In not really a fan of the ZS/45 from that era. The ZT/75 is a much better looking car. You could probably get a diesel 75 for similar money.

Is that diesel engine the L series Rover one if its not the BMW diesel from the 75?

You'd be better off finding one with decent wheels no it, those ones are off a bogo rover. the l series is a decent yoke, decat and a boost increase will see 130 bhp for free if you gut the cat. Main issue no these is the fuel pumps are not an uncommon failure. Not pleasant if you need one over here unless you are close to an ex dealer who still looks after them from what I can gather. You would get an 05 for not much more which is face lifted and looks much better.

    Great car.

Much cheaper to repair and maintain than a 75/ZT

On a side note that one has the wrong alloys fitted, they are from a 45 low spec I think

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

I was going to say the same thing as RJ on the wheels, horrible looking and from a 45.

The 05 shape is 200 times nicer than that too. I'd be scraping the extra few bob together and going for a 75/ZT

I was looking to get a Mg Zr before I got my Fabia Vrs.It had alot going for it, lightweight, very reliable diesel engine, cheap, good handling and it mapped well ( to about 140bhp )

I think that ZS is a good deal, fine diesel for the price.2700e and 300e map and you have a very decent 04, 135bhp+, reliable, quick and economical diesel. You wouldn't get much of a VW for that and that Rover engine is suppose to be bulletproof, on the mg/rover forums they actually seem to prefer that engine to the bmw diesel in the 75 reliability wise anyway ( though the bmw engine in the 75 has a mitsubishi turbo which doesnt blow like the one in the 3 series bmw )

Yeah, should have the hairpins alloys. Blue is the only colour I'd go for.
Have to nct and sell my own first..

    no front lip
    no rear lip
    no side skirts
    no spots
    no 'MG' alloys
    no leather interior
    comedy ride height

i know the lip kit wasnt standard, but most specified it as an option, it 'should' have leather, lowered suspension and 'MG' alloys

i'd strongly believe its a replica someone has built around a 45 diesel but the DVLA reg check cant confirm it at the moment though.

Quite likely, I hadn't clicked on the link before, the seats should be half leather, weird for them to be described as fabric. May well be a 45 in drag. Although 45s didn't come in that colour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

I don't thinnk that blue was standard on the 45's, can't imagine someone would go that far. I'd say it's just a completely boggo spec

I reckon the ride height looks looney due to the 15s, probably 185 55 15 at best, the ZSs came with 17s me thinks with minimally 215 45 17s on them. Not possible to make out from the pics if the seats are the MG ones or not, all MG ZSs had half leathers so no boggo spec ones out there. That particular one looks really sh1t though, although I don't like them anyway really lookswise, the facelifted ones I think are a beauty though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

If you look at the drivers seat from the front pic that bolster there look a bit shiny, and they were half leather, so maybe that's the case!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

MG ZS + models Additional Specification over MG ZS Models CFC-free on/off air conditioning including pollen filter Electric front windows with driver’s one shot open 4 x 50W Kenwood CD Tuner
Leather covered sports steering wheel with MG badge

Think the half leather and stuff was only on the facelifts
That color is only on the mg I think

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,412 ✭✭✭andyseadog

well, no matter what the outcome, be it a 45 which has had some extras fitted, or an absolutely poverty spec ZS, i think either way there would be better examples available.

you could ask a few opinions on www.forums.mg-rover.org someone might even know/ own the car, its a great site. i've been a member a while now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 759 ✭✭✭ltdslipdiff

I'd avoid this one, by the looks of it, that hitch has the twin-charging plug (seen in pic in white) which can only mean one thing......long hard miles towing a caravan !!!!

I'm open to correction, but I don't think I've ever seen any of the MG range without at least half leather seats.

It is indeed. Rover 45 customers would have been far too dowdy for that colour.

The Rover 45/MG ZS also had the benefit of being one of the lesser affected models by Project Drive.

