WW2 film quiz thread

I saw a thread like this on another history forum and thought it was a good idea.

    Here are the rules -

    a) If you think you know the film then reply with what movie you think it is.

    b) once confirmed that your guess was correct (and you were the first to answer) then you then post a reply which includes a screenshot and the quiz proceeds.

    c) If you can't produce a screenshot then pass it on to the next person

    d) Also - nothing too ridiculously abstract - if any prove to be too hard it can be skipped after a few days.

I will throw in two to get things started - one very easy and 1 not quite as easy but not really that difficult. You need to guess both.

PS VLC free media player allows you to take screenshots mid movie.

    Movie A (easy one)

    Movie B

A - I'll guess "Valkyrie" which I haven't even seen (It's not Cross of Iron or Enemy at the Gates, there are relatively few eastern front films in colour, the titles makes it look 1980s or 1990s)

    and

B - Black Book (it looks like a european made film)

Go on give us a clue...

You are right on Valkyrie. The 2nd one is european made too - it's the Polish film 'Katyn'. Ok you win so your go !

unsure of the first but looks like a 60/70s "all germans speak english" hollywood ww2 movie.
cant think of the name, flight of the eagles or eagle somthing?
its about an undercover operation to destry a german costal gun. and theres an elevator to set of the bomb.

2nd photo is of The Pianist.

I think movie a) is Where Eagles Dare ? If it is and if Mousey got the Pianist right it's his turn !

Mousey, you are nearly there on the first one. It's "Where Eagles Dare" set in the Alps, not to be confused with "The Guns Of Navarone" set in the med :D

You are correct with "The Pianist" so its your turn...

A is Das Untergang - Downfall
    B is . . . . . dammit - no idea !

I have seen B before - I think someone once posted that pic on the militaria forum as an original photo ? Can't remember the name of the film though. Any clues to B ?

A - "Downfall" It's the very end of that film when Berlin has fallen and she and the Volkssturm kid make their escape slowly through russian columns...

B - Is it "Die Brücke" - The Bridge?

    A - the Longest Day (B/W version)

    B - Stalingrad

Cross of Iron is great, the nitty gritty of ground level retreat told from a German point of view. A bit dated but still exiting, some memorable platoon characters and scenes are portrayed in the film...

That looks like 'Cross of Iron' (Asylum scene) & maybe 'Saints and Soldiers' ?

Reckon it's Tomohawk's go though as he won the last one !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,142 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

Sorry didnt know it was winner stays on :o
Anyway yeah Saints&Soldiers is right for the second one. The first one isn't Cross of Iron. I'll give you a clue though, the director is in that screenshot doing a cameo.

Doh - well that's me screwed ! What year was it made and which one is the director ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,273 ✭✭✭Morlar

Ah is it The Big Red one ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,142 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

Not the Big Red One. The director is the guy wearing the glasses. If I give you the year it'll be too obvious ;)

    Triumph of the spirit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,142 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

Nope, the film was made in the 70's. Just picture the director with grey hair and you should get it ;)

Well going with the beard style and glasses I'd say a young Richard Attenborough making the movie bridge too far, but I doubt it.

Correct! Its a scene from near the start of the film just after they land. They discover that their pre-landing bombing broke down the gates of a local insane asylum. Its supposed to be an ominous sign of things to come as the crazy people come out of the woods laughing at them.
