Training while travelling

    Hey guys, I've been weight training for about 3 years now. At the moment i've just started a trip aroud the world for 9 months. I'm in asia for the first four months, currently in thailand.

    I want to try and stay in good shape and just wondering what I should do.
    I will be able to get to a gym, once or max twice a week. What program should I do when I get in there to maintain some kind of strength,

    The last day I did

    Deadlift 3x5
    seated db shoulder press 4 x 10
    pullups 4x8
    bench press 4 x 8
    a1 curls 3 x 10
    a2 triceps pushdown 3 x 10


    then i just try and do about 200 pushups in a morning on days I cant get to the gym. Any suggestions?

    If ya have an iPhone, there's a free app called 'Six Pack Abs' or something to that effect that has loads of bodyweight exercises and routines. Might get some ideas on it and would be handy for travelling I s'pose.

    train when travelling around the world, unheard of :D- i drank like a pig, ate myself fat and took a total break from all training, it was great, worried about training when I got back to normal life.

    Just found this video on how to make your own. Looks pretty decent. Think I'll give that a lash. I'm going travelling with work next month.

    i made myself one and they work but not as well as the real thing! i had some spare cash so decided to get one!! i agree they are very expensive but hey what ever floats your boat!

    I train when i go traveling. I was away for almost 2 years at one and i went to local gyms. But in certain countries it was difficult to find decent food or gyms with enough weight in them. In the big cities in Asia you'd have no problem. But in parts of south and central America and smaller towns in Asia i struggled to get done what i wanted. So just resorted to bodyweight exercises with my backpack on. I drank most nights and never overly stuck to a strict schedule. It was just to maintain some form of training so i didn't lose everything. I wouldn't worry too much though as it only took me a few months to put back on the 35 pounds or so i'd lost. Got my strength back pretty quick too.

    I'll consider buying that one you made yourself if you feel like selling it? I'm lazy in a paradoxical sort of way. :)

    There is no reason a homemade one can't be just as good, even better.
    The parts are all basic and freely available

    The idea of not being able to train while travelling would really put me off. But if you were staying sorta put in each/most places for at least a couple of weeks it probably wouldn't be hard to keep up with finding a decent gym in each.
    I'd like to hear more from anyone who's had success doing it. If you've to travel relatively light what's the story with having very little gym gear? :\

    We were on holidays in Thailand last August for 2 weeks. We stayed in pretty decent hotels and only one of them had a 'gym' which consisted of an old treadmill in a shed which had no air-conditioning.:eek:

    If I were you I would look into training at some of the Muay Thai Boxing gyms which seemed to be located in pretty much all of the places there we stayed in Thailand.

    Lucky you staying in Thailand for a few months. I absolutely loved it there, especially the food.

    I would have had success and maintained by weight and most of my muscle mass had i found a good equipped gym regularly. While in New Zealand, Oz, Singapore and Malaysia i found top of the range gyms for cheap. During that stage i put back on a lot of weight. But once i hit further north the gyms would be lucky to have more than 4 10kg plates. Not worth me doing deadlifts, squats or benching with them. Some of Latin America had decent enough gyms especially Argentina and Chile.

    Also guess what you mean by success as my interpretation could be different from yours. If you want to keep fit, not develop a belly from the beer and fast food and get some cardio in it is easily achievable. But if you go away with a fair amount of muscle and want to maintain it it may be difficult unless you are based in a big city with a well equipped gym for a long time.