Go for a ZT, you'll regret not getting it everytime you pass one by in your ZS.
    I wouldn't mind a facelift ZS180 saloon(hatches are yuck), but they still aren't a patch on a nicely specced ZT :)

Have had a bunch of random neighbours and locals come up to me and ask me what happened to the lovely red car I had since I got rid of my solar red mk1 ZT.
Would love a facelift ZT-T CDTi as a main car, still gutted I missed out on a 2005 ex-directors ztt ctdi with every single factory option because VRT crowd took 2 weeks to give me a figure :/

Yea mate not the best looking mg tbh.
I wouldn't be surprised if they were standard 45 14"wheels.
If someome took a zs grill and badge from a breakers and stook them on 45 it would look like that picture.
Best colours in the 2001-2004 zs i always thought were black and racing green.
The facelift is a pretty car in any colour and dates much better although people say the electrics are iffy.
That silver zt that someone posted with 80k on the clock looks a good un . But nothing about a cambelt change .

It's definitely an MG ZS and not a specced up Rover 45.

anyone got any opinions on the mg zt cdti.
are they reliable ,expensive to fix if anything goes wrong?
for the money they are a really nice car compared to the more common overpriced jap , german cars seen everywhere.

Talk to Tragedy he had a 2003 one he imported.

I test drove it when he was selling it and I would certainly say it was a nice car with good handling. Very different to look at and all.

At that mileage with a manual check th clutch, service history, maf and turbo although the turbo is more reliable than the BMW unit.

    Expensive considering year and mileage.
Also ad states " Full service history including record of cambelt change."
Diesel doesn't have a cambelt, so I'd run a mile from that particular one.

Make sure you get the + version(trip computer, parking sensors, automatic wipers) and try go for one with 1/2 leather & alcantara interior. Clutches on them tend to go between 80,000 and 100,000, my old one is up to 100,000 on original clutch despite remap though!

As someone said above thats not a ZS its a dolled up standard 45 diesel :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

    How do you know?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,056 ✭✭✭Tragedy

If it's a dolled up 45 diesel he:
    Resprayed whole car
    Got new front+rear bumpers
Got new bootlid with spoiler and MG badge
Reregistered it as a ZS with DVLA(is that even possible?)

    Thats what one looks like

The blue one is the exact same bar the wheels!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,309 ✭✭✭VolvoMan

The reason that looks different is because it is the pre-facelift model.

Both look the same to me bar the indicators and the hairpins (and the colour obviously)

My late father had a 400 and considered a 45 - cripes - about 15 years ago. I just can't get my head around an ancient, re-badged Honda as a viable car, whatever the bangernomic credentials...

I WOULD consider a ZT though, they are quite unique and a genuine future classic I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

A friend of mine bought a Rover 400 back in the day, said they were a fantastic car.

He went about trading it in and everyone said the same thing " What have you - A Rover - no thanks"

So eventually spotted an Audi he liked, test drove, wanted to buy and same story, it was a Rover. He walked out of the showroom, stopped, turned back and went in and said "Everyone has a price, just name it"

Lost his arse, got his Audi!

MG ZS is one of the best handling fwd cars out of the box ever.
They have been out of production for 6 years now. I don't see what's not viable about them, a ZS diesel will p1ss all over a NEW Focus diesel so it really is quite viable ;) It also is direct injection, no DPF no DMF and won't cook it's own turbo if serviced routinely.

Your Dad wouldn't have been considering a 45 15 years ago, the 400 (HHR) was launched in 1995.

    OP,

I know this is petrol but its been there for ages.

I'd say if you haggled they would sell it cheap.

KCGARAGES had a nice Silver one about 18months ago or more, sadly someone was on crack when they plucked the price out of the sky. Similarly they done the same on a ZT-T when I was shopping

Strangely I'm still bitter about it

Its lurvley . I have a low specced facelift 45 hatch , low milage, great car but manky dated charcoal seats that were stained and slightly burned when i got the car.
I love some of the seat trims on those zs's and been looking out for a scrappy that has one for quite a while as i hear the interior is a straight swap. No joy.
Anyone ever locates one... gives me a pm thankyou please!
