    Is "alot" a real word?
Or is it just that a lot of people get it wrong?

Its not a word, its an irritation though.

I see it more here than anywhere else. and it drives me crazy. Almost more than the inappropriate use of too, two, and to.

"alot" is a search engine (yes really)

alot is not an actual word in the english language.

ever notice the amount of people who confuse "to" and "too" - there are millions of them! one friend sent me a message on facebook tonight which said "injoy the new year"

I know that one really gets me. People are not educated in this country!
"I'm going two the pet shop two buy too alots, are you coming to?"
    Easy!

The lose/loose brigade are the worst.

Drives me mad? "You looser!!1!1" Looser than what? I think I should know so I can ascertain my level of insult. Than a nun? Grand, I can live with that. Than Paris Hilton after someone buys her something shiny? Oh hells no!

if Doh! can be counted in the english language through popular use then so can alot

    deal with it

The lose/loose brigade are the worst.

That one irritates me more than anything else. A person on Facebook (who is now hidden from my news feed) would always say the word loose instead of lose. Seriously, they are two different words. They sound nothing alike!

I mean if they would want to spell lose with two os then they would have to spell it looze from what I can see.

A 5 year old knows this!

"Doh!" is a word which was brought into modern usage by the Simpsons, a word previously unknown but now almost universally understood.

"Alot" is just bad spelling. You deal with it.

Isn't there a rule that if enough people are using a word that isn't actually a word it gets added to the dictionary???

    O ya sorry!
I'm not exactly sure but I remember hearing about the word "text" getting a new meaning in the dictionary when everyone started saying, "I'll text blahblah now...."
This would have been incorrect English before it was changed.

It's just short for "I will send a text to you", which makes perfect sense as that's what you're doing. You're forwarding a piece of text via SMS to someone.

Is the above placement of too not correct?

Googled - "Too" is used to denote something as excessive (too expensive, too young) or to indicate an addition (I want a puppy, too. We need milk, too).

Too or to always has me second guessing myself.

It really shouldn't. It's quite simple.
"I'm going two the pet shop two buy too alots, are you coming to?"
    Easy!
Remember the number 2 when written has too "o" in it.

It's not a real word. I've seen people join other random words together too; aswell, afew and atleast are three that spring to mind.

I think it's kind of sad that so many people can't spell and aren't even embarrassed about it.

A single "a" should also be written in caps.
"I like two eat A bowl or too of porridge in the morning, as it stops me getting to hungry during the day."
    :P

The way I think about it is that if I can use the word "also" then I can use the word "too" too! :D

No such word as 'alot' its a force of habit of some people to write it like that. It's 'A lot'! Took me years to realise I was writing it wrong, having learnt proper grammar I have become more aware of it!

Aswell used to always get me. I was sure one day that autocorrect was making a mistake.

This bugs the hell out of me. I remember a number of years ago having it out with a group of teachers about whether or not it was "a lot" or "alot". The group was split 50/50. When I got a dictionary to prove there was no such word as "alot", one teacher (from Galway) actually said, well it's in mine. Unbelievable! No wonder people's spelling/grammar is so bad when teachers don't have a clue!

What about people who use "ok" instead of "okay"?
Almost nobody ever says "okay" yet it's accepted.
