    Hi,
Today my satellite was installed. I didn't get much chance to talk to the installer from Satellite Broadband Ireland but from what I could understand the download/upload limits are different to those with the 3 dongle.

Can anyone give me the details, or point me in the right direction to find them please? I've tried both websites but I'm none the wiser.

Sorry, no it's not sat just 3G with 12 month contract. But i think the limit for the sat is 15g at least.

For satellite download it's good and is it constantly around that, did it ever did 2mb or under?

    Poor ping :(

Ping on Satellite is never under 700ms, its 23,000 miles away. A radio wave can't be made go any faster

The NBS contract is being violated by this service. It's up to Three to negotiate the CORRECT Contracted Cap. Three are being paid for this.

    Anything more restrictive than
    Monthly 11 GB (10 down / 1 up)
    is fraud by Three.

The NBS contract is NOT with SBI or Tooway, but between Three and the Government. Three have signed a contract to deliver minimum service that they are not delivering.

They also excuse the 6 Gigabyte monthly limit on the fact that NBS satellite users get "unlimited" usage from 11pm - 7am. This would probably mean that you are allowed the remaining 4 Gigabytes overnight, but believe me, I have put this to the test and there is more than 4 Gigabytes available, and rightly so.
So can you rip the piss out of the system by downloading loads overnight?

Best get that "unlimited at night" in writing from Three before you chance it.

This piss poor limitation means that the satellite option is entirely useless for business users save for those who only use it for email.

    11pm - 7am.
Useless for 90% of people. Hence why it's allowed.

Schedule your computer to download the torrents and those dirty videos over night! :P

That's less than 15% of users. Really.

On the speed of that satellite broadband, it's not like you would download a HD film at 6:55pm in time for 9:20 pm along with pizza.

(By HD, I mean WebHD, not bluray, Bluray would probably take two entire nights on a DSL line, But good WebHD, iTunes HD style)

Nobodies going to share a torrent with You if You're not uploading as You download, with the poor speeds You get on Satellite torrents just won't work well, anytime

The 2 Ka Band satellites are now in their orbital position and are undergoing checks prior to commercial service in the late spring. The largest of the pair , Ka Sat , will reserve 10% of its overall capacity in Ireland ( estimates Watty who should know) just for RTÉ to beam d'telly down upon us.

    According to Eutelsat yesterday:
"We expect to bring the satellite into commercial service in May after the tests and validation of the spacecraft with the on-ground network," said Vanessa O'Connor, a Eutelsat spokesperson.

Hylas will come into service around the same time, perhaps sooner. There will be no excuse for throttling on an hourly or daily basis after then.

Maybe not for new users. But at €50 to €100 a pop costs are they going to re-align existing customers dishes (assuming they have HB6 Ka Tooway) from 13E to 9E?

Also the non-Tooway NBS users would need new dish, new ODU (BUC+LNB) and new Modem for Hylas1 (Hughes VSAT) or Ka-Sat (Tooway VSAT).

Anyway. it's Three's problem. They ought to fix ALL their NBS sat customers. Most are not getting the NBS stipulated package. What SBI, Digiweb, Avanti, Hughes or Tooway sell retail is irrelevant. I KNOW that eircom had negotiated a Sat package Wholesale that met the NBS limits. That's why they were much more expensive than Three who went in to Tender with Fantasy VSAT pricing from Avanti for a service that still does not exist.

It makes a mockery of a Tender process if a major component is underpriced and then delivered sub-par because the winning party can't afford the proper wholesale package!

Lucky you! I've never got above 1.something-not-very-much at best. Any tips on how to achieve 3.6 Mb down?

According to that link each spot beam is limited to
    900Mb/s
They expect this to boost Twoway speeds to
    10Mb/s

How many users, even with a 50:1 contention would it take to use all that 900Mb/s? 4,500?

Surely that cannot be right? I must be missing something.
There are 82 spot beams in total ......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,445 ✭✭✭✭watty

There is 450Mbps download in clear sky as the 900MBps counts both directions.

    50MBps is needed for RTE.

You get less capacity if it's damp, drizzle, rain. So maybe 250Mbps - 50Mbps = 200Mbps.

One UPC cable can have 2,000Mbps just for one street.
One Fixed Wireless Mast can have 540Mbps.
One Mobile mast serves 60Mbps peak, or about 12Mbps average, so only about 20 Mobile masts.

Hylas1 and Ka-Sat are a big improvement on previous Irish Satellite, but compared to terrestrial it's rubbish. One FTTC cabnet serving ONE street can have 200,000Mbps download capacity.

Even at 900Mbps (which is a lie, that't not available for download on one spot), assuming 10Mbps and 50:1 contention is
    50 x 900 / 10 = 4,500 users only.
1% of housholds is 16,000 users
10% of households is 160,000 users.

But in reality given Irish weather and true capacity, 50:1 is more like 1,100 users.
    50:1 is pretty terrible contention.

    Satellite is great for
    • Broadcast (TV, Push VOD via HDD cache, HD Cinema)
    • Emergency Communications
    • Outside Broadcast links
    • Emergency Internet access

It's rubbish & expensive solution for Internet and not a Broadband Solution.

Thanks Watty ..... seems I was not missing anything as your figures confirm.

Taking a more reasonable 20:1 contention it would service 1,800 customers in good weather at 10Mb/s connection.

The whole idea seems pointless when weather is added into the mix ..... giving somewhat less than 900 customers at 10Mb/s with 20:1 contention ratio.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,445 ✭✭✭✭watty

The business plan of the Satellite owners assume more like 250:1 to 500:1 contention eventually.

Contention on existing satellite services is extremely high, hence hourly, daily, weekly and monthly caps to reduce congestion.

Also why Cap is very very low compared to typical maximums:
    Imagine WiMax and 3G/HSPA 30Gbyte
    Fixed Metro Wireless 60Gbyte
    Cable and DSL 250GByte
    Fibre Over 1000Gbyte, perhaps more.

is it true iv look up 3 unlimeted download at night 11pm to 7 am and does it really work im trying to find da truth thanks

hi i phoned to complain about the slow speed through the day and was told that i had exceeded the limit 10gb down and 1gb up.this had been exceeded by downloading overnight windows updates due to a crashed hdd
IMPORTANT the overnight useage is used in calculating your overall useage,if you download at night and use all you supposed unlimited allowance
once you exceed the 10 gb down and 1gb up at night your daytime useage will be severly throttled back to a non existant service.
beware unlimited overnight useage is not unlimited.

Three providing a crap, substandard and borderline illegal service? Surely never

A 10GB limit on anything in this day and age is robbery.

And the worst thing is, some would still be on Dial-Up if it wasn't for this! :pac:
