Called in the receivers apparently, Ivan Yates just on Newstalk, looking for a fire sale of shops. Could be the start of a bad year for Independents.

    More than trouble, in receivership.

For clarity, are we assume that you mean the bookies chain and not the football club?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

erm this is a betting/gambling forum and Ivan Yates does not own Celtic fc.

All outstanding bets will be honoured.

I can't see too many people having a bet with them now.
    €6 million in debt!

I could see it coming unfortunately.
They closed their Phone service last month.
Where I am there is a PP, Boyles and Celtic next door to each other and Celtic are by far the quietst even though they have good specials. There is something very dreary about their shops. I often do my bets in Celtic but go to one of the other places to watch the races.
Sad loss. Nice staff and a sound owner as far as bookies go.

I mean they never got into the internet side of things, plus there shops are dreary, they could of survived if they had put more thought and work into it like boylesports have with virtual roulette.

What were the odds on that happening?
    Sad for the staff though!!

I wonder how much he will sell his shop in prospect hill in Galway for, great location and im sure another bookies will snap it up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,241 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

Not sure if he owns that one. Bit too much opposition there for another bookie to move in. Ladbrokes closed their shop there last year as well.

Yeah but it is where all the gamblers concentrate in Galway, if someone redone up the shop and made it into a luxury bookies you would make a killing.

Was in today to cash out a couple of old slips. He left me 3.50 short but I didnt have the heart to dispute it. Normally if there is even 20cent out I get them to check. I really feel sorry for the staff. Lets hope it sells.

Afaik they have already sold their 2 best shops, 1 to Boyles and 1 to Paddy Powers.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,096 ✭✭✭✭the groutch

with Hills closing half their shops too, Blackrock could end up with no bookies for Cheltenham

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 12,333 ✭✭✭✭JONJO THE MISER

Look at boylesports they are doing better than Paddy Power on the high street, they have luxury shops and are expanding with force, they have 4 shops now in Killarney a town of 10,000:eek:.
There still behind powers on the internet market.

They have lost two CEO's within a year due to "personal reasons" and have been laying off staff in head office.

They have taken a bold, costly approach over the previous few years but they are struggly by all accounts. Retail gambling turnover on the whole is on a downward spiral.

What type of overheads are shops in Ireland looking at ?
It's hardly less than €1,000 a week I would imagine...

As mentioned earlier in the thread no great surprise to see Celtic gonzki

As for Boylesports, they are such a weak bookmaker targetting the micro stakes players it is difficult to see them giving PP any type of run for there money. It would be interesting to compare turnover between these two firms shops

Boylesports are making huge turnover since they started doing virtual roulette, the chinesse are putting serious money on it.

    And that's with 2 Zero's

    turnover ≠ profit

Define huge turnover? Virtual roulette will be a tiny percentage of their revenue.

As a company they have taken a number of retroactive steps in the last 12 months due to declining profits. Too many of their shops were bought/leased at the boom and it means they are have a massive overhead in a retracting retail market.

As an independant, I have a lot of repect for the business they built but all indicators are they are in trouble.

That shop in Prospect Hill is a disaster; absolutely no business in there. Boyles have most of the business there with Powers hoovering up the rest.

    spot on

and Ladbrokes closed across the road a few months back too because of this, Fahy's (indo who always had the best prices) closed lately, and Mullhollands went too, all in 5 min walk from Boyles and Powers.

Fahy's is a major loss, he would beat most prices quoted by the major bookies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,632 ✭✭✭✭okidoki987

    Maybe that's why he closed?

Heard Celtic guaranteed Prices in multiples which would be insane if it's true?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,853 ✭✭✭Kod-box

PP guarantee prices on multiples dont they?

Fahy closed that shop because of a rent increase i think, ridiculous to be raising rent in this climate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,853 ✭✭✭Kod-box

Close the pubs and offies too sure, put a stop to alcoholics

boylesports actually put up a new site in the last year or so and its useless i tend to still use the orginal site classic.boylesports.com or boylesportssafc.com. there better then the new site but still bad

Attn GALWAY readers: Brian Fahy bookies is NOT closed.
I normally do my golf bets there but used PP today after reading that they were gone on this thread. Was walking past Fahys later and it is wide open.
Spreading rumours like that is a sure fire way of putting a place out of business.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,853 ✭✭✭Kod-box

Yeah i only found that out myself today, theyre gone as soon as the lease is up though, just that shop, the one in Knocknacarra and wherever else will still be operating.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,241 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

It actually turned out for the best for them as regards my bets lol. I backed Wilson and Clark for the Sony. Felt happier taking it off Powers tbh.

Where is Fahy's shop? I used to do most of my bets in Celtic, mostly online now.
And Celtic don't do gauranteed prices on all multiples as questioned by someone in the thread,it's on about 6 specific races a day, usually the wide open handicaps.

Fahys is beside Hughes Pub. They are good for golf especially as they usually pay an extra place. He used also pay double/triple if first goalscorer got 2/3. Not sure if he still does.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,335 ✭✭✭✭UrbanSea

Sorry for being slow but where's Hughes' pub? Say in relation to the other bookies on Prospect Hill there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,241 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

Lol. You must be stuck in the Square. Its down Woodquay across from where Harvest Offie was. Near Stage Door. About 30 seconds from Ladbrokes.

In fairness reading Celtic3x post anyone would make that pessumtion.

Celticx3 where did you hear that information?

Anyone that had taken the time to read Urbansea's post before my comment, would have known they are re -opening. there is a small amount that may not re open fully. It was for this small amount of shop Punters,i was letting no.

I was in 2 different ladbrokes Branches yesterday, an had seen this on an a4 page on the wall in one of the Branches.I no noting about celtic bookmakers closing our re-opening,apart from Urbansea's post.

I was just letting any fella with a winning docket no that he has options.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,335 ✭✭✭✭UrbanSea

It said that the shops closing down will reopen for one day to honour bets. Doesn't say when though.
