For anyone suffering from rock solid shin muscles after getting back into running or from starting out, I found out something really effective recently as I couldn't run because of the ice.

After your run, walk on the outside of your runners for about 50 yards and you'll soon notice your shin muscles relax very quickly. So what you're doing is the same as is illustrated in picture for the right foot.
