I would not recommend getting one from China. I bought a dm 500 from a factory shop in China two weeks ago. It cost €50. But I got caught at customs and had to pay €17 there. Then when the box came i had to pay €7 for a UK plug adapter bringing the cost of the dreambox to €75. Also that company mentioned above the Chinese one does not include.postage costs. And if you buy in China respite companies telling you that you have a 12 month guarantee. It is illegal to send electrical goods into China.

Yup have heard about the sending electronics back being a bit of a balls alright!

I don't know i'm thinking of saving up and going for a dm800hd off them...

Delivery is €27 to Ireland last time i checked and as you say prob get caught by customs too!

Ya it works out at €172 altogether with postage and some sort of tax. Could get caught by customs but i may take the risk, iv got stuff from china before and not been charged anything by customs.

I've purchased from him, no problems and at least if there's a problem you don't have to send it to china

    Mossy

You have two free delivery options,EMS or DHL Express.
Probable better chance with customs on EMS,although slower I would imagine.Even paying the customs, still looking at 190-195euro,not bad compared to the price of an original.

Comes with the internal fan and this should suffice.

    Thanks for the replies.

One question, whats the best way to flash the dm800hd with an image? The same as DM500s with a null modem cable or can it be done over ethernet cable?

@ubuntulinux Also, how long around for delivery from this guy on aliexpress?

    Cheers

Either way. Get yourself a clone friendly version of Dreamup and you can flash it no problem. The quickest is via a network connection. Plug your DM into your router (or whatever is acting as DHCP server) and hold the power button in until *STOP* appears on the front. Your DM will poll for an IP address and show what it got on the LCD screen. You can now put that address into your browser and near the bottom of the screen you will see an option to update firmware(or similar).

Dreamup can flash over the network too, just select that option when running it. Otherwise the serial transfer will work but can take about an hour.

BTW, I have 3 DM clones and I am going to replace them slowly. There are not the best in my opinion. The internal fan was not enough to keep my 800's cool when I installed a hard drive. I have a laptop cooler mat on both my boxes (the 3rd on is a 500) to keep them cool. I have been through most images and settle on DE and BH prior to it. I also had to add an inline amp for the break issues with the tuners, even though I replaced the tuner with an original. Updated drivers didn't help. Generally I just find them buggy. Crash logs generated most nights when doing EPG update, breakup when playback and record together etc, etc. I will be getting a VU+ soon.

I'm using dream elite phoneix edition for my dm800, I find it very stable. I've got one of the newer 800's with the m type tuner.

Box came yesterday. Very fast from China as I only ordered it last thursday.

Set it up today and its a great little box.

Tends to be a little slow to react though, for example when I press the menu button it takes a few seconds to appear.

Not sure if thats my box or if they are all like this.

It gets very hot as well so I am definitely going to get some cooling for it.

Think that responsive thing is a problem in all!

Have heard of guys moving the infrared receiver into the gap provided properly before to try and fix that!

    Were you caught for customs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,146 ✭✭✭mossy464

Nope, wasnt caught for customs :)

A complete bargain really. Only €165 altogether. Very happy with the purchase so far.

They only valued it at $30 and not sure what they wrote on the package but I will check later. It wasnt gift anyway.

    Repair tv tuner????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57 ✭✭duckndive

Repaired TV tuner is what they write on some packages to allow for a "smaller" value. And thus you may not be charged the additional cost.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,146 ✭✭✭mossy464

Cheers, wasnt sure what he meant.

The box seems to be pretty good quality, only time will tell though how good it is.

Really happy with it so far though. Left the GP image on it that the seller had loaded and just got it up and running with that.

So far anyway its not buggy at all, my dm500 is really buggy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57 ✭✭duckndive

Best of luck with it and hope you enjoy your new toy :)

GP is fine but the fun is in experimenting with different images, however if it ain't broke don't fix it can apply.

TBH the DM500 is still a great budget box and does what it says on the tin. The image I find most stable is PLi but as with all STBs they differ from clone to clone even when purchased from the same source and so you will only find the best/most stable image for it by trying a few as always.

Thanks for the update on your purchase. I may take a look at this supplier as I am thinking of buying another DM800.
