Due to historical injuries with my knees I can't squat much more than BW and even then they get sore.

I looking stronglifts 5x5 and am wondering what could I replace squats with ? ( I know removing squats is a pretty big handicap for strength training.....

    You can't.

The only thing you could replace them with is other squats.
Course you could just not do them, i.e do the progression with bench, deadlift, press and chins.

While there isn't really any substitute for the squat due to how effective it is there are other options to work the legs. Try the squat with dumbbells even. You won't be adding much mass but you shouldn't really lose any either. Or you can try lunges and see if they hurt your knees. Or maybe try a hack squat. Some people find that is more stress on the knees but i find once i don't bring them over my toes they are fine and i feel them more on my quads.

If push comes to shove you can always try a leg press combined with stiff leg deadlifts. Yeah it's great if you can squat and add the weight as it is a great strength and mass building exercise. But if you are just looking to increase strength a bit and get into shape it's not the end of the world.

The other option is to find out what the problem with your knees is and if or if not you can get it fixed....

thanks for replies lads. Knee problem is cartliage so physio previously advised not to do anything that will make it worse.

will just incorporate some of the other leg work into the program.

    thanks

My friend says he has bad knees and can't do squats but finds the leg press doesn't hurt his knees at all. Maybe try the leg press? He know its not as good as doing squats but says its better than doing nothing.
