what you eat after training probably needs more focus than what you eat before. Before training keep it light, try not to eat too close to training either. After, the best foods you could eat are fruit, tuna sandwich, rice cakes with cottage cheese, a jacket potato with tuna or cottage cheese. The best food or drink you could eat would be fruit yoghurt or chocolate milk, as these have nearly the ideal carb to protein ratio.

Is it true that if you don't eat within half-an-hour of a session, you will only benefit from 50% of the work?

Hi Desire to aspire, yes it true you will loose 50%, if its hard to prepare something that quickly after training, you could in the meantime take a protein shake.. i use it only after i train..

It's important so. Would a sandwich and a banana be alright?

well you have 2 hour window to reload your muscle glycogen. Carbs are converted to glycogen one and a half times quicker faster than normal during this 2 hour period, so the longer you wait the longer it takes to start the recovery process.

What if im on a primal diet and dont eat carbs?
Ive been trying to figure out what i should eat before and after myself.
I ussually have a pack of pumkpin seeds handy for right after a workout and then go and cook something.
Lots of protein and fats in those.

ye they would be fine, it also depends what kind of training you are doing, if you are doing weights, you will need to eat foods with protein after training..

Lets say if you do a lot of swimming, I train maybe 4/5 days a week in pool. Try and have an egg in morning with wholemeal bread. Morning cuppa have some nuts, blueberries, natural yogart, some pumpkin seeds. Lunch is prawn/salad etc. Some nuts during the day. Sometimes before I swim I have a banana and then dinner after swim....

This is complete nonsense. I'm sorry but you have no idea what you are talking about. Please show me a peer reviewed published scientific study that states that you lose 50% of the benefit of your workout if you don't eat within half an hour of your workout.

OP, some good protein and carbs are are good meal to have postworkout to replenish muscle glycogen. Something like sweet potato, some veggies and chicken, steak, salmon, etc. A whey protein shake if you want to take some supplements is also a decent choice. Keep it simple.

ok im nit saying its scientific. but its common knowledge, to get the best results from weight training, you should load up on protein as soon as you can once fininshed training, i wouldnt leave it longer thanan hour if you could, but its not essential, just for best results the quicker you can eat the better.. thats just my opinion..

There is so much poor advice in this thread, I don't know where to start!

For lots of GOOD info regarding eating before, during and after training read will's sticky.
