does any one have any views on the differences between doing squats with dumbbells vs doing them with a barbell, i prefer dumbbells personally, are they as effective with dumbbells i wonder???

No, because grip strength becomes the limiting factor.

agreed - there will come a point where you just cant increase the load enough.

Try split squats, pistols, lunges and step ups, single leg deadlifts with the dumbbells instead.

e.g. split squats and loaded press ups

or single leg deadlifts - initially shown with barbell and at the end shown with a kettlebell (just just as heavy a dumbbell you can handle)

    Hope that helps

The physical size of the plates was the limiting factor for me -before grip.

I was using adjustable ones with 10kg plates which knock against your body & knees, you might get a bit longer out of non-adjustable ones.

    It depends on your goals.

If you have Dumbells at the right weight for what your lifting then use them. Eventually you may need to use the bar, but that of course depends how strong you get.

I started doing squats with dumbells and then started to use exercise like the ones transform has posted. That is because it suited my goals of trying to lose weight rather than bulk up (I say it suited as It was working for me).
