Is this in all PC Worlds? Which one did you see it in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 188 ✭✭_Nuno_

I just bought it in cork. It even comes with the UK USB charger.

    Very nice.

Are they selling any accessories for the Kindle in the Cork branch?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 188 ✭✭_Nuno_

I looked for the leather case with the light and it wasn't there, so I don't think so. They did have other cases but they were more generalist ones for 6 inch ebook readers.

Yeah see both versions on their Irish website

Can't see if it's in stock though

They have a few of both the wi-fi and the 3G model's available in the Carrickmines branch & accessories should be in within the next couple of weeks.

So the leather case that they sell in the amazon kindle store is going to be available as well?

Yes, that leather case will be available alongside a charger and many other kindle accessories.

    Thanks!

But mine came with the mains charger anyway, which I wasn't expecting since the international kindle store does not ship with one. I think this is the UK version being sold here.

Yes, it is indeed the UK version being sold here - with the standard plug fitting but it could be handy for those who have bought kindles abroad or have a malfunctioning charger :)

Do they have any display models? If so, are they working?

Yes, it could still be useful to those who bought the kindle without it. :)

There is a display model yes, and the one in Cork was working.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 634 ✭✭✭IrishPhoenix

Got one in Waterford today. Was delighted.

However, the demo model is only running through demo pages. The buttons don't work so you can't actually see how it would be to use it properly. Also, they had no accessories for the Kindle in store so I'm still short a case.

oh, I pressed a button on the display model in Cork and it changed page so it must have been a coincidence!

Anyway, I was set to buy it so I didn't spend too much time with it.

I am waiting for the lather case with the light to be available as well.

You can still get the case from Amazon UK

Yes, but it's not really worth paying the shipping costs if you can get it in PC world for the same price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,284 ✭✭✭RobertFoster

Amazon don't charge for shipping on orders over £25, and the case with the light is £51 isn't it? PC World will probably charge extra as they've already made £111 = €149.

Is it? I don't know, I have only checked the case when ordering from the .com website, because I was ordering the kindle from there.

The case is very expensive in the UK shop though. 51£ as opposed to 59$?

    Maybe it's not worth it.

How does the Kindle's screen compare in size to an actual book? Is it much smaller?

Its a little smaller but it doesn't affect reading at all. Its just right. Guessing I'd say theres probably about 1/4'' off the border of an average book. After using it for about a month now I still prefer books, its just the convenience of being able to carry this easily and the free internet.

Did you say free internet good sir? I am intrigued

Why not just buy direct from Amazon. Even with postage and VAT, it works out cheaper than €199 for the 3g/wifi, and you have the added bonus of not having to deal with PC World.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,793 ✭✭✭oeb

I have been thinking about picking one of these up, a quick question though. Does the Kindle store have readily available 'gift cards' for it? (Like, lets say how you can pick up an itunes gift card in any o2 store or tesco). Or alternatively, does the store take laser?

    (I don't have a credit card, and I don't want one.)

It has free 3G wireless that you can use to browse the internet. Its basic but you can check emails and use boards mobile. Its only device I know of with free internet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 Only1Rovers

I bought a Kindle on Amazon yesterday, I couldn't see any on the PC World website. Much the same price between buying on-line and in-store.

Also, from my experience the customer care from PC World is horrific. A friend of mine bought a kindle from Amazon a few months ago.... sat on it, rendering it unreadable... he rang Amazon told them the Kindle is broken and they sent him out a new one straight away, no questions asked.

Slightly smaller than the size of an average paperback I'd say.

Mine arrived a few days ago. Amazed how quickly the books arrive once ordered. Pretty much download within a few seconds.

yep it's free internet on the 3g version where amazon has an agreement with a service provider (most countries). there are 2 caveats to this though -

    1. The kindle is only OK for browsing but not great really - some websites won't work at all, entering text is laborious (screen not designed for instant refresh).

    2. The web browsing feature is under an experimental heading in the menu. Many believe that Amazon will remove the free browsing aspect after a period of time.

I wouldn't bother with the 3G model. I have it and have used the 3G functionality maybe twice.

I do too and I've used it loads of times. Particularly when I was away and there were no wi-fi spots nearby. In fact it was a godsend when I was in Munich just before Xmas checking the snow and flight situation at Dublin Airport.

