I love loads of english ales but Bishops Finger is a decidedly average example of one.

I bought it for the amusing name but it was in O'Briens and tesco as well. Not bad but not much to write home about. I guess it depends on whether or not you like yer english ales.

To give you an idea of ale ive tried & liked & not liked. Old Speckled Hen; nice if a little dull. Hob Goblin; very nice. London Pride; nice & spicey. Innis & Gunn; did not like.

Is it like any of those?^

Its 1.99 which isn't exactly a bargain so it would want to be decent enough. There are loads of choices at that price.

Aldi doing German beers for €1.09 / 500ml bottle at the moment - think they may be on runout. Berliner Kindl, Tucher Ubersee and a couple of others.

What type beer is the Berliner Kindl and the Tucher See. Wheat beer or lager?

It's like Speckled Hen, kind of lacking in any real flavours.

Lager. The Tucher Ubersee is yum.

edit: they're not own brand BTW. They seem to have arrived in Aldi via an Australian importer.....

Have to say on a general point, im starting to buy beer in Lidl less & less.

Their franziskaner has gone up to 1.99. Their uber budget Aldi's St Etienne equivalent geffenwalder is pretty poor. In fact the 99c St Etienne is a better beer than lidl's Perllenbacher as well. Aldi has a wheat beer in at the moment thats very similar to Frani but its only 1.79. Lidl are doing tyskie & lech for 10c less than tescos & dunnes but thats hardly a huge reduction. Its like their not trying that hard to provide bargains anymore.

Also i noticed Aldi has a couple of unknown german beers in, a pilsner & a 2 lagers that come in the same box? Looks interesting.

Im changing over to Aldi for budget beer for the time being.

See my post earlier re the German beers. My fave is the Tucher Ubersee but any of these I've picked up have had a best before date of 3rd Feb so doubt they'll be on sale past next week.

Thats a shame. I tried the Berliner kindl last weekend. It was lovely actually. And only 1.09euro.

I have to say I think the Perlenbachers are quality. I would get them ahead of any "mainstream" beers now.

My mate gave me a bottle of Perlenbacher that he said he got in Aldi. It was really nice. I'd even say it was as nice as the Peroni and Furstenburg I'd had just before...

Anyway, 6 large bottles for 5 quid. Nice.

Well i had a couple of St Etienne (4.8%alc) bought from aldi on friday night & i found myself pleasantly surprised. Its a decent beer for the price of 99c, nothing special but smooth enough & absent of any metallic taste which i found overpowering in lidl's grafenwalder.

Yeah quite impressed & another good example of a budget beer that is way nicer than the massively advertised big name 'premium' beers. It would be a great beer for bbq's & parties. Cheap n cheerful.

Spot on there, that graf leave a nice little head on a lad of a morning.

Etienne is good also, in Lidl Noblaner is not bad and Perlenbacher is good value at €6.26 for 6 x .500 btls.

Still say kaiserdom in Dunnes is excellent 4.8% 6 x 500 for €6.36.

Nice smooth taste and clean, no head even after a good intake

Grafenwalder 2x500ml cans for €1.50 in lidl, the normal grafenwalder, not the weiss. I think it starts on monday 4th april and ends on the sunday, it is not online yet but was in the leaflet. I think tennants was the same, 2 for 1.50.

I had a few cans of graf one night last summer (we call it 'the metal beer', because of the manky metallic taste) & i got a humdinger of a hangover off it the next day. Its also absolutely disgusting if its not chilled properly. The true sign of a crap beer.

Yeah the perlenbacher is a decent enough budget brew alright. I was drinking it for a year & got a bit sick of it so St etienne fits the bill nicely as a replacement. It'll be my summer beer with a few dearer beers now & then.

Never had Kaiserdom or Noblaner. Will give them a go.

we buy galahad in aldi every weekend 7.99 for 12 cans. I wish I could get it on draught in pubs! its like a milder version of miller/bud and i've given it to a few people and they all liked it.

I have tried the dry cider in there and its really nice. I never really touched cider before but found it to be refreshing. Its a 2L bottle. Lovelly stuff. Another is a spiced rum. Captain something. Like Captain Morgan. Prob about 85% close to it. Captain Morgan was a little nicer TBH.

The beers are all down to taste so its really trial and error.

    Great for making Baileys coffee's!

Perlenbacher seems to have disappeared off the shelves in Aldi. I checked 4 Aldis looking for it and can't get it anywhere...

Anyone ever try the Breda stuff? I remember going on holidays to Jersey years ago and it was the biggest drink over there. I haven't seen it since then until I spotted it in Aldi today.

The beer selection in Lidl has gone to sh1te!

I used to go specifically for Budvar / Staropramen which were pretty good value @ €1.95 but they've stopped stocking same. I then went on to Franziskaner that I'm not that blown away by @ €1.79 but it went up to €1.99 after Christmas and ever since is regularly out of stock in my local. Thankfully I've a Superquinn pretty close so regularly avail of the 6 for €12 deal.

There's a lovely blonde beer there, I can't quite remember the name, had a white label with red writing. Was bottled, cheap enough as well

I drink both Gallahad and draught miller and to me Miller has amore full bodied taste and quite strong whereas I find Galahad light in body and in strength but grand if you want a few beers and clear head in the morning.
