What popular programmes do you not like?

I've watched a couple of full episodes of South Park and I've seen parts of other episodes. I just don't get the appeal. It just seems to be more about being controversial than about being funny.

Another one I don't get is Family Guy. It just seems like a rip off of The Simpsons with all the humour removed (not that The Simpsons is funny anymore either).

Then there's The Royle Family. I find it unbelievably dull.

Are there any popular programmes that you don't understand the appeal of? I'm not talking about things like The X Factor. I'm talking about programmes that are rarely criticised and that everyone else seem to love.

The Simpsons went downhill a long, long time ago. And that's not just me getting older

Releasing the film in the cinema was the perfect time to wrap it up
    But they didn't

    Two & a Half Men

Why is it so popular? Why do the cast make so much money? WHYYY

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,814 ✭✭✭Nemanja91

I used to love South Park when I was around 10 or 11 but now at 19 I can't even watch a full episode. I also hate Glee.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 699 ✭✭✭ashyle

    Modern Family

When my friends profess their love for it, I immediately slap them and point them in the direction of Arrested Development.

    Winning streak!

What's the point just give them a Random amount of money between 10,000 and 35,000 euros
    Painful

I agree with all of these(bar Modern Family), but South Park just annoys me so much nowadays, first post hit the nail on the head about it.
I usually hate crime dramas that overly dramatise things, you know Criminal minds, the csis and all that other bull****.
Glee, it's as if it intended to parody high school musical and such but then thought..hmm..Money's good, let's just stick to their formula...plus the god awful music makes me want drive the nearest sharp object between my ears.

    Each and every soap.
Two and a Half Men - I have tried watching this with my housemates, who absolutely love it. I don't think I've once seen or heard them laugh during it.
    Any of those celebrity shows.

    Never liked Lost or Firefly..
Hate all the soaps as well.

EDIT - The wire also, just bored the hell out of me...

I think soap could possibly be in there with X Factor, often criticized.

South Park has its moments and is often very up to date, more of an american satire than a cartoon, it dates year to year.

Family Guy, American Dad and The Cleveland Show are dreadful. They completely copying themselves. A dog in Family Guy, an Alien in American Dad and a Bear in Cleveland. All seem very similar to when the Simpson brought in an alien for the Mock "Behind the Laughter" episode.

Much of the current US shows are really badly acted and scripted, the cable services seem to be doing a great job.

Even The Closer is 10 times better than CSI, Criminal Minds etc.

    The Wire

Tried hard to get in to it, just don't like it.

    Get.
    Out. :pac:

I get why people dont, but its one of those thing you wish more people stuck with, as it doesnt truly show what it is until a good few episodes in, when you watch it as a whole its an incredible series.

Lost would be mine, thought the pilot was fantastic, but after that it just asked 5 questions and answered none every episode, became too convouluted for its own good and disappointed most of the people i knew that watched all of it.

All of the law and Order, CSI, Criminal Minds type crap.

I agree, probably my favourite programme. It's always described as being like a novel, but I think in terms of work it definetly is..You can't really watch it passively, because half of it will go over your head and you will get bored quickly, but once you put in the work it is an astonishing body of work.Treme is pretty good too.
Although I still watch it, I notice How I met Your Mother starting to Jump the Shark a bit nowadays.

It is what it is, it's stupid but it can be funny, i don't agree with the wages but it is the highest rated show on tv....and he has a good agent.

I bought the first series of The Wire, after hearing so much noise about it - & I thought it was rubbish. But I suppose I should persevere.

I don't get the big deal with Greys Anatomy & Deperate Housewives.

I love Criminal Minds and SVU - as you can just dip in and out of the series. They don't require a big commitment like Lost & Prison Break.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,598 ✭✭✭Saint_Mel

Totally forgot about American Dad and Cleavland Show. Utter tripe imho.

Actually another thread just reminded me of The Big Bang Theory ... tried 2 epidodes and thought it was rubbish. How I Met Your Mother is another one that hasnt floated my boat.

