    Does anybody know?

ive read some of the other threads on this forum and it seems that most modems need to be 'fixed' before using them-i want one that can be used by just connecting it-does anyone using mobile broadband have a provider that works with ubuntu 10.10?

These are a list of the mobile broadband modems that are known to work:

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NetworkManager/Hardware/3G#Mobile%20Broadband%20cards

It's likely you would be getting a Huawei E*** model, most of them work out of the box, but I notice the one for three.ie (the E620) needs a little tweaking to get it to work with the latest version of Ubuntu.

3 are doing a deal for prepay modems at the minute. Their prepay is extremely expensive but you could try it to see if it works? You could try unlock it here and use it with any of the Irish providers.

I can confirm Meteor Broadband to Go works. I am on boards now with a Ubuntu 10.10 LiveCD and a Meteor Huawei E180. Set up is very easy altogether. You right-click on Network Connection>Edit Connections. A window opens with 5 tabs. The 3rd tab is Mobile Broadband. Click Add connection and a wizard opens. It asks your country and based on that selection, offers a list of providers (has all the Irish ones). It asks what plan you are on and automatically fills the APN. It is extremely easy altogether, even easier than on windows.

I find the Huawei E180 very quick to use, basically just select your country and SIM provider in Ubuntu or Mint.

Never had a problem with Huawei sticks in general, have used the following in Ubuntu..

    Huawei E169 (3 Network)
Huawei E180 (Meteor - Both using the default Meteor firmware and the generic Huawei firmware)

Currently using an E585 and an E5830. No issues with both, obviously, since they are managed through a web interface on a wifi connection.

Easier to use these under Linux I find, generally.

What do you mean by this? Can you install the meteor app fully on linux? The only problem I had with my method was the inability to check balance.

What I mean is, whatever way the E180 is supplied, it will work normally under Ubuntu. You work through the Ubuntu supplied interface. Nothing is installed from the stick.

You couldn't check the balance though, could you?

    No.

I Googled back when I first got the E180 and stumbled across someone who detailed sending commands to the stick, including sending SMS, but it was all done in a terminal, without any user interface.. not quick or easy.

You can see your balance on their website anyway. Not a showstopper.
