She's not the worst, but I eagerly await the pairing of Mitchell and Brooker, plus even Carr has a very razor-sharp dry wit, which should work well with the previous two.

It just didn't work on the election night thing. It should be awesome but I'm not that hopeful alas.

Brooker scripted is very funny. Brooker off the cuff is painful to watch. Mitchell is a classy guy though.

Why does it have to be live?

    That election thing was painful.

i presume this is direct copy with the daily show, with them basically looking at reusing news clips?

ll is very witty but can out shown by professional comedians

I see it's due to run for 15 weeks, they really fancy this as a UK version of The Daily Show.

Could be a disaster for Channel 4 if the format doesn't work.

The Election night was a bit of a mess and there are still too many presenters.

Either David Mitchell or Charlie Brooker should be given their own show, they are both excellent but very different presenters.

Still trying to get some tickets for the filming of at least one of these shows, better get them at some stage.

A weekly, live comedy and current affairs show hosted by David Mitchell, Jimmy Carr, Charlie Brooker and Lauren Laverne

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,829 ✭✭✭KerranJast

    I'd say it could work:
Jimmy Carr as MC. He's used to that from 8 out of 10 cats and he's good at summing up current events in his fast pun style.
Charlie Brooker to do some of his mashup stuff. Please please please pre-record him C4. He's never convinced live.
Lauren Laverne to do audience interaction, the odd interview.
If what I'm hearing is right David Mitchell is going to do a Colbert on it and be a more extreme version of Paxman. :D

On paper it sounds great. The live format could destroy it quickly though.

The two main reasons The Daily Show works so well are:
    - it's not live, so the staff can adjust the non-interview content to suit and go back over and fluffed bits so they whole show is very slick
    - Jon Stewart, while a great presenter and writer himself, has a huge team of talented writers and researchers to trawl through all the media for comedy gold. I read somewhere that they've a room full of TiVo's (Yank Sky+ boxes) that records every minute of the major news channels and then a team of writers trawls through them all for bits for the show.

Poor Jimmy Carr's a bit on edge :D From Twitter:

    x2_43ef4c3

"Is it cheating if we rehearse a live show? My god I'm nervous."

    x2_43f2218

    "So, no pressure then...."

So it's definitely going to be live, but they're working from a script? This could work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

Someone on DS posted this review of the unbroadcast pilot, sounds a bit more promising with all the roles delegated.

They seem to have realized that Brooker is best in edited footage like this. It's pretty good, but there are a lot of kinks that need to be ironed out.

This guy was actually quite interesting though, just Jimmy Carr didn't know how to handle him.

ZZZZzzzz... what was the point in having it live?. Record it and use the best 30 minutes.

    It's no 11 o Clock show or The Day-Today.

some pretty controversial stuff earlier on by Carr about the catholic church,

that won't go down too well with his relations in Ireland

Lauren Lavigne is hot as fvck

I am sure they are used to his brand of humour.

It's quite good that Brooker seems to be back to his old ways.

Hah, that King really was in an episode of Star Trek Voyager
The king is also an acknowledged fan of the science fiction saga Star Trek. In 1996, while he was still a Prince, he appeared in the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Investigations". It was a non-speaking role as he was not a member of the Screen Actors Guild

Flicked it on and off, David Mitchell seemed to be the only one really rocking out. An hour is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,857 ✭✭✭✭Dave!

    Brooker was good there.

They should give him his own show where he discusses news stories and criticises the media coverage of world events... Hey wait a minute...

Is this gonna be Channel 4's answer to the Daily show in America, I hope that its more political and ripping the p*ss out ot the Tories like they do with the Rupublican party in America, they'd have a lot of good material to work from.

Mitchell is excellent at handling the more serious topics, Brooker is doing a good job with regards to the satirical observations but Carr and Laverene are.. I don't know.. not needed whatsoever. But yes, 1 hour is too too long.

It's not too bad, I think. It could be better and really shouldn't be live. And David Mitchell contstantly clearing his throat is really annoying.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,551 ✭✭✭panda100

David Mitchell is great and Brookers bits good too. Jimmy carr isn't great at political satire.

Don't understand why Lauren Lavigne is there, it pisses me of when they put a token women in there just for her looks. Someone like Katy Brand would have been much better, considering she writes for the brilliant private Eye, but I guess she's not good looking enough :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,201 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Sky+'d it so watching it now..

.. 10 minutes and the goddamn audience is painful!

It's like a mixture of watching the audience at 'The X Factor' or 'The Republic of Telly' with ridiculous shots of gombeens gurning in the audience and laughing at every single f*cking punchline.. you know this is being used:

    applause_sign.gif

To be fair, first impressions are if it's not great, it's 15 weeks (so just short of 4 months if my division is.. carry the one.. numerator.. is right!) long and it's live. They've plenty of time to gauge feedback, trim the segments that aren't working and improve on it.

I don't know.. I'm just relieved to see something live that, even if not hilarious, it's pushing the boundaries of what we're used to on TV here.

I'm staying hopeful, and back to it!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,940 ✭✭✭Corkfeen

After Mitchell's discussion there, it transformed into a serious talk show rather than comedy.:D They should just give Brooker and Mitchell their own show as Carr and Laverne seem out of place on it.

Laverne is quite good on the Culture Show, where she features predominantly as a host, which I guess they wanted for this too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,116 ✭✭✭starviewadams

Think it's decent enough,it will take them a few weeks to get comfortable with the format anyways.Would definitely get rid of Lauren Laverne though, she just comes across as an idiot.

Better then watching Delamere and his ''comedian'' friends on The Panel anyways.

Can't say I'd be in a hurry to tune in again on this evidence. Was a struggle to last the hour to be honest. Not too interested in seeing more interviews with junior ministers in the UK government. I get enough unintentional comedy from our own ones.