I used to be a fan of The Panel but havent watched in ages cos I thought it was going down the pan

top gear, i watched it these last 5 years religiously, but last year i just snapped and stopped watching, god the formula is so god damn old, and im sick of seeing these guys so much, its like george hook, he was funny with his comments on the rugby analysis, but then he sold out and his giant head keeps looking at me driving down the road, i hate sellouts

of the US shows i dont watch 30 rock, community and modern family,

i took 20 secs not to lke modern family, i just simply didnt like the way it was shot, and ive seen snippets since and still dont like the way its shot,

30 rock i dont get at all, i remeber i was looking forward to this and studio 60 a few years back, i dumped this one imediately, and i just didnt see any draw to coummnity at all,

I've only seen a couple of minutes of that but it seems to be a rip off of Malcom In The Middle. Even the youngest kid looks almost exactly the same as the kid from Malcolm In The Middle.

I can't stand Glee either or Desperate Housewives or Grey's Anatomy and its spinoff show.

House. Same format over and over.

    Lastly, 30 Rock.

I HATE Grey's anatomy, just looking at the ads for it have me depressed already... Jesus I wish I had been the one going through the hospital with the gun... Not one of the b*stards would have survived... though it's a distinct possibility that I might have used up all of my bullets on Patrick Dempsey...

So many to choose from but number one has to be Spartacus. Biggest load of rubbish I've seen in a long time.

    Honourable mention to Desperate Housewives.

Edit: Just read the thread and saw Ugly Betty is still being made. Worst show of the decade.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 18,184 ✭✭✭✭Lapin

RTE carry the Angelus on two of their radio stations twice a day and one of their television stations once a day, and they have done for decades, so it must be very popular.

I never got into it myself. I always found the lack of dialogue to be monotonous, the script never changes and the plot is the same at the start of the show as it is at the end.

Its not somethig I would rush home in the evening to watch or set my Sky Plus to record to sit back and watch later.

two and half men i use to watch the show and found it like school boy comedy but i just got sick of it. i hate the set and that alan lad eventually pissed me off and so did the lil chub chub guy and it was basically the same plot repeated and repeated kill it now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

It's a mad one but for me it was 24.

I like Kiefer Sutherland, Love the idea of the format and would watch any action film with a storyline from it's season. Jack Bauer is also a great character.

But, I watched 3 and half seasons and could never really say I enjoyed it. Also tried to watch the last one. Just no joy.

    Also quick picks are:

    Ugly Betty
    Two and a half men.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 460 ✭✭KeanSeenan

Something I've always found odd about the opening titles of Two and a Half Men is that Jake weirdly morphes into whatever age he is now from what he was when they orginaly shot it, it's done as obviously as possible too. You'd think they'd just re-shoot it given they spend $1.88 million on Sheen.

    QUOTE]

I completely understand how you would think it's rubbish.

Honestly, I found the first two series to be bloody hard work, not entertaining in the slightest.

However, if you can make it to the 3rd series the show really starts to take off. You start to notice the complex web being built up, which is essentially a city of connections, from the lowest drug addict all the way up to the highest politician.

I even took to reading up on episodes on Wikipedia after watching them, as I'd invariably end up missing a lot of things due to the drawn out pace of the episodes.

The second series is the worst of all of them. But trust me, if you make it to the third series it'll become a lot more rewarding from there on.

I really enjoyed the second season, it was my favourite for a while. But right now I'd say the fifth is my least favourite. It's great though, stick with it.

I should have mentioned I'm also interested in hearing what 'classic' programmes that people here don't like.

Personally I've never seen anything remotely funny about Monty Pythons Flying Circus.

I agree that CSI is usually terrible, but sometimes they do have some flashes of genius with regards to editing, especially the opening of this episode

+1 Glee. They get these amazing singers, yet dub all of their singing. It's ridiculous and made me stop watching it after the second episode.
