    Mine's forever doing this :\

When a call eventually goes thru, I spend the next minute or two roaring into the phone asking can the other person hear me! The reception is absolute gank.

Has been happening to me too for the past 3 weeks...

Are you all using iPhone 4's? Do you have covers on them?

Or are you all death gripping them by any chance?

"Fail Call"? Hardly sounds like English to me and therefore suspect. "Call Failed" is what I see, occasionally, but not on any regular basis.

Happens to me alot too. Vodefone also.

Ive just started a thread on this. About to drop my phone in tomorrow to get my third handset off Vodafone.

This is very annoying. Are you guys all just putting up with this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 272 ✭✭byrybak

do they give u new phone straight away or send ur one for repair?
i dont thing its vodafone fault, it never happened with 4.1 firmware

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 91 ✭✭southernstar

It was sent for repair and first time around they gave me a brand new phone. Next time the repair guys reset the software (!). This has been constant since a couple of weeks before Christmas. Ive been into the shop 6 or 7 times now about it, had the network tests etc. It is something with the phone.

Apple guarantee the product for 90 days - I cant use it the way it is. I asked today could I switch to an android - I have a problem with being locked into 18 months using this phone if it stays like this. Sounds like this isn't an isolated problem from what other people here are saying.

I'm interested in other peoples experiences with this .

It does seem to be limited to Vodafone? I'm on 3 and no problems.

Am not experiencing any such problems.

It happens at home for me. There's crap coverage there for all operators. When I make the call I'll see full service, but then the bars will drop rapidly and "No Service" followed by "Call Failed".

Works fine when I ring back and it's never happened outside of the house, so I'm chalking it down to coverage.

The girl in the vodafone store blamed coverage - she said that she has an iPhone which she doesnt even bother using in Douglas cos she knows she'll get call failed - but that it works fine in other places.

I dont know though - we can use other phone types here no problem and the network people at Vodafone weren't able to find any problems with the network when I had my dropped calls tested.

Someone else has suggested its a software upgrade- surely other networks would be affected too if it was ios?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,190 ✭✭✭✭seamus

I'm on 3 BTW, so it could be affecting all operators but it only presents when the coverage is very poor.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

I'm bringing mine back at the weekend. At least 50% of my calls are failing.

It looks like I have coverage when I make them but the bars are dropping off quickly then. As it's only since the last update hopefully there will be a fix soon.

After 4 dropped calls this morning on the 4G I've been talking on my old 3GS all day no problem. I'm so used to calls dropping that I was paranoid today when there was any type of silence during calls. Its an awful thing to get used to.

    Hi Guys,

my partner was having these problems with his iphone4 on vodafone, i have a 3gs on vodafone i do not have this problem, my sister has an iphone 4 on o2 and does not have this problem, it seems to be exclusive to the vodafone network on the iphone 4...

    Hiya folks,
We've escalated this internally, but just to confirm something, could those of you affected let us know:
    a) what network you're with
    b) what firmware version is on your phone
    c) what model iphone you have
    d) whether these issues appeared to start after updating firmware

We've noted a couple of other customers have updated to 4.2.1 and started having issues, so we need to see if there's something in this update that's a possible cause.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,563 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

I've been having a lot of "Call Failed" problems recently (before reading this thread I'd been blaming the wife for leaving her 3GS in the snow for an hour). Obviously the problem is with me.

    Darren,

I have an iPhone 4 (running 4.2.1) with Vodafone since launch day 2010. My Call Failed issues have only been quite recent (week or two), although I updated my firmware in November - or whenever it came out.

    c) iPhone 4
    d) Definitely after the last update

Yep iP4 on three with the latest (4.2.1?).

I didn't link it, but the problem has definitely only started occuring since the last update.

And as I said, it only tends to occur when coverage is already weak (though the phone often reports full coverage before failing).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 91 ✭✭southernstar

    a) Vodafone
    b)4.2.1
    c) 4G-unusable; 3GS- absolutely fine - both on 4.2.1, same location
    d) Started end of first week of December. Not sure when update happened. No probs at all before that.

Still no solution to the problem.. Iphone is going in the kitchen drawer the minute i get my hands on another phone..

Have rang Vodafone numerous times but nobody will call me back..

Asked about cancelling my contract and was told it'll cost me €400ish..

    Brilliant..

    Hiya,
We've escalated this to Apple, so we're awaiting further information on the next steps.
This doesn't appear (from the information posted so far) to be an issue that is related to us as a network provider, so leaving the contract would incur the standard penalties.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22 raycah1

    A) Vodafone
    B) 4.2.1
    C) Iphone 4
    D) Having the same issue but it only started last week so I dont think it has anything to do with the firmware update as I got that the day it was released. My phone goes from no service to 3 bars at home dropping calls as it loses the service.Missed 2 important calls yesterday only got the missed call 2 hours after they were sent. also having the same issue connecting Ipad to to the internet - broadband and sim card with vodafone.

    yeah!
my other half was around the rochestown area when his call failed's have happened, also around the douglas area too.

Thanks for escalating this Darren - good to hear that you and Apple are talking about this.

If I get another phone - or the same phone - not working and you guys wont give me an alternative handset I will be taking legal advice on this. Surely Vodafones part of the contract is to provide a phone/ service that actually works? If you cant deliver this how could you impose penalties?

If Vodafone believes the problem is with the phone Vodafone should get a refund from apple - their warranty should still in effect for my handset. As I've said I have had two handsets at this stage.

    A) Vodafone
    B) 4.2.1
    C) iphone 4
    D) new phone as of last week - in douglas area of Cork.

I was all excited with the new phone and now it sucks. Have had 'Call Failed' constantly since I got the phone few days ago. It happens over and over again, even when I call people back it drops again. I'm going back to shop as this is a joke.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 91 ✭✭southernstar

Well I've just received my THIRD new iPhone4 handset from Vodafone.

First call went fine. Fingers crossed.

The repair service is very good - they are standing over the phone.

I'll update if I get problems with this one.

2 dropped calls out of the last 3.

Anyone on another network want to buy a brand new iphone 4?

    Hey,

I called vodafone today and was told to try and reset network settings on the phone (general -> reset -> reset network settings). Has anyone tried this? Also, they told me disable 3G so phone works on 2G but not sure what will make a difference. It seems like I should have went for the HTC after all!!!

Have done all of that, had the network people investigate it, changed the sim card twice. Theres some problem there that they cant identify or fix.

You can still change it for a new model - i.e. HTC if within 28 days of purchase. I would look at this option if I were you.

Its amazing, anytime I contact Vodafone the first thing they tell me is that its not a network issue..When i rang apple I was told its not a handset issue...

This is complete and utter BS at this stage..

Im paying my bill, not getting the service im paying for and nobody can offer me a solution to the problem..

Its pushing on two months now..

What i dont understand is why my phone worked perfectly in America in December but not here..

i had 3 iphone 4 over the pass 3months ,and i did the same thing as described by every one here ,the truth is the iphone4 is a bad unit for signal (unless your in dublin or one of the major cites ) you will always have problems with droped calls etc .do your self a favor and get rid of it and buy a 3gs phone .
just for info im on the vodafone network and live in kildare.
do what i did ring vodafone and tell them THE UNIT YOU WERE SOLD IS UNSUITABLE FOR THE AERA YOU LIVE IN and you want a full refund ,work for me , might have to get a little rude with them and tell them you got legal advice

Might be true for you, but I've been all over the country with my launch iPhone 4 and have only had one area that has had no signal. I've no problems at all with reception
