    Why?

According to all information I've read, it's exclusive to Sky only.

Sky have indicated to date that Sky Atlantic shall be exclusive to Sky customers only ie not on cable.

I would not get my hope up abput this station appearing until there is official confirmation from UPC.

This time last year there was 'confirmation' of Good Food / Yesterday / Watch etc all appearing and ultimately these stations never materialised on UPC.

Admitadly Sky have run adverts saying Sky Atlantic is exclusive to Sky Digital, but that doesn't mean a carriage deal with UPC (or with Virgin in the UK) won't happen in the future. Oftimes these deals are agreed very close to the channel's launch. US programming is not really a driver for pay-TV takeup and given people do have other options (wait for terrestrial, buy the DVD) I can't see it being the primary reason to pick Sky over UPC (in the same way a sports fan might for instance pick Sky over UPC because of the availablity of Sky Sports HD, for instance).

    ah well.

I assume that Virgin have access to Sky Atlantic due to the deal they did with Virgin for their set of the Channels, UPC on the other hand maybe left out in the cold.

I will look forward to Challenge in Feb more so that Sky Atlantic. :(

Elmo, There has been no announcement that suggests that Virgin or any other non- sky provider will get access to this channel.

Well Virgin really aren't getting a good deal. Part of the sale of VMTV included the provision of Sky HD channels on the Virgin network. Sky Atlantic is a HD channel, no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 303 ✭✭deanh

does anyone ever get a good deal dealing with Sly? On Virgin, you have to pay a top-up sub (£7 a month) to get sky hd but not all channels are available. Hell will freeze over before these are available on U.P.C.

This new channel was announced after that deal with Virgin Media.

Yeah but surely Virgin had a good idea as to what Sky where planning with their channels when they sold them. Anyway we will see what happens in Feb. IMO it's a bit anti-competitive.

Of course its anti-competitive and it amazes me how they have got away with it for so long. There is a flaw with one company being both a platform and content provider.

Neither BT Vision or Virgin are getting this channel. Talks were held, but no agreements yet. I wonder if UPC bothered having talks. I wonder if UPC even realise the channel is launching.....

Why do people find this so hard to grasp. It is a Sky channel being billed as exclusive to Sky, why would any other brand get it?

Besides it is only a bunch of repeats with one or two shows I am sure are on RTE or TV3/TG4.

nope... all the programs are exclusive uk and ireland rights... entourage etc which was on rte will now have all new series on sky atlantic only...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭patrickmooney

Agree, it has nothing of interest to me, but I'm sure you will find getting additional carriage soon...

HBO make some of the best drama on TV - hardly 'a bunch of repeats' as you put it.

When Sky refer to SKY Atlantic HD, they mean both the SD and HD channel will be only available on Sky, they refer to all the channels by their HD label, ie 'Sky1 HD' to promote HD as a standard.

I would agree only as pointed out Sky have an exclusive deal with HBO over the next 3 years which means that Sky Atlantic will effectively take away Terrestrial and Cable access to shows which are currently on such channels such as True Blood.

Sky 1, Sky Living and Sky Atlantic are all going to be aimed at attracting audience to basic pay TV, to do this they will need to provide stronger programming. I imagine that Sky will seek a stronger pay option on DTT in the UK in the coming years.

I think Sky should really think about allowing other pay companies provide their pay service otherwise their campaign against FTA TV will fail, not that I am a supporter of such a campaign but if I do decide to let go of my UPC connection it will be for Saorview and FTA satellite.

Access to Sky Atlantic for the 375,000 digital television subscribers to UPC Ireland, on the other hand, has yet to be confirmed. Indeed, when I contacted UPC earlier this week, its product team said this: “It is under review with the channel provider. Until discussions conclude, we’re not in a position to comment any further.”

Fingers crossed for UPC, you never know.

Big splash for Sky Atlantic in todays Sunday Tribune.

The article quotes a spokeswoman for Sky that Sky Atlantic will be exclusive to its customers only.

Additionally from the article it seems that no 'commercial' discussions have taken place with UPC.

On other forums there is talk of the channel only being 'freely' available to Sky customers for the first 6 months - though I can't see Sky giving a pay channel such a high EPG position ??

They will need to recoup their £150m outlay somehow.

Hold on to subscribers and gain subscribers at the cost of other platform providers.

It is available to all Sky subscribers for 6 months and then to only those with the Variety package (Sky One, Living etc.), which is probably most.

Sky do say it will be exclusive to Sky so it is unlikely to be on UPC at the beginning.

I'd say if us on UPC do get it, it will be in august when sky start charging their own customers for it, at that point they will have suckered enough people into subscribing thinking it will always be a free channel. I think it will be an extra €2 a month on the variety package. cant find the link now :(

Very few Sky subscribers will be paying anything extra as it will be available to anyone on Sky with Sky One. I imagine that is most Sky subscribers.

carefully reading their advertising shows it will only be free for 6 months. It is unlikely to be available on other platforms before then.

I have no figures to support it but antedoctocally, very few Sky subscribers do not take the Variety pack. It contains all the general entertainment channels which are usually among the core reasons people take pay-TV.

Yes. That's why very few people will be affected by the change to Variety only in six months.

Anna-Marie Barry, UPC's press spokesperson, held out hope in today's Indo that it may yet arrive on UPC.

    Moved to Cable.

She's holding out hope but probably not basing that hope on anything concrete. Sky are running a big campaign with their 'exclusivity' being a big selling point so I'd be surprised if UPC got it.

There was a sky spokesperson on Newstalk earlier saying they are open to offers but it would need to be a good offer.

Also I think i heard that once the 6 months is over and the channel is only available on the variety pack, that the cost of that pack would go up by €2. The channel looks good, but not sure if i'd want to pay extra for it.

Most Sky subscribers have that package anyway so the price would go up for very few.

On NewsTalk yesterday there was an interview with the Sky Program Manager (I think that was his title). he was saying that they hoped UPC would get Sky Atlantic but they were working on the costings of it. So guess depends if UPC decide its worth paying for.

He also mentioned that only 2% of Sky customers were not on the variety pack.
