Not really a chat thread, just a thread where we can use as a reference point later on for the best matches of the year.

Try and put a youtube link if possible as well and your rating of it.

Lets weed out any dross immediately that if you feel it is any less than ***1/2 stars, do not post it.

    Timeframe is 1/1/11 - 31/12/11

Well I suppose I shall start.

    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xgf3ui_john-morrison-vs-the-miz_sport

Jo Mo v The Miz the other night on Raw. The outcome was never in doubt but it was a really fun match and Jo Mo worked his arse off.

    7/10

I liked Miz Morrison from Raw this Monday. It was one of his better efforts of the last few months. His selling was good and mounted a pretty decent comeback all things considered but this match will definitely be outshone by the time the year is over. Edge Kane from Smackdown this week I don't want to spoil anything but that's a possible contender to be the worst match of the year.

I'll mention Devitt vs Kota Ibushi @ NJPW's WrestleKingdom V as at least 3.5 stars.

    + 1

Actually, the entire program between Edge and Kane is ridonkulously awful and unintentionally funny.

Id agree with the 3.5 for this. Decent, if unspectacular outing.

You can watch the Devitt/Ibushi match here :

    http://www.megavideo.com/?d=TZJQCSS2

(Match starts at ~6:51 into the video, I included the before and after the match parts too.) My youtube account has had two flags already so I don't want to upload it to youtube, if it gets pulled my account will be closed :(

For me, its Kane v Edge Falls count anywhere.

I'd say so far it's Ziggler V Edge at the Rumble. Ziggler looked great & Edge put him over well.

Also I know it's not 2011, but I still say Sheamus V Jomo at TLC... :D

Price Devitt & Ryusuke Taguchi Vs Kenny Omega & Kota Ibushi. NJPW junior tag titles 23/01/01

Absolutely stunning match this. The pace is relentless. All 4 are stars. SDome of the innovation is breath taking.

A solid 4 stars for this one.

Cannot find a youtube link for it, but it might be on some social network site.

I found myself watching superstars this week. (Not entirely sure why and was on my laptop so didnt really care much.)

    Pretty glad i did though.

One of the best divas match that i seen in a while was featured.
    Its a definite contender!

8 minutes long and they dont give up much at all!

Ill seaerch for a link/youtube at some point but wanna put forward Daniel Bryan vs the Miz from yesterdays Raw.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,013 ✭✭✭✭jaykhunter

It was a great 8 minutes of another Danielson clinic but really for this MOTY thread, matches should be at a minimum of 10 minutes.

Just got done watching this now and I echo your thoughts on it. Great match and innovation is the right word to single out as they did moves I've never seen before. The double team moves were amazing. I've seen Devitt, Ibushi and Omega before, but I don't think I've seen Taguchi. I liked what I saw from him too. I thought it was great when he...
did the three Amigos and called it that
    .

you can have good matches shorter than 10mins, e.g. angle and mystero at summerslam 2002 was 9mins and that was terrific stuff from bell to bell

i just watched that bryan/miz match tonight, good match, will be one of the best tv matches of the year in wwe when all is said and done, probably not in the running for moty though

definitely, that's what I mean. Like it'd be perfect for a "great matches this year" thread but most TV matches due to time constraints will automatically be ousted as a serious MOTY contender

Angle/Jarrett from Against All Odds - I'd put it at about ***3/4.

The NJPW tag match is brilliant. That is all.

It was a decent outing but it ticked a few boxes for me which are major downers- ref bumps and interference. So that would push it back to a 3 at best for me.

Another decent run out for Devitt here. My first time seeing Mistico as well. Impressed

    3.5*

Would I re watch - Prob not.

Raw Elimination Chamber (***3/4) and Smackdown Elimination Chamber (****1/2)

I really enjoyed Miz vs Bryan on RAW there a few weeks ago.

Not sure if it qualifies as MOTY, but definitely a great great TV match.

More of that please WWE :)

I mentioned it at the time, never searched out a link though cos I guess I agree with what others said i.e that its prob too short to be a contender for a year long thing, but it was the most into a match i got in a good while if im honest

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,640 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

I heard people raving about this match and having watched it I can see why.

Kaz Hayashi vs Minoru, AJPW, Jan 2nd, 2011

Tells a great story with some jaw-dropping moments and great drama throughout. Perhaps went a minute too long at the end but still a terrific match. I'd say ****1/2 stars.

This and the SD Elimination Chamber are probably my favourites of the year so far. Recommended.

Delighted to see so much Puro in this thread this year. I am so far behind.

ROH 9th Anniversary show: Briscoes Vs Haas & Benjamin. As to be expected really, an absolute humdinger of a match. I would guess this is the first of a series because you could tell they were almost holding back somewhat.

I would give this a solid 4, and would almost certainly watch it again.

