How do you get it parked? I'd need special training and 4 extra mirrors to park that yoke.

You save so much money that you can actually employ a team of men to lift it into parking spaces.

No poll option for "bought one in the past, but no longer own it"?

Had a 2003 VRs, which is I sold to my Brother in law. Fantastic car, but not ideal for a 120km a day commute in M50 stop/start traffic (as it was at the time).

Would have no hesitation in buying another (VRs Tdi) or highly recommending one.

What is reliability like in the Skodas?

I know they are better and cheaper VWs, but still a VW. Do they have problems associated with VWs?

I know a fella who has a '10 reg one and he can't praise it enough. I was well impressed by it too. Seems very well put together and yes the boot is huge!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,275 ✭✭✭tobsey

I just bought one and I'm delighted with it. The reason Octavia's are posted in most "What car should I buy thread" is that most of those threads are from people who aren't Motors regulars. They have the same requirements nearly every time, a family car that is affordable and reliable. Octavia ticks all those boxes. fair enough it's not the most exciting but you get a lot of car for your money. Especially when you look at it's rivals, Golf, Astra, Corrolla etc. All much more expensive without any extra benefit.

I've a 2006 vRS and I love it, but not only because of her huge booty.

    Great thread.

The whole Octavia thing on this forum has become very, very tiresome. It's been getting worse as well.

I wonder how many people who keep suggesting the rotten looking things on here actually take their own advice and buy one when it's their money.

    :D

Seriously though, nearly every single thread suggests the Octavia for everything at some stage. If they were that fantastically brilliant the country would be over run with them.

Either that or the Boards Motors forum is weighted towards Octavia owners.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 24,609 ✭✭✭✭arybvtcw0eolkf

2006 1.9 Tdi auto with 170,000 kms on the clock.

Brilliant car (with huge boot :p ).

Only problem so far was the flywheel which had to be replaced (ouch!, posted about it here and saved over €1700 on a replacement).

I really can not fault it, owned since new & I love the thing.

No, there is quite a reasonable explanation actually..... it's because they're very good value for money when compared to their VW/Audi counterpart. Simples.

    ha, indeed... amongst others.

For some reason the windows had a mind of their own as well. Once, when I unlocked the car with the fob key, every window in the car came down all at once. It was very very strange.

All in all though, had the car over two years. Loved it, would buy again sometime in the future.

Bog standard Golf Mark 4 Estate so that is very close to the Octavia. In truth if I had more Skodas on the shopping list that Summer Id probably have one.

That's not as easy to come across as going out to get a different flavour of Tayto.

If someone has experience with the car thats valid, then they can apply that to specific threads. If they had to get a car it would be then down to what their specific situation as to what was needed and if its different then the one he or she recommended the Skoda for its very reasonable for the person to get something else.

I personally drive the VW clone of the Skoda Octavia Estate and I would be happy to recommend the Octavia to people in certain situations. Giving suggestions based on looks cant work either because that is subjective.

I dont have an issue with Skoda at all. I'm sure that they are a perfectly good car. However, they are not the only car out there. This forum seems to suggest them for almost everything.

What bugs me a bit is that the Octavia suggestion comes into almost every thread. People even come in with the old "Octavia before anybody else suggests it" option so I guess I'm not alone in noticing it.

I get where you are coming from and I agree that a lot of the time it can seem like a joke when its mentioned but there is always a pinch of salt needed when going through forums.
At the end of the day anyone daft enough to take a suggestion here at face value and goes out to get the Octavia right away made their own mistake.

Its the same thing as people coming into threads and slating a car because they dont like the look of them and other subjective aspects. People will that have to immediately bin those posts and make their own judgement on the subjective things.

Obviously ive got the same problem because I think theyre rotten looking too.

Theyre common as muck, plain, they offer a top of the range "sporty" model (i use the term lightly here) thats nothing but a tarted up diesel (with owners thinking theyre driving an M3 - sure its a vRS so its rapid lad).

I really have no idea why someone would choose one of these outside of practicalities like initial price, cost to run and space (massive boot lad). None of which interest me as a petrolhead.

This is a prime example of how internet boards can need buckets of salt and why even if the octavia wasnt mentioned every second thread we would still face obstacles.

Vectra seemed to be only having a laugh, at least from my reading of it yet cpoh1 decides to lay down his law and slate him on many aspects of the car.

Its all subjective stuff here. At the same time you are entitled to your opinion its over the top to start calling it a tarted up car that is as common as muck. Its disrespectful for one and doesn't even slightly constitute a worth while post to consider for people doing a bit of research.

My comments on the octavia have nothing to do with vectra and are not designed to hurt the guys feelings? How by giving my opinion am i "laying down the law"? That is bordering on the ridiculous.

As a car fanatic I would consider the octavia to be common (theyre everywhere since the new scrappage deals came out!), boring to drive and look at and the top of the range model is a tarted up diesel. Again im not trying to hurt anyones feelings here its just how i see a run of the mill car that would offer no interest to enthusiasts. Combine that with a lot of owners attitudes who think they own some kind of performance car (the vRS diesel does not fall in that bracket in my book) just makes it worse.

Its perfect in the same way the corolla is to a lot of its owners. Cheap, reliable and perfect for getting from A to B. In that sense its the perfect car for loads of people and the reason theyre so popular. Its also the reason why i dont and never will own one. There's more soul in the horse outside.

Well before the 20 and growning Octavia owners lynch the few speaking against the tide, Ill jump on your side too. I dont find anything about them attractive. They are suggested here too much and oddly family members with them suggest them as options in bizarre circumstances too. There clearly appeal to and exceed at a very limited requirement-set.

I would personally really like a Superb Estate 3.6 V6 4x4, Im not against Skoda at all, but the Octavia? Good god no. When I finally sat in a new one 2years ago after reading all the great stories here my jaw dropped. Its simply appalling or at least compared to what I was led to believe.

Goes back to my post yesterday about the problem with the Motors forum.

What are you referring to though? The vRS is available in Petrol and Diesel models. He mentioned the most popular one, the diesel, whats the problem?

Neither of them are any great shakes anyhow:

    2.0 TSI vRS 1984 cc 16v DOHC
    Turbocharged Fuel Stratified Injection
    200 PS (147 kW; 197 bhp)

2.0 TDI DPF vRS 1968 cc 16v DOHC
    common rail (CR)
    170 PS (125 kW; 168 bhp)

Seems pretty average spec wise... wheres the beef?
