you might get some heat for opening up one thread in specific , but its Christams,

it had a good day to day and seem to be much more in control so id say chances are high 80+

best to keep an eye on departures to see if they are on top of their schedule, think long haul is prioritised too,

I'm flying from Dublin today and all looks well, the website says they expect everything to run as normal today so I wouldn't worry.

    Looking good at the moment.
    04.45: Dublin Airport Fully Operational

Dublin Airport is fully operational this morning Thursday, 23rd December, 2010. There were a number of snow showers overnight however our snow and ice crews have worked throughout the night to ensure the runway, taxiway and apron areas are available for flight operations this morning while temperatures dropped to -6 degrees. Our snow and ice crews are on standby should weather conditions deteriorate further.

Dublin Airport website is running very slow.

Don't think it's any harm to have this thread open - there are so many people trying to get home for Christmas it would be good for people to update with any info they might have.

I'm supposed to be collecting my girlfriend tonight around 9pm but I can't see that happening. According to Aer Lingus the flight is still as scheduled but with the backlog from this morning plus the further falls now (well there is a big flurry on the Southside at the moment) it's not looking good.

That's actually a story about this morning's closure. Still, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it did close again, it's still coming down strong in D6.

I've been pretty tense the last few days worrying about if I'm going to get home or not, I'm flying out of Heathrow tomorrow evening, things at Heathrow are getting back to normal, but I didn't realise I now have to worry about the weather in Dublin.
I hope the weather eases up later today and tomorrow.

"16.00: Dublin Airport Resumes Flight OperationsDecember 23 2010Flight operations resumed at Dublin Airport just after 13.00, Thursday 23rd December, 2010.There are delays to the flight schedule as a result and passengers are advised to contact their airline or airline's website BEFORE coming to the airport. Our snow and ice crew are on standby should weather conditions deteriorate further. You can follow us on http://twitter.com/dublinairport 16.00: Thursday 23rd December, 2010"

An optmistic update by all counts. Looks like serious delays but to date only Aer Arann flights have been cancelled....

Planes have landed and taken off in the past 10 minutes, best source for flight info is directly with your chosen airline, it took the airport websites a good hour to to catch up with flight info I was monitoring last night so worth checking the status there too.

She will most likely arrive but there will undoubtedly be considerable delays.

I believe Aer Lingus have cancelled all outgoing flights for the rest of the day and are trying to get as many inbound planes into Ireland as they can.

All outbound Aerlingus flights cancelled for the day since 16:00

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,724 ✭✭✭kennyb3

Why cancel only outbound flights? what i mean is alot of the planes have to go outbound to come back inbound?

For example my brother is stuck in vienna, as the flight going out is cancelled he is now screwed.

Is this not a company who claim to be the national airline and who promised to get as many people home as possible? why not fly as many planes in and out while the airport is open. Even if there were delays at least people would get home even if it is the middle of the night.

They are the only airline doing this and as a frequent aer lingus flyer i find it absurd and a big let down

They have cancelled a hell of a lot inbound as well. Its why I will never travel with Aer Lingus anymore.

Aer Lingus is really a joke, their plots and steward/hostess are all the same, rude impolite and selfish. They only think about themselves , their salary and their strikes. They doesn't care at all about passengers. If you saw the amount of people crying this morning because the flight from 7am didn't go at all and 12pm these passengers were still there. No information from Aer lingus. The DAA is also a big joke, they should provide more news and assistance to passengers but they donesn't. The country is a big joke compared to other European countries.

The plane due to go to Vienna from Dublin is probably in Cork or Shannon. It could still get to Vienna empty. The planes will be using this Dublin cancellation period to reposition themselves i assume.

Me selfish i don't think so and for your info I don't travel with Aer Lingus unfortunately. You might be boarding the plane but will probably get out in 20 mins.

Not boarding, but the people that work on the planes have lives too, so maybe you should be more grateful.

Glad you dont travel with EI - they are probably better off without ya :P

Aer Lingus cancelled my son's flight from Birmingham due to leave at 20.15. Amazingly the Ryanair flight that was scheduled for 19.00 approx is going ahead.:mad::mad:
Luckily my son has a ferry ticket and it trying to make his way to Holyhead as we speak. Fingers crossed, I just want him home.

No good blaming Aer Lingus. all the airlines are cancelling flights, through necessity, not because they want to. There were a lot of aircraft in the air due to land at Dublin between 9:40 and 13:00, and even more that ended up having to wait where they were until they could be certain of getting back into Dublin, or to be pedantic, as certain as they could be of getting into either Dublin or an acceptable alternative that could take them, bearing in mind that today is one of the busiest of the year, so landing slots and gate availability at most other airports will be limited, as they too have a full schedule. If a car has to park up because it can't get to a specific place, that's not a massive problem, it's not so easy to park an aircraft if it's getting short of fuel or there's nowhere to put it after it lands.

Once they've diverted, they then have to decide if it's better to sit at the diversion with passengers on board still, and hope to get to Dublin later, or offload everyone, and send them by whatever means is available to Dublin, while they then wait for things to improve at Dublin so they can get the aircraft back here to carry on as soon as possible after arrival. That depends on slots, gates and the like at Dublin, and also on the crew having sufficient time still available in their day to do the flight, which is not always certain, there are a lot of restrictions on crew duty time for good reasons. There are only so many fuel trucks and drivers, extra aircraft needing fuel out of schedule just have to wait, and most handling agents don't have spare staff on days like today, so that's more delays.

The airlines then have to reorganise the slots, gates and everything else at the destinations, some of which have time restrictions on their opening hours, and make sure that they will get back to Dublin without further disruption,

The real issue that needs to be addressed is why the DAA needed 4 hours to clear a relatively minor snowfall. Part of the problem will be insufficient equipment, possibly a shortage of available and trained crew, as most of their snow clearers were either on duty or operational overnight, and probably a few other factors as well. DAA have proved themselves to be just about adequate at running Ireland's largest pub, but their skills at designing, planning and operating the largest airport in the country are at times less than stellar.

Ryanair and Aer Arran have also cancelled flights, and all the airlines will be working late tonight to try and get as many people to their intended destinations as possible.

And before I get shouted at, I don't work for Aer Lingus, or any other airline, but I do have professional flying qualifications, and have worked at Dublin airport in the past, so I do know quite a bit about what goes on there.

    Steve

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Some people dont see the safety aspect to the airport closure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,519 ✭✭✭irish1967

Exactly... if a plane skids off the runway on take off or landing the DAA would be critised for not closing. I know which i would prefer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,006 ✭✭✭✭The Muppet

I live 3 miles from the airport and I don't know how they got any flights out today at all, The roads are armageddon around here and its snowed on and off all day and its snowing heavily now.

Safety has to be the priority, those complaining now would have a lot more to complain about if something dreadful happened.

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators Posts: 6,522 Mod ✭✭✭✭Irish Steve

Closing agian now for " an hour", but if the present snow doesn't ease, it could be a lot longer, the problem is a line of continuous showers coming ashore off the Irish Sea, the "Isle of Man" streamer, and no sign of it easing. I was within a mile of the airport earlier and there was nothing at all coming down.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Good luck to all flying over the next couple of days. Someone on the ATC just said the airport will be closed for another four hours.

My girlfriend's flight from Edinburgh - Dublin tonight has just been cancelled too, sh1tty times.:(
