US May Retaliate Against the EU..

    http://wikileaks.ch/cable/2007/12/07PARIS4723.html
¶1. (C) Summary: Mission Paris recommends that that the USG reinforce
our negotiating position with the EU on agricultural biotechnology by
publishing a retaliation list when the extend "Reasonable Time
Period" expires. In our view, Europe is moving backwards not
forwards on this issue with France playing a leading role, along with
Austria, Italy and even the Commission. In France, the "Grenelle"
environment process is being implemented to circumvent science-based
decisions in favor of an assessment of the "common interest."
Combined with the precautionary principle, this is a precedent with
implications far beyond MON-810 BT corn cultivation. Moving to
retaliation will make clear that the current path has real costs to
EU interests and could help strengthen European pro-biotech voices.
In fact, the pro-biotech side in France -- including within the farm
union -- have told us retaliation is the only way to begin to begin
to turn this issue in France. End Summary.

    ...

¶6. Country team Paris recommends that we calibrate a target
retaliation list that causes some pain across the EU since this is a
collective responsibility, but that also focuses in part on the
worst culprits. The list should be measured rather than vicious and
must be sustainable over the long term, since we should not expect an
    early victory
    .

Remember, the key word is "may." Nothing has been confirmed, but the link is provided if you're curious; I recommend reading the full cable.

Wait - they're going to attack Europe?

From what I can gather, they're making a "retaliation list," albeit it's not entirely clear what exactly that means, it's clear that their intent is to, and I quote, "cause pain" if France does not comply with their demands.

This is a surreal New Years for me.

I'm sitting here reading about how the US may cause pain in the EU (whatever that means), listening to what sounds like absolute warfare outside, while sitting in what was the very last residence of the Nazi government, surrounded by Germans, as an ally, watching Hitler: The Rise of Evil. :pac:

The marijuana probably isn't helping the situation. :o

The cable is only listed as confidential. If it was anything serious, it would be top secret.

Way to panic Liah. The Cable refers to agricultural biotech. I presume they mean economic attacks. Not acts of military sabotage.

Not too much of a surprise. I would say that they would use even harsher methods with countries like China in order to correct the trade balance.

    b) I was just using the words used in the cable itself, if you'd care to read the article before saying I'm panicking. :p

Might not be such a bad thing if they did invade. They'd have to rebuild all the stuff they'd blow up so it could be the celtic tiger II.

I for one won't be making the same mistake again. No saving and living within my means for me. Fcuk fiscal prudency, it got me stuck back with my parents. I'm gonna get as much as I can and when it all goes to siht I'll wander off to Boston and file for bankruptcy. Simples.

If they actually wanted to take over and occupy Europe they'd be screwed. If they just wanted to obliterate Europe (i.e. blow stuff up) then we'd be screwed.

    Ahh, we'll be grand.
We have oil and gas off the West coast.
Uncle Sam will leave us alone if we cede the natural resources and tell them that we hate the French (even if it is for the pettiest reason known to man).

If they do invade, we'll just piss them off so much that they'll leave.
Nothing like corrupt politicians to get rid of invaders. I'm looking at your grave, DeValera.

This might be good for Ireland. We could sell Ireland to the US to use as a military base. We'll be kicked out from the EU anyways - just give it time. We might as well help the US fight the EU. If the worst comes to the worst we have the Aran Islands to hide out in.

    GTFO.
The Aran islands are mine when I win the Euro millions.

I'll be declaring independance and stocking up on old 'ra weapons from the shams in Limerick. Don't even think of coming near my new state.
