    Knew about this, read and studied it.
    If your interested, try and get a copy of a non-fiction book (once actually banned in Ireland) called "Orders for the captain" written by Captain James Kelly and it concerns matters, arms and Haughty around this time. I read the book myself many years ago.
    As to the man himself, here is a few links:
    * http://www.independent.ie/unsorted/migration/captain-james-kelly-492992.html
    * http://www.irishgraves.com/captain_james_kelly.htm
    * http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/northern_ireland/3075465.stm

    Its interesting reading and it helps to put the period into further perspective and how things came so close to what could have been profound actions.

    Yeah I don't know what would have happened if the south invaded the north tbh. I mean, let's assume they did. Would the IRA have aided the PDF, and if so would that have effected things as well? just a thought really.

    But sure it's proberly for the best nothing did happen, I mean imagine what could have happened

    The southern forces would have gotten taken apart.
    A stand up and fight army against the Brits? When the Brits gave even less of a xxxx than they do now? Carnage

    Realistically, invading the north was olnly ever a pipe dream, even Collins new it wasn't faesableand would only end up weakening the nationallist position through defeat.

    In military terms an invasion of the North would have presented analogous problems to the US in Iraq today ie... a partial hostile population backed by a hostile neighbouring power...except we wouldn't have had the capability of the US and thus would have been driven off easily.

    Redundant debate IMO

    What's the reason for being reasonable?

    Is that an unreasonable question?

    They just wouldnt stand a chance, The British prime minster Would be dancing around the corridors Feeling all superior, And saying to the other Minsters "Hmmm should i attack now, Nah left them stay there for another 5 mins they might get cold then And get tired" Then he will say Attack! Then all you will see is around 40 RAF Fighter jets going around the area, And around 500 soilders, Then the RAF Will start firing at them. and some of them Retreat But get shot by soliders on the ground, Then The Irish commander reports to King. Cowen III "There all dead, They got slaughtered literally" Cowen says "Ahh sure we can use them to make some nice Beef for my dinner tonight" :D

    There was never an invasion plan drawn up, the DF were asked to put together a military option of what could be done if the North went into meltdown.

    The plan was never to invade the North, merely open up a corridor to pull Catholics out and to create an international incident using border raids and seizing Newry while Catholics were pulled back to the Republic.

    I'm struggling to figure out how you've managed to include Cowen in your story when Jack Lynch was Taoiseach at the time.

    Ireland should have invaded the North and interned all the Loyalists in concentration camps and subsequently exterminated them all in gas chambers.

    Mu ha ha ha ha!!

    I'm not sure capture would have been necessary.:D AFAIK, there were plenty of back roads that could have been put back in use fairly easily.

    I remember a number of occasions, when visiting relatives, where my parents complained that "the old road was quicker, before they closed it".

    I also remember having one of said roads pointed out to me.
    The only security I could see was two soldiers, and a jeep......
    Then again, I was pretty young at the time!

    South Ireland???

    Cork? Waterford, Kerry? Invading the North, no wonder we'd lose. :rolleyes:

    Surely you mean the Republic of Ireland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,080 ✭✭✭kenco

    As posted earlier in the plan was not a full invasion but to open up paths for fleeing Nationalists.

    There are some very good books out there on this matter. The documentary wasnt bad but was very much made for TV and could not cover all the ground. The end result in the doc was the most likely one however, i.e. UK military attacks on any forces invading on a temp basis or not.

    The gamble for the Irish government would have been to play the refugee card and hope the US got involved or the UK backed down (both of which were very unlikely to happen)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭Poccington

    The documentary was a sham.

    The plan itself is AFAIK available in the Public Records Office.

    Thats not how you invade somewhere. You just put some coats near the border and move them north inch by inch when the brits aren't looking. Before you know it we have the causeway, bord fáilte are carving a gift shop into it and charging 20 quid in the car park

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,614 ✭✭✭The Sparrow

    I remember watching this at the time it was broadcast on RTE. It was a terrible documentary. A complete waste of time.

    A good idea for a doc but executed horribly. Camera all over the gaff and extreme closeups of Keelinn Shanley for no bloody reason. And nobody wants that.

    Shame because it was an interesting idea but they made it almost unwatchable.