I think it is very shortsighted to just get the Wifi model. The 3G Kindle is not that expensive and it is basically free basic internet anywere for as long as the Kindle works.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,140 ✭✭✭John mac

I bought a 3g one before Christmas, is there a way to tell if the 3g is working (we dont get a 3g icon on the screen) although it connects to the wifi no prob.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,726 ✭✭✭gerryk

Yup. Go somewhere there is no wifi and using the browser, go to wikipedia.
Or buy a book and let it magically arrive. I bought a book when I got on the bus to Galway recently, and was reading it before I got to James' Gate.

Fair point... for your usage patterns. My last 3 phones have had tethering capability, so 3G wasn't necessary.

Hindsight is 20:20 and all that.

Didn't know PC World were selling it. Ordered mine from the states the other day there for abotu 195 with the delivery.. not a massive price difference and the free charger in PC World would be good. I got it because I'm moving to South Korea so the charger would be no use to me anyway :P

the charger (that came from the US) is universal voltage just need to use an adaptor.

Got one last Saturday in PCWorld, Letterkenny.

Great job, so it is. Sadly, I've already been sent an email from Amazon whinging about my Kindle not being in the UK. Any way I can get back within Amazon UK or am I now forever stuck with Amazon.com?

Have a look at that post for details on changing your region. I quite like amazon for leaving this little loophole open.

The WiFi version is cheaper on Amazon, but the WiFi/3G version is cheaper in PC World alright.

Tempting, but I don't think 3G alone is worth an extra 50 quid.

Scrap that, they're both cheaper on Amazon.

Yeah, I did do that to order some books.

But the day aftre (already got the books), I got an email from Amazon saying my Kindle wasn't in the UK, and asking for photo ID to confirm I was in UK.

I've ignored it, though haven't ordered any more books since. No option to put Kindle through a proxy which is a shame :)

Bought the Kindle 3G in PC World. It is a good piece of kit. I see that PC World are selling the leather cover c/w light for €60.00. Its £50.99 on the Amazon.co.uk site. Add postage currency convert and fees and its probably cheaper to buy here in the Republic. Anyone have the cover and is it worth the mullah.

Yeah I have it, I'm not sure it's worth 60 quid but I'm still glad I bought it! As you know the Kindle doesn't have a back light and I find myself using the light on the case more often than not.

Plus I don't think I would be comfortable carrying the thing around without a case.

I have it too, like it a lot, but have a read of these before you buy.......

    http://www.amazon.com/tag/kindle/forum/ref=cm_cd_et_md_pl?_encoding=UTF8&cdForum=Fx1D7SY3BVSESG&cdMsgNo=669&cdPage=27&cdSort=oldest&cdThread=Tx3FJ6CAEP9VL9E&displayType=tagsDetail&cdMsgID=Mx27GBGHGFBDNOX#Mx27GBGHGFBDNOX

tldr..............there's a theory that the metal clips that attach the kindle to the case are hitting something in the kindle hardware, causing a short circuit resulting in ramdom re-boots, loss of memory (page loss) etc.

This (or something strange) is definitely happening to mine - in bursts - I might have 5 - 8 re-boots in 2 days and nothing for a week. It is so flippin annoying. It usually only happens if I've put the kindle down to do something, and then pick it up again....re-set, c 30-120 seconds, and then I have to try find my page again. It never happens when I take the case off. I'm not comfortable using the kindle without the case, tho' (but then, the screen broke on my first kindle :o)

It hasn't happened for 2.5 weeks - but the next time it does I will be ringing Amazon asking them for an alternative case.

Haven't had that myself, fingers crossed!

Oh! I'm mad to get a Kindle is there any deals on at the moment or should I buy direct from Amazon?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 32,865 ✭✭✭✭MagicMarker

Well you can only purchase the kindle from amazon.com, that means higher shipping from american, longer wait and the possibility of import charges.

Or you could just walk down to your local Pc World. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 188 ✭✭_Nuno_

    Mine is already broken :(

Today I picked it up and only the bottom third of the screen works, the rest is blank.

I am bringing it back to PC world for replacement tomorrow.
