Ideas for census campaign

Following on from Michael Nugent's thread on the new AI campaign for the April census, it might be useful to put together a few of our own ideas. This isn't -- I hasten to add -- an attempt to usurp AI's plans or designs, but simply to produce a few more graphics that people can use for things like .sig banners, facebook whatever's and so on.

    Anyhow, here are two:

    142852.png

    142851.png

Suggestions welcome. And your own designs, of course :)

Perhaps what is of equal importance but how to break it down into a snappy slogan would be a campaign to persuade folk from ticking "catholic' just because they were baptised as one and think its just the right thing to do. My own sister has 4 kids, none being raise catholic, she has not considered herself catholic for 20 years, does not believe in God but has been ticking "catholic" in the census for years. She is just one of many i reckon.

I'm not an expert but that might just fall outside boards.ie sig guidelines!

I like robin's 2nd one, clearly showing a tick beside no religion and a tagline.

Personally I wouldnt answer the question at all seeing how my (lack of) religion is none of the Governments business.

However Im all for anything that stops people unthinkingly putting "Catholic" or "Protestant" (or whatever) as a default option with this in mind my offer for this thread is:
any person who knowingly provides false information on their census return is guilty of an offence and may be subject to a fine of up to €25,000

Id also like to see a similar campaign re the "Irish language" question but thats one for another thread/forum.

This one might look better -- it's longer and a bit smaller.

Brilliant campaign. Have you got some facebook pages set up that people can add a like to?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,746 ✭✭✭✭Galvasean

Apparently over 50% of people in the UK are non-religious according to a BSA survey.
These are of course radically different results from those of the last Census, which measured over 70% of the population as Christian, and a tiny 15% of the public as non-religious.

The BSA results provide further evidence that the particular wording of the religion question on the Census distorts its results. Rather than asking ‘What religion are you?’, the BSA asked, ‘Do you regard yourself as belonging to any particular religion?’. This is not a leading question and, unlike the Census question, will not tempt cultural Christians into defining themselves as religious. Whereas the Census question seems to measure a weak form of cultural affiliation, the BSA measures something much closer to actual religious belief.
So apparently slightly different wording makes a big difference.

I have updated my sig, and also added a quote that a few around here might enjoy. :)

btw, should I be concerned that my house's census form hasn't arrived yet? I think some people I know have theirs already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,292 ✭✭✭TangyZizzle

That 'Dont let Mammy etc' one is brilliant. Im concerned at the moment. Im about to turn the house upside down, find that form(if its arrived) and undo Mother Zizzle's mistake.

They only started delivering them on Friday. It's not to be filled out before April 10. It's a bit premature to be concerned.

    0: Thou shalt post occasionally.

    I. The Mods, CMods and Admins art thy rulers, and thou shalt obey their wills. For, lo, if thou shouldst ignore their wise decisions, thou shalt find thy body transmuted and shalt live as a fish, should the Gods take mercy upon thee, or thou shalt be utterly annihilated.

II. Thou shalt not flame the Staff, for while questioning of rules is admirable, this is so only while such questioning is of an intelligent manner.
Corollary to Commandment II: Thou shalt behave in a manner befitting a smart mammal.

III. Thou shalt keep thy posts in the true and excellent forums into which our greater Forum hath wisely been divided.

IV. Thou shalt treat those of greater experience than thyself with the respect that is their due.

    V. Thou shalt not be guilty of the terrible sin of Trolling on this forum, neither shalt thou acknowledge the existence of those inadequate specimens who shouldst choose to break this commandment, lest thou shouldst be counted amongst them.

VI. Thou shalt not take those things which belong to the other good, and often wisely ruled, Forums of distant lands and distribute them here as your own, for then shalt thou be truly lost to greatness.

VII. Thou shalt not take those things which belong to this great and noble Forum, for then shalt thou truly be annihilated, yea, even unto the very account which thou hast defiled.

VIII. Thou shalt not accuse other Members falsely of crimes, for the deception shalt be uncovered, and the punishment shalt be unto thee, as it were tenfold.

IX. Thou shalt not ask repeatedly to learn the arts of others; once shalt suffice, and if many should require the service, then the appropriate Topic shalt be Pinned.

    X. Thou shalt not take the accounts of others for thine own purposes, for this charade shalt not survive for long, and thou shalt be removed from the forum forevermore.

    Something like...

Up to €25,000 fine for lying, and I won't end up in "hell" for telling

If you're not religious, say no this census.

    :pac:

I actually posted something along the same lines on the page. I know the guy who started the event, he goes to college with me. Several other people had also pointed this out. They were all deleted and the bit that says "Negative comments will be removed." was added.

Yeah I noticed the "Negative comments will be removed." bit. Whenever I see such notices alarm bells start ringing. Can't back up your argument? Simple, ban anything that might disagree with you.
It seems to be a college thing. The ones I spoke with were students too. hey probably think they're being anti-establishment or something

Why don't the members of the A&A forum in conjunction with boards.ie put together a campaign?

Boards.ie has a wide audience, a campaign for an accurate census isn't biased either, it is just that, a campaign for honesty and accuracy in the upcoming census and reminding our families etc. to fill in the form accurately.

I see our well reasoned arguments against that stupid catchphrase 'honest to godless' fell on deaf ears, why couldn't a less confrontational and more secular campaign have been levied along the lines of accuracy in the census and highlighting its importance for future policy making?

Because people just don't seem to care, they'd rather put together campaigns to make people put down Jedi because they think it's funny.
