Odlanier Solis VS Vitali Klitscho- March 19 in Germany

    ESPN wrote:
Heavyweight titleholder Vitali Klitschko will make his mandatory defense against Odlanier Solis on March 19 in Germany. The contracts were signed on Monday, both camps told ESPN.com.

A purse bid had been scheduled for last Friday, but with the camps close to a deal they asked the WBC to postponed it, believing they would work out an agreement. They did over the weekend and it was signed Monday.

"We got the signed contracts now and we have a go for March 19 in Cologne," said Bernd Boente, Klitschko's manager. "I think that Solis is a very, very tough opponent. His fantastic amateur record speaks for itself -- three times world amateur champion and Olympic gold medalist. He is definitely one of Vitali's toughest opponents. I think it's a very interesting fight for the audience."

Said Klitschko, "I am very happy the deal is done. I have heard and read different quotes from Solis saying that I tried to avoid him. This is nonsense. There's a reason why I'm WBC champion and I am proud of holding the same title that Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis held. I will show inside the ring that I am the strongest heavyweight champion and I am 100 percent sure I will successfully defend my title. But I know Solis is a very tough opponent and I will not underestimate him."

Klitschko-Solis is the second Klitschko heavyweight title fight to be scheduled in recent days. Last week, unified champion Wladimir Klitschko, Vitali's younger brother, rescheduled a defense against England's Dereck Chisora for April 30. It had been scheduled for Dec. 11 before Wladimir suffered a torn abdominal muscle.

Solis (17-0, 12 KOs) was a 2004 Cuban Olympic gold medalist and later defected. He turned pro in 2007 and is based in Miami. He has been calling for a fight with Vitali Klitschko almost since the day Klitschko returned from an injury-induced four-year retirement to regain his old title from Samuel Peter in October 2008.

Solis scored a 10th-round disqualification victory against Ray Austin in title elimination bout in Miami on Dec. 17 to become Klitschko's mandatory challenger. The WBC had ordered at its annual convention that Klitschko would have to fight the Solis-Austin winner next.

Solis, 30, who is aiming to become the first Cuban heavyweight titleholder, is anxious for the fight and was not happy about Klitschko's negotiating tactics.

"This is not about money -- it's about respect," Solis said shortly before the deal was finalized. "The Klitschkos seem to think that I am just another opponent like the last tomato cans they cherry-picked so Vitali could easily beat them up. But I am not only the mandatory challenger. I have been the best amateur fighter in the world and I will prove that I am the best professional fighter as well.

"I am not interested in a couple of extra dollars. The only thing I want is to strip the world championship belt from Vitali. Klitschko shouldn't be afraid of losing money; he should only be afraid to lose his title. I will end his career."

Klitschko (41-2, 38 KOs), 39, will be making his sixth defense of his third title reign. He is coming off a shellacking of Shannon Briggs on Oct. 16. Klitschko battered Briggs and won a shutout decision. Briggs wound up in the hospital for several days after the fight.

Klitschko, 6-foot-7, 250 pounds, will have a significant height advantage against Solis, who is 6-1, 260 pounds.

"Solis was a very good amateur and is a very good pro, and I expect he will be the best guy he can be," said Shelly Finkel, Klitschko's adviser. "We'll see if it is good enough to offer a challenge to Vitali."

Boente said he has been in touch with ESPN boxing programmer Doug Loughrey to try to make a deal with the network to carry Wladimir's fight with Chisora and Vitali's with Solis under similar terms to the ones forged for previous bouts involving the brothers. That agreement was for a live stream on ESPN3.com followed by taped replays the following day on the main network.

Come on Solis, put down Vitali! If Odlanier can come in this fight in good shape he can take the crown. He is not your average contender. He's got the power plus the combos.

Never seen Solis fight but from what has been said on here, it seems like for once this could be an entertaining heavyweight fight.

    Vitali by accumulation beatdown TKO.

Solis needs to come in at less than 250 to have a chance in this fight

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,450 ✭✭✭megadodge

While Solis has plenty of talent, his weight has to be a serious concern. Bearing in mind he was only a heavy for most of his career in the ams (not super-heavy) and he's only 6'1" and that he regularly weighs 18 1/2 stone + you have to question his discipline and actual desire to be the very best.

As usual Vitali will be in tip-top shape, so unless Solis is well under 18stone I cannot see him winning, going down in the late rounds from consistent long range jabbing and heavy rights - kinda like most Klitchko fights actually.

He's a handy enough boxer but as mentioned above his fitness and weight is a concern, Vitali will jab all night and stop him late I reckon.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,003 ✭✭✭CorkMan

Solis has very fast hands for a heavyweight though. I saw a fight and knew heard he had a lot of power, but he was throwing 3-4, even 5 punch combos regularly, with power.

I don't think he is a fighter who Vitali can jab and knock out late on. Solis has the talent to be much more than that and actually KO Vitali, but he needs to weight a lot less. Against Austin he was very tired for 1-2 rounds after a heavy round.

    Would agree 100%

Solis needs to sort his weight if he wants to have a chance of lasting and/or winning.

If he comes in against Vitali in poor shape, all he can look forward to is a night of being ground down.

When he turned pro in 2007 he weighed 230lbs, then by the time of his first pro fight in 2007 he was up to 258lbs.

He managed to get down to the 204lbs a few times, but his last five fights have seen him at 260lbs, 262lbs, 271lbs, 268lbs and 260lbs.

