    Hi,

Finished college in June and havent been able to find a job and thinking about partaking in the work placement programme as I dont have much experience and thought this would be a good idea and also cant find a job at all and thought that this programme would pass my time and have something to fill in in my cv till i get a paid job instead of having an empty space.

I was just wondering does anyone think that the work placement programme is a good idea?

    Thanking you :)

I did it and got a great job out of it. However, you have to not be afraid to walk away if the position isn't right for you. If you're not getting good experience and there's not likely to be a position for you at the end of it, just walk away. Remember that you do not owe them anything

It was great for me. The company was good, received good training and got a decent wage at the end of it. Obviously, it is a little difficult to keep yourself motivated when you know you're not getting paid for the work you're doing, but it's a lot better than sitting at home filling out your 100th application form.

You get a visit from a Fás employee about 3-4 months in, just making sure that you're getting experience, and happy in the position, it's a fairly simple meeting if there's no problems. I have heard that getting the Welfare office to switch your payments to your bank account and remove the requirement to sign on can be a bit of a nightmare, but I didn't do go through it myself, I was lucky to be working beside the post office and not far from the welfare office

Never thought of the hassle with the changing over payments but i'm beside the post office and welfare office too so that should be ok!

Thank you very much for you reply, its good to know someone got a job out of it and thought it was good. Hopefully it wont be much longer till i get a job. Even though your not getting paid, at this stage i'd rather be working than sitting in the house all day!

I had a look at the fas.ie site and I have to say I was shocked at the types of jobs being offered as WWP's now. Anything from Manufacturing Engineers to Retail Assistants. I mean Retail Assistants? Wtf?
This is clearly being exploited as free labour and anyone who thinks otherwise is in cloud cuckoo land quite frankly.

Because clearly, people are going to work as retail assistants with no discernible benefits for no reason.

I know numerous people, both IRL and from posts on the various threads on this subject, who have actually taken part in the programme (as opposed to the people who glance at the advertisements and have a seizure). None of them have felt exploited. The few who felt they weren't getting good experience did this amazing thing that's very difficult to do if you're actually being exploited: they left

My husband is on the WPP. He had no problem switching the payments into his bank account and signing on by post. There was no issue and he said if anything the SWA couldnt have been more helpful and nicer about it all.

He is delighted with his placement. He is learning loads and hopefully he will be kept on at the end of it. He is a training as a barber by the way so it was the WPP1 or whatever it is not the graduate one. It's the best move he ever made though as no one would have taken him on otherwise.
