EPL Team of the 'Half-Season' (with a twist)

this is, i know, a bit of a trivial thread in a way, only 20 games in and all, but it's always interesting to see who people would pick if awards were dished out now.

as a bit of a twist, you're only allowed to pick one player from any one team, which shouldn't make teams weak, considering the whole league is so tightly bunched.

    here's mine....

    Foster (Brum)
    Onouha (Sun)----Kompany (City)----Terry (Che)----Baines (Eve)
    Jones (B'burn)

    Adam (B'pool)
    Nani (Utd)
    VDV (Spurs)
    Nasri (Ars)
    Carroll (New)

it's fúcking harder than it looks!

    Reina (Liv)
Ivanovic (Che) Nelson (Bla) Kompany (Mnc) Baines (Eve)
Nani (Man) Nolan (New) Nasri (Ars) Bale (Spu)
    Elmander (Bol) Welbeck (Sun)

Nasri out of his ideal position but I thought he filled in well for Fabregas. Either way I had to accommodate him.

i've got to say, although alternatives are always welcome, i'd struggle to take seriously any team that doesn't have at least 2 of Nasri, Nani and VDV, if not all 3.

and Kompany as well, i believe, is absolutely vital.

it's also funny to me that so many of us have ignored Tevez and Berbatov so far, the two top scorers in the league if i'm not mistaken.

I was thiking that too, but then you'd have to leave out Kompany, who imo has been the best CB in the league alongside Vidic this year. You'd have to leave out Nani too, who has been brilliant.

Whereas there is plenty more good strikers this season whereas Nani/Nasri/VDV have been head and shoulders above everyone else.

true, and i did think that too.

it's still a little amusing to me.

maybe it is just more a sign of the lack of standout CBs, and how good Nani has been, rather than people omitting them due to forgetting them.

There has been a lot of very good attacking midfielders, from Nani, Nasri, Bale and VDV to the lesser lights of Brunt, Adam and Etherington. Not too many CBs have really stood out so I put in Vidic, which meant I couldn't put in Nani but I felt this was ok since there was decent choices in his position.

Thought Terry was the best CB myself to date. Modric also deserves an honourable mention, he's been phenomenol this year, a few months ago Barca were reportedly interested in him and I've heard that he's the player AC Milan are most worried about.
    Anyways, my team,

    Foster

    Onouha
    Terry
    Nelson
    Baines

    Nani
    Adam
    VDV
    Nasri

    Tevez
    Carroll

I'm amazed how many have picked Terry. Having a stinker of a season and the biggest liability in the Chelsea defense.

This has been Terry's best start to a season in a long time, problem with Chelsea isnt Terry, its the fact Chelsea have not been able to pick a regualr back four, if you think Terry is the liabilty what do you make of P.Ferriera?

On topic, I picked Vidic over Nani as I wanted a good CB to partner Terry and since I had Hart on goal that couldnt be Kompany.

    IMO, he really isn't.

Ferreira is, by a fúcking mile.

it's not coincidence that Alex's injury has coincided with the defence becoming leaky. you can point to that meaning Alex was holding it toegther, and even carrying Terry, but Ferreira having to come in is the problem IMO.

Terry gets blamed for an awful lot because he's a dislikeable character, but he's been excellent on an individual level i've thought whenever i've seen him.

nani is up for POTY so he has to be in there, hes been super and cannot be left out. bar one or 2 important/nice goals, tevez has not been anything special, he was poor in alot of games thus far.

i'm with you 100% on the first part man, it's just, on the face of it, and funny observation that the top scorers in the league don't make the vast majority of teams.

i think that's harsh on Tevez, but i suspect we'll have to agree to disagree. he's been excellent in the majority of games for City this year, and their one constant threat up front.

but Kompany has been that good, that i couldn't justify not putting him in as CB, otherwise Tevez would've been in, or de Jong at DM.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭Warper

Hart has been the standout goalie for me. Baines has been the best left-back but I also wanna have Tim Cahill in my team but cant.

Hart, Baines, VDV, Nani, Carroll and Nasri should be in most teams as they have been excellent.

I'm a Chelsea fan so I have absolutely no dislike for Terry. I also agree with many saying Ferrer, he is shocking. That said JT hasn't started the season well at all and I've no idea what people are seeing in him this year. Playing alongside Alex and Brana this year both have constantly gotten dragged out of position to try and cover mistakes made by Terry.

My idea defensive pairing at present is Alex and Brana, when both are fit of course.

    Nani
    Adam
    Bale
    Tevez

FFS. Twice I've been slated in this thread for my choices. It's my fcuking opinion.

Never mind the team these players are with. Look at the individual performances from some of the players I've picked and then you'll see why I picked them.

    FFS.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,361 ✭✭✭Boskowski

Well, these are the Fantasy Premier League top scorers according to your rules then...

I took the leading scorers from the top. If some club had players in more than one category I went again by top score. Say top goalie is Hart and top forward is Tevez. Hart has 103 points, Tevez has 114. So Tevez it is and the GK spot goes to the next in line. And so on.

    GK: Foster

    DEF: Hangeland, Elmohamady, Huth, Nelsen

MID: Nani, Cahill, Malouda, Van Der Vaart

    FWD: Tevez, Carroll

    to those picking Reina...

i know it's easy, because no other Liverpool player has played remotely well, but Reina has been well below his best this season, and there are definitely at least 2 or 3 keepers ahead of him on form.

but i do understand picking him; it gets a club out the way for the purposes of the game.

    :D

Fair enough it's your opinion but how on earth could you say that both N'Zogbia and Thomas have been better than Nasri?

    GK: Robinson
    DF: Cole Onuoha Kompany Baines

Whoever reckons Tevez is poor this season obviously isn't watching City games. Immense player. But so is Kompany.

Ah yeah. It is very confusing to keep track when making the team alright. The other arsenal player I thought you might have gone for was Sagna but Onuoha is a good shout too.

Had a shaky start to the season did Onuoha. His goal against Chelsea and his general performance that day really gave him a boost of confidence.

Tough one to think of,midfield wouldn't be very defensive minded and I think Onuoha is more of a center back but seen him play full back for City before.Should of included with team of the half season, manager of the half season my choice would been Ian Holloway :).