Maybe I need to watch it again, but that match did very little for me.

I thought Christian V Alberto Del Rio's cage match from last week's Smackdown was very good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 89,020 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

    From Wrestlemania 27

    Undertaker V HHH

    Cody Rhodes V Rey Mysterio

    CM Punk V Randy Orton

Just like I've never agreed with giving star ratings to films, I've never agreed with giving star ratings to wrestling matches. In my opinion the best matches just like films are the ones that connect with you on an emotional level, and I don't believe you can break down complex emotions into numbers.

On a more relevant note I've got a left field choice for a match that I think should be considered one of the best of 2011 and that is the world title match between Colt Cabana and Adam Pearce from NWA: Hollywood. This feud had been building for the better part of a year and had featured Pearce constantly getting the upper hand using dirty tactics. What really sold this feud however was Cabana's highly sympathetic underdog role and Pearce's excellent mic skills. The big blow-off to the story happened a couple of months ago at NWA's TV taping that was broadcast last week.

Here's the episode that contains the match. I highly recommend a watch if for no other reason than to show you that there's great wrestling happening outside the more well known of places.

From the ROH WM Weekend shows: Briscoes/Cole and O'Reilly, KOW/WGTT, Richards/Strong, Edwards/Daniels, KOW/Cole and O'Reilly, Briscoes/ANX and WGTT/American Wolves are all most definitely worth seeing. Even the womens matches are probably the two best womens matches you'll see all year.

Punk v Orton was the best match at Mania. For my wife, who hasn't watched wrestling in literally YEARS, to get really into it, you know it's a good match. HHH v Taker was over rated. Far too long, and that was just the entrances.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,296 ✭✭✭✭gimmick

Off work sick today so watching a few bits and pieces. I would imagine the ROH show "Worlds Greatest" will be overlooked by a lot. However, there are 2 absolute stunners on this. I wish I could find a youtube for them, but alas, nay

Kenny King Vs Eddie Edwards ****
Kings Of Wrestling & Roderick Strong Vs Wrestlings Greatest Tag Team & Davey Richards ****1/2

The latter especially really had everything. Make sure you see this one.

Good little TV match. mouth watering glimpse of what two uch world class performweers could do if given the proper time. Mistico is settling down, he's such a smooth an graceful athelete to watch. There was one roll up in mid air he hit mid-match that was sumptuous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,391 ✭✭✭D2D

Christian vs Orton from Over the Limit - 3.5*s - 4*s

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,301 ✭✭✭✭gerrybbadd

It's been done 100 times before, but I think Ziggler and Kofi had a fantastic match there on Raw last night. Nice to see Dolph get the clean win too..:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,206 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

    Christian v Del Rio

    Extreme Rules

Quality match with an awesome conclusion which even made a bitter old smark mark out harder than a teenage girl at a Justin Bieber gig. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,296 ✭✭✭✭gimmick

Despite Davey Richards epic botch in this match, his effort with Christopher Daniels in ROH Manhatten Madness 4 is a stunner. Really shows both men in the best light you can possibly see.

    I would say 4.5*.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,301 ✭✭✭✭gerrybbadd

Orton Vs Sheamus' no dq match on Smackdown was a very enjoyable match!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,888 ✭✭✭Charisteas

El Generico Vs The 1-2-3 Kid from Chikara King of Trios (17.04.11) is well worth a watch. I have the full PPV but I have only watched this match so far, but will report back if the other matches are good too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,296 ✭✭✭✭gimmick

DGUSA United We Stand (aired 01/03/2011)

    Akira Tozawa Vs BB Hulk.

Tozawa looks like the bastard brother of KENTA and Yokosuka and he performs very much like both. This was an incredible to and fro match. They ebat the living snot out of each other for a good 20 minutes and you literally cannot call who the winner will be at any stage.

    ****

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,296 ✭✭✭✭gimmick

Im giving the following 3 from Honor Takes Centre Stage 1 - 4 stars

Davey Richards Vs Roderick Strong - only to be expected really. These 2 have an amazing chemistry together and it really showed here.

Kings Of Wrestling Vs Haas & Benjamin - again no surprises. 4 seasoned vets pulling it all out. Ran around the right length of time as well.

Eddie Edwards Vs Christopher Daniels - I was never a fan of Daniels, but the last 2 matches of his I have seen, against Daniels and Strong respectively, have been excellent. Edwards is a somewhat unknown quantity to me still, but from what I have seen has been solid. Good story in this match as well. The big downer here was the ending as it seemed a bit contrived. On 2nd thoughts I will give this 3.75*

    Good show overall as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭Machismo Fan

Styles vs. Bully Ray at Slammiversary was fantastic, great story, jaw dropping highspots and a career performance by Bully Ray (who for my money is the best heel in wrestling and has been the most pleasant surprise this year). ****