It would seem that it was mostly in 2009 and 2010 that he let the weight slip badly.

It appears that his hunger may lean more towards steak than it does towards titles.

He comes in that heavy in March and he can go back to eating as much as he likes because he will just be another notch on Vitali's belt.

This could be the ultimate snoozer if they dont step up and rise to the occasion .
Klitskcho dosent like to engage , and Solis dosent like to work.

But , opponents try to bulk up as much as possible when they face the Klitscho's .
Opponents are usually a bit too heavy for their weight , if you know what I mean .

If Solis sort his weight out and trains properly, i think he will actually beat Vitali. He has the talent it's just his attitude that needs sorting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,684 ✭✭✭Boooourns

From watching the Austin fight he just doesn't have the power to trouble Vitali, he's got good hand speed but i just can't see him putting Vitali on the backfoot.
When was the last time Vitali even lost a round?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,003 ✭✭✭CorkMan

Wouldn't it be something if Solis' beats Vitali, and he signs to fight David Haye in his next match, lol

I know it is funny looking at it now, but there is more than a slight possibility.

Go to 2:12 of this video. Hear that body punch land and say he has no power!

EDIT: embed isn't working. Type in "Odlanier Solis vs Mamuka Jikurashvili" at youtube and that is the vid.

Its a great shot but he doesn't do that to Vitali, i hope i'm wrong as we need someone new on the scene.

Solis Training At High Altitude For Klitschko Title Clash

While WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko hasn’t even started his preparation for his next title defense on March 19th in Cologne, mandatory challenger Odlanier Solis and his team have already spent one week in their high altitude camp.

"La Sombra“, his trainer Pedro Luis Diaz and Jose Perez arrived at the Sierra Nevada only one day after the press conference. The three-time world amateur champion and 2004 Olympic gold medalist is currently training above 2.500 meters (8,000 feet) to get ready for his first world title shot in the pro ranks.

"On March 19th we will see the best Odlanier Solis since he turned pro in 2007“, says coach Pedro Diaz. "We have perfect conditions here in the mountains. I have been here a couple of times with different athletes. It’s a perfect place to get in perfect shape.“

The team will stay at the high-altitude camp until the end of February and do the first sparring sessions in the Sierra Nevada before returning to Cologne for the last phase of preparation.

It looks like Solis will be coming in at very good shape. If he does I can see him winning.

My god corkman you should be on commission for this one. You are doing a great job promoting Solis.

Sadly I don't think he is good enough. He has talent and would be competitive with Vitali if he was well conditioned since he turned pro.

Vitali is a tremendous fighter and despite being on a long winning streak, he is a hungry champion.

Also lets not forget, Audley Harrison was training at altitude. :p

There is no doubt that Solis has the skills to really trouble Vitali who in all honesty hasnt really been tested since he came out of retirement. His weight is a huge issue still and he needs to get into shape if he is to trouble him. A lot has been made of the height difference but Vitalis reach is only 1 inch longer than Solis. If Solis can get Vitali out of his comfort zone and force Vitali to fight at close range he stands an excellent chance, I for one have changed my mind about who will win this more than once, I just hope its a great fight because Im really looking forward to it

Vitali's training pics seem like more of a holiday than anything else. The first one in particular is pure lolage :)

    Solis -246.5

Solis is some state:o: He should be ashamed of himself coming into a world title fight looking like that.

Holyfield who is 20 years his senior, with a similar height/build came in like this last year ffs

    0.jpg

Holy came in at 214lb for that fight.

Solis should be no more than 220.

    Vitali will destroy him.

    Solis lol

i think i'll change my prediction after seeing the weigh in video.:p Solis is hard to figure out, the fight of his career and he can't be bothered to get in top shape for it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,003 ✭✭✭CorkMan

246lbs, he only weighed that low once before in his professional career.

I believe he won't be tired as much as he was in the Ray Austin fight. Remember David Tua weighed in 247lbs against Lennox Lewis but kept up the pressure for 12 rounds He didn't get on the inside of Lewis' jab but he was fit.

Gold medal in 2004 Olympics, 3 amateur world championships, 6 Cuban National Championships (not a mean feat) and beating Felíx Savon 2 times out of 3. Savon himself who won 3 Olympic gold medals (plus being Cuba's sole Heavyweight boxer in the 2000 Olympics despite. 18 year old Solis beating him earlier in the year)

David Tua had real firepower Corkman and was a hard bastard, he was not fat imo at his peak, he just a big lad like Tyson .

Solis is not, he is fat, really fat and soft.He looks a right state and will get well beaten.Pity because Vitali looks vulnerable now.

Yes. I believe if he was to lose a lot more weight it could have affected him badly. 246lbs is a good enough weight, way better than 271lbs, 25lbs better.

A big part of Klitschko's array is the jab, but Solis keeps his hand up very high peek-a-boo style, even a bit higher. His defence is very tight. Klitschko's jabs won't be getting through easily. Solis has great hand speed for a heavyweight, and I have watched some of his fights and believe me he has the power. I have seen him put fellas down for the count of 10 with 1 body punch.

If Solis is fit for the 12 rounds and turns up on the night I think he will win.

Johnny Nelson is a problem on sky sports boxing coverage. He has 2 characteristics

    1)he likes to talk

    2)he isn't very intelligent.

When you put both of them things together, you get the enthusiastic verbal diarrhoea he usually spouts.

Solis is not a single shot KO fighter. Thats not even taking Vitali's great chin into it.
