole comp.:D:D All from forward tees and temp greens though, so my putting was absolutely rubbish - three-putted almost all bar two of them...

Still, happy enough to be getting out there again!

39 points for 18 in O'Mahoneys point (Killarney) off 11. No wind and placing in the fairways.
Had 18 going out, 21 on the way in. Was on 3/4 par 5's in 2, so the 3 wood is working :D

Won matchplay 9 and 8 jaysus the other lad was muck;)

Scrubber...muck is an understatement. I'd say watching me play today was like watching a one armed monkey trying out for a junior b hurling team swinging a banjo. But not to worry..a few weeks and I'll be lightening your pockets for ya. :o

level par. playing off 7 in Cobh. Chipped in for Birdie on the final hole (after removing the flag and announcing my intention to do so! ;)) 2 birdies, 2 bogeys one of which was a 3 putt.
Really happy with the swing changes I've made over the winter which our new pro can take a good deal of credit for.

Great score for Cobh JasonW, I played there last year, strange course, some beautiful holes but some mistifying holes, that index 1 is like a Par 5, so hard to get a good drive over that hill, still left with a 5 wood even if you do, also the second par 5 was playing downwind when I played, was over the green with a 5 iron off the tee and a 7 iron into the green, should really be a par 4. What is it like into the wind?

Yeah, the second par 5 (the 4th) was designed as a par 4 but the club changed it to a par 5 to bring the course up to a par 72. Also it gives you a bit of an ease into two difficult holes to follow.
Into the wind it's still reachable in 2 strokes as is the 11th. Still, both greens are tricky enough if you're in the wrong spot and many have walked off with a par after reaching in 2.

Greens are immaculate for this time of year, they're a credit to the greenkeepers.

Fair point, I hit a lovely chip onto that 4th hole from behind the green but the went 2 feet past the hole and the ball got swallowed by that run off area. I really must try and head down there again soon, in need of a clubhouse though!

    spring league

    38pts 12hc
    82 strokes

    9 pars
    8 bogeys
    1 double

    21 front 17 back
case of what might have been had the putter been hotter alot of putts either grazed the hole or lipped out.missed 2 short birdie putts on 2 of the par 3s.hopefully breaking 80 is close starting to think about it to much out on the course on the back 9 when im playing well which is affecting my game:(

27pts off 18 on Saturday in 12-hole comp. Full greens this weekend, but all sodden with water making it v. difficult to score at all.

    At least I'm consistent though...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 160 ✭✭Iangolf

Last Saturday, Winter league 17 points for a 9 hole comp off 14(7), 8 bogeys and 1 par with no greens in regulation and no putts holed from outside 2 feet and missed an 18 incher for par on 18.

Went out the following day with two mates in a competitive "friendly" round, shot 78 for 42 points with ten greens in regulation. This game drives me nuts at times.

Winter League yesteray - 13 holes
    24 points off 10

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,103 ✭✭✭derra

41 pts off 14 in a society winter league in Charlesland yesterday.
Had 24pts on the front 9 which was the best golf i ever played, 1 over for the front 9, was thrilled to bits with that.
Did'nt do much wrong on the back 9, was just pure bad luck to come in with 17pts, 3 putts were going straight into the hole only to lip out on me :D
Thought i was gonna shoot an 80 or lower but was'nt to be, hopefully i will some stage this year.

Went round stepaside 9 hole in 38 strokes

    2 birds
    3 pars
    4 bogeys

I know it's quite an easy course but happy with that result going into the new season.

    Competition: Casual Round (9 holes)
    Course: Lee Valley.
    Handicap: 15

First round since last August (took a break, then injured my back) and I must say I was pretty happy overall.

Only played 9 holes. Some poor play in the first few holes as I found my way, but finished +1 for the last 5 holes.

    1 Scratch
    2 Doubles
    2 Bogeys
    4 Pars

Was striking the ball pretty well for most part, which is great because I ended last season hitting it horribly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,627 ✭✭✭Benicetomonty

73 gross around Tulfarris on Saturday, 36 pts off 1.

Strange round... birdies on all four par 5s and was putting for eagle on three of them, so driving and fairway woods in order. Got through the par threes ok thanks to some good scrambling but was 5 over for the par 4s. Short irons remain the major concern, too many missed greens or 20-40 footers.

Disappointing, but first time in Tulfarris and it was was playing very long in a freezing wind so, overall, have to be happy with plus 1!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,150 ✭✭✭✭LuckyGent88

Adare Golf Club...Winter team of 4
On my own card I shot 77(5 over) off a handicap of 6 off white tee's. Course was in great condition and it was the first time i had played 18 this year and on proper greens.

Shot 4 over on front(didnt help my cause with 2 3 putts on 1 & 2 and a missed 2 footer  on th index 1 5th for a bogey.
Was 2 under for back 9 playing the difficult par 3 16th when i had what i call "A Mannesero" i.e he put 2 balls in water a birdied his 3rd in the JP McManus this year :D

41 points off 11. Club 18 hole singles.

    13 pars
    4 bogeys
    1 double

Not happy off the tee but iron play good and chipping and putting very solid.

14 hole competition in Cobh this morning.

    2 under par total.

3 birdies in a row followed by 2 bogeys in a row. Rest pars.

35 points - wasn't enough to win but should have a fair shout at best gross.

87 gross at The European Club off 1. Very disappointing as have been getting it around in half decent scores of late.

Nice day but windy...this place never plays easy but I've seen it play harder as well. Birdied 11 to get back to a respectable 4 over before coming home in an ambulance. Which proceeded to crash and necessitated a second ambulance :(

Ball-striking poor enough but putting was really disappointing. Bad mistakes accentuated by idiotic three-putting, and capped it all off with some bad luck on 13, where an average drive found a dis-proportionately bad lie. 4 hacks later and I'm still 240 yards fom the green, so kind of lost the rag after that.

Oh well, Tulfarris again on Saturday. Chin up!
