Does anyone know of a good gym in Cork City? I've just moved and I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the Jan offers!

what are you looking for in a gym - i.e. free weights, cardio equipment, pool / sauna?

All of the above plus if anyone knows of one that has some challenging classes and a good range of those as well ie toning & cardio

try NRG maybe or mardyke if you dont mind it being a bit crowded in the evenings. there is a great place in ballincollig too, dennehys health and fitness, lots of classes and great selection of free weights but no pool unfortunately

    where do you live?

the gym in the silver springs hotel has it all- although i'm sure it's far from the cheapest.. i was a member there when i lived in cork and it's got everything, including a gorgeous 25m pool, jacuzzi etc..

    www.sourcehealthandfitness.com

handy for anyone living on the northside/glanmire/montenotte etc..

jurys in town has a great gym too- great classes and again, a pool..

    http://www.nrgfitness.ie

again, probably not the cheapest but very central, and loads of great classes.

my advice is to chose location and class listings over price. No point in going for a cheap place if the classes are ****, and you wont go as it's too far away.. my gym is 300 yrds from the gaff and even though it's more expensive than the place 2 miles down the road- i go way more..

I've been to NRG Fitness in Jurys Hotel and it's excellent.

Anyone have any idea when the Kingsley is reopening?

not any time soon i'd say, which is a shame. afaik their insurance claim was rejected, is that right? if that's the case i'm sure they'll find it impossible to get funding from the banks... according to their blog as at a few weeks ago, still no confirmed reopening date. check out their facebook page- i cant get into facebook in work, but it looks like there might be some updates there

was never in their gym but apparently it was pretty top class!

The free weights section in the gym was shockingly poor. One tiny corner in the gym for it, only enough room for 3/4 people max & no squat rack or Barbell in sight. The rest of the gym was super. Plenty of cardio & weight machines and great pool & outdoor pool as well, but the worst free weight section I've ever seen in a gym.

Cheers for all the info I'm going to call into both this evening to get a feel for each of them. Staff, change rooms, other members ;) etc.

2nd (3rd?) NRG as well, nice size, good staff, classes included, and good opening hours.
Bit of a social side to it as well, Tag rugby in the summer & a running club as well.

the kingsley is meant to be re-opening in Feb..im not sure this is the right place for potentially libellous speculation about rejection of insurance claims tbh

NRG doesn't have a squat rack.
