Core Strength

Hey. I'm looking at starting the stronglifts programme and I'm just wondering could anyone recommend or provide a good programme for core strength to do on the days I'm not doing a stronglifts workout. I'm googling but all I get are routines for either burning belly fat or getting a 6-pack. I'm after strength. Couldn't give a fook about a 6-pack. The closest I've come across so far is this one: http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~ricerec/fitness/rice_fitness_center/the_core.html. I'm not doing the reverse crunches or the prone bridges in the stronglifts because I figured I could do a more thorough core workout on the in-between days.

Any suggestions? I haven't come across much on here about it either strangely.

    Thanks in advance!

Do you really need a separate program for your core?

Just train your core the same way as any other body part, use rest days for recovery.

    Overhead squatting ftw

Well let's assume I want a strong core. How much does the likes of squatting work the core? From what I've been doing the last while I haven't really felt it much around the front and sides. I can feel it in my back and my arse cheeks are killing me but is it enough to replace crunches and all that kind of stuff?

Not really. Most people will be limited by general mobility issues when it comes to loading OH squats so will never get a sufficient overload to actually work their core.

Once again the answer is, if you want to improve a particular quality, then you must train it. No matter what Jay Farrant says.

Do your side planks 30mins each side and front plank 1min. If you find those easy lift up one foot at a time. Find a pilates class is your best bet

I'm going to try Pilates on my off days, I heard it's good for flexibility and your core strengh.

I don't mean train your core with squats etc, just do your ab work on the days you train, you don't need a separate day for them.

If your doing stronglifts just do the program, maybe add weight to your planks as you can and do hanging leg raises instead of reverse crunches. Progress them like any other lift.

the back is part of your core-its not all about the abs

I understand that. I just don't want to go the other extreme and leave out the front/sides.
